About Me: In all my dreams of the man I'd someday marry, I never pictured anyone as perfect for me as Mr. Tulip. So now we just have to make it through the craziness of the wedding and the moving in together! I love crafts, sewing, jewelry making, and photography, so am looking forward to this chance for DIY fun. When not wedding planning, I'm playing with our dog and 4 cats, Ebay shopping, or watching too much TV (often simultaneously!).

Fun With Themes, Part III: 1920s/Art Deco

October 1st, 2007 @ 12:00 pm by Mrs. Tulip

The latest theme mosaic is inspired by my dear MOH, who was looking for a theme for her grandmother’s upcoming birthday party. Since her grandma was born in 1923, I thought a 1920s theme could be stylish and fun. The 1920s/1930s/Art Deco/Great Gatsby theme variations are also relatively common for weddings, so thought I’d also share the results here!

Images, from left to right, top to bottom:

1. You can download this Western Union template for free from this site, which has other free period paper goods for download as well as offering CD-Roms of period paper and period fonts. Wouldn’t the Western Union idea be great for Save the Dates or invitations?

2. Placecard holders from American Bridal, $5.15 for set of 4

3. Long strings of pearls or beaded flapper necklaces are a must! This one is $89 here.

4. Asian design had a strong influence in the early 1920’s, as shown in this House & Garden cover from 1921. There was also an Asian influence in fashion, such as a fad of women carrying paper parasols. (You can read much more about 1920s fashion here.)

5. Cloche hat from Martha Stewart Weddings

6. Drawing of a wedding gown from 1921, originally printed inVictorian Magazine

7. Life-sized dancers with cut-out faces, for rent from The Perfect Party

8. Fiestaware wasn’t invented until 1936, but it has a very art deco feel… (Vase, $39.98 at Amazon)

9. Old New York invitation suite from Ceci NY

10. Music from the era is a quick way to set the mood. Fred Astaire is one often overlooked, but charming, singer.

11. Cream and black favor boxes from Midori Ribbon

12. Collections of colorful Depression Glass have been featured in several bridal magazine shoots lately — you can be both chic and true to the era.

13. Actual 1920s slippers in near-perfect condition (and for a mere $550)

What to serve for food and drink? You can find a good description of 1920s dining here. This book has cocktail recipes from the 1920s-1960s. And for the nondrinkers, how about these great old soda fountain recipes??!

I thought Hannah (Hannikan) on The Knot did a great 20s theme wedding:

Love her invites, dress, and influences from the Tiffany windows at her beautiful 20s church.
