Engaging Engagement Pictures

September 28th, 2007 @ 12:41 pm by Mrs. Radish

Thinking of a good location for our engagement pictures was 100 times more difficult than I anticipated. Our photographer was not from the area so we had to come up with something on our own. We ended up in a cemetery (kind of a long story) because we really wanted to avoid the typical beach/garden/landmark type of thing. Now, there is nothing wrong with that kind of thing, but we were looking for something a little different.

Recently, I noticed these really cool carnival engagement pictures that our wedding photographer, Tim Forbes, posted on his blog. I think it is such a cute idea and the couple looks like they had a great time. I’ve always loved carnivals and amusement parks, and all of the colors and the glowing lights are beautiful and strangely romantic. I wish I had thought to do something like this! Though I must say that I do love the way our surprisingly un-morbid cemetery pictures came out :)

Is anyone else looking for/or did you have a less traditional engagement session? Has anyone had their engagement pictures done at a carnival? Or some other interesting location?

Share your ideas!

Ours was less than traditional by default. We had planned on a short two-hour park-setting next to a river. My FH’s truck broke down right as we got off the highway; I drove around in my car looking for jumper cables and gas (AAA took forever to show up).

So, we called the photog and he pulled up just as the police and AAA were leaving. Ended up taking pics against a mossy brick wall and the porch of a law firm (old victorian home repurposed) - all one block from the highway!

We honest-to-pete had the groom’s aunt take a snapshot of us in her back yard, using my camera. Total cost: $0. Plus that whole “look relaxed” thing was all taken care of.

We had a graffiti wall/cobblestone street in the meatpacking district. Really urban gritty part of that area (since it’s quite glam now). We were all dressed up for our engagement party brunch we were having that afternoon. So we had this graffiti wall behind us in our fancy dress.

We did our engagement pics twice. The first time was in a random park in my hometown (Fort Wayne, IN - a far cry from our current home of Miami) with a point&shoot camera propped on top of a coffee cup.

The second time was in the Everglades with a duo of recent art school graduates.

we originally planned to take our e-photos at a small carnival but realized it was more for little kids. we ended up taking them at the central park zoo instead and they turned out great. we have shots with sea lions, polar bears, and penguins, oh my!

We skipped engagement pictures entirely. Our photo was taken (with our camera) by the staff at the place where we got engaged, and you couldn’t have bottled happier faces than we had at that moment! Used those photos for the newspaper announcement and wedding website, no problem.

We wanted to do the opposite of traditional for our photos, especially since we come from a small town, with a very traditional small town newspaper, with EXTREMELY traditional engagement photos. Here’s a link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/danmisener/1333866786/

We are from PA, but often visit Cape May. We had our photog take our pics there. Very much worth it! Take a look!

Amy you’re pictures are awesome! Such a great idea, my grandparent’s have a house there, too. Wish we weren’t so far away because it would mean so much to have engagement pictures from a place that I spent my childhood summers.
