Bespoke Suits

October 1st, 2007 @ 1:13 pm by Mrs. Peony

When my mother and father were married, both families were so poor that they had to make a lot of sacrifices. So when my maternal grandfather, an accomplished tailor, used his savings to buy the best fabric available to present my father with three bespoke suits as a wedding present, it was one the best wedding presents they received. My father still has them to this day.

Both my father and mother were so touched by this gesture that when I got engaged, they told me that they wanted to continue this tradition with custom tailored suits made for Mr. Peony as their wedding gift to him. My mother promptly found a tailor based on their reputation in the Korean-American community. A couple of months ago, Mr. Peony, my mother and I visited their shop in Ridgefield, NJ. Silly Mr. Peony was overwhelmed - he thought that a bespoke suit was only based on your measurements! He had no idea that you could choose the fabric, the fit, lapel size and style, pockets, buttons, vents….basically everything!

We decided on a tuxedo for the wedding, a black formal suit, and a dark brown pinstriped casual suit. A week later, Mr Peony went in for the first fitting. Since this was just a mock-up of what the suit would look like, we weren’t too impressed.

Last week, a full 6 weeks later, we received a call that the suits were ready. Yesterday we went in to have a look. Holy crap!

He looked amazing! Mr Peony almost never wears suits (he works in IT and wears jeans and t-shirts to work every day) but he’s one of those people whose entire image changes with a suit. Even when measuring him for the first time, the tailor commented that he has the ideal body type for a suit.

To tell you the truth, he looked so good and yummy that I was tempted to attack him right then and there. shy01 Ahem….my face is turning all red just thinking about how he looked.

I don’t want to post pictures because I want our guests to experience the wow-factor when they see him for the first time in his new tux. But the quality, the fit, and the overall appearance is nothing short of amazing. Even Mr. Peony, the GQ connoisseur himself, couldn’t believe it.

If you are in the market for a custom suit or tux and live in the tri-state area, the tailor we used is:

Momo Custom Tailor Inc
321 Broad Ave
Ridgefield, NJ 07657
(201) 313-5225

They are located in the same mall as the Ridgefield Hanahreum (H-Mart), and they also have a branch in Flushing. Each custom suit will set you back about $1000-$3000, depending on the fabric, and will take about 2-3 weeks from start to completion.

Mr. Peony told me that the price is very reasonable especially since high-end designers charge about the same anyway. In fact, he added, the quality surpasses some of the high-end designers. He’s very happy with his suits and tux and I’m looking forward to our wedding even more, knowing that I’ll have such a handsome man waiting for me at the end of the aisle!

My parents bought my hubby a custom suit when we got married too! I loved the whole process of picking out the fabric, details, etc. And it fits so perfectly…. it’s amazing.

What a nice gift and how great to have custom made suits & tux! Very cool!

I’m curious, did he have a tie custom made too? I’m searching high and low for someone to make a tie (I have the fabric) for my FI. So far no luck . . .

Maegan - the new issue of Martha Stewart weddings had something about custom made ties. They listed a website that you can send in the fabric and they will make a tie for you but i cant remember what it was…

What a great family story and tradition. Mr. Peony is a lucky guy. And I know what you mean about seeing your guy in a good suit. Heck even a cheap one will work. :)

Maegan, we didn’t have a tie made, but it was an option. If you’re near Ridgefield, NJ or Flushing, NY, give Momo a call!

Moi - The last couple of times I’ve visited Hong Kong, my bf and I have had suits made at Punjab House in Kowloon.

http://www.punjabhouse.com.hk/

They’re fantastic! My suits fit perfectly, and they’ve got a great selection of fabrics. The prices will range depending on the quality of fabric you choose, but I’ve found that the suits are still cheaper (and fits way better) than any suit you’ll find here in the states.
