Melting of the Caramels Part 2

September 29th, 2007 @ 2:51 pm by Mrs. Caramel

Part 1

We ended up having a great time at Hearst Castle and started heading back to Malibu towards our favorite spot on a hill. This peculiar sandy hill, just off the Pacific Coast Highway in the middle of nowhere, was discovered by Mr. Caramel when he went on one of his drives to think. It doesn’t even look like it’s for the public, but you can veer your car off the road and park in a safe distance away from oncoming traffic.  It’s very difficult to make your way to the top because your feet sink into the sand, so Mr. Caramel and I have never made it because it’s too tiring.

However, that weekend Mr. Caramel insisted that we make it to the very top since we had never done it. After tons of huffing and puffing, we made it to the top to see the gorgeous view of the beach. It was quiet, and very serene. I always jokingly called this spot Pondering Places, because we’d go there to think and talk about God and life. It’s always easier to talk about those things when you’re surrounded by nature.

So Mr. Caramel started asking questions about our relationship such as “what are some of your hopes for the future,” “what were some surprises in our relationship,” “what kind of couple would you like to be in the future?” I started to feel it coming… but I had no idea how this was going to end! Mr. Caramel asked if he could sing me a song and pulled out his guitar (that should have been the big hint right??) He sang me a significant song of ours, called “Your Love is Better Than Wine” that is based off the Songs of Solomons. Then he started to play another song… that he wrote, called “The Reasons I do.”

We had never said “I love you” to each other yet, knowing that we wanted to say it only when we were engaged/married. I knew it was coming… when he ended the song with “(The reasons why I do) love you.”

Then he asked me to stand (since I was sitting) and he pulled out this huge ring box and told me all these sweet things that I can’t remember, and asked me to marry him. And my first words were — “are you joking?!” (What a sweetheart I am, huh?) And he of course said, he was indeed serious and I finally said “yes!”

We were hugging and I’m crying and trying to soak it in. We really wanted to take a picture of this raw moment but no one was in sight… then a car pulled up! Out came 2 guys, running up the hill. We were wondering what they were doing, because we’d NEVER seen anyone else on this hill! As they ran past us, we asked them to take a picture of us and they dif — we jokingly said that they were random angels sent to the hill only to take our picture.

We got back into the car and called all our friends and family to tell them the good news while driving to dinner. We had a long romantic dinner and excitedly talked about wedding details. He told me how he had met with my entire family in December to ask if they would bless our marriage. I loved how all my best friends and family knew this entire time but I never knew about it!

After dinner, we headed back to Mr. Caramel’s apartment, when I was SURPRISED by all our friends waiting for us in the dark! I couldn’t believe that they accepted all my phone calls in the car, acting shocked and surprised but all the while waiting for us to come back from dinner at Mr. Caramel’s apartment!

So there was the story…. immediately that night I blogged “I’M ENGAGED!” to the world and the whole wedding planning began.

Congrats! I loved your story. My husband and I didn’t say I Love You until he proposed too. Didn’t it feel like forever! I bet it was on the tip of your tongue for so long. We dated for 3 and a half years before he popped the question…worth the wait! Happy wedding planning and a blessed marriage to come!
