Mrs. Petunia's Picture
Mrs. Petunia, Ft. Lauderdale Age and Occupation: 31, College Professor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Engineering Student/Part-time Barista Engagement Date: December 8, 2006 Wedding Date: March 2, 2008 Venue: Riverside Hotel Blogging Since: August 6, 2007 About Me: Our original idea of running off to get married quickly turned into an event with 100+ guests once other people got involved and I, too, got swept away in the lovely madness that is wedding planning. Mr. Petunia and I are obsessed with all things World of Warcraft, Monopoly, and Nintendo, so we’re planning on including some fun “game-y” details into our wedding.
About Mrs. Petunia

We plan to let each of our guests know of his or her table assignment by using these holders, which, it is my hope, are meant to allude to the pewter Monopoly tokens players choose to represent them when they play the board game (after all, we’re naming the tables after properties, etc.).

I love that the guy is wearing a top hat, too — just like Mr. Monopoly would:

I ordered one so that I could get an idea of the actual size of the holder and the quality:

Now I have to figure out how I’m going to lay out these getaway cars on the table my venue provides me. With other types of place cards, there are so many better ways of getting creative, but with your standard circular table and place card holders, there seems to be only so much you can do:

Most of what I see entails the place cards radiating out from the center, as in spokes:

I also have to decide what to do about a flower arrangement. I want to replace the silk arrangement the venue provides, but should I do so with a tall arrangement or with a short and compact one, like here below?

Also, should the table be bare and show the wood, or should it be covered, perhaps with a tablecloth, or with something more interesting, like this one below is, with moss? (I don’t think I want moss myself, but I do like how they used something out of the ordinary here).

Finally I wonder: should I wait to order the place card holders only after my final head count is in or should I estimate the number of guests coming to the wedding and perhaps end up with a few extra getaway cars? After all, I can always use them as replacement pieces for my many games, should any originals ever go missing…

Oh, those place card holders are just perfect for your theme! What a great find. Would there be some way to replicate the look of Monopoly board squares on a mat or tablecloth to put underneath the little cars?

I don’t know about timing, but my imagination is having fun coming up with ways to display those cars.

How about on a ‘road’ around the table or a drive-in with the feature being a picture of the the two of you (of course this might put the cards backwards). Some funny way to use the word ‘park’ (park your bottom/park your car).

Or you could go with the old fashioned 1930’s monopoly images and just park the cars all around it. I did an image search on Google and found a patent sheet that looks pretty cool.

Or you create a giant “go” square and put them all on that. Too much monopoly? Okay, I’ll stop now. :)

Ooh Angel: I LOVE that patent image and I’m thinking of using it on our stamps for the invites. I love your idea of placing the cars as if on a road…just gotta figure out how to do it…!

You could set the escort cards table up with a vintage Monopoly board/set? Ebay?

Oh! Where is that final picture from? I love those tall vases!

And your Monopoly theme is so great! I love the idea — if you could work in a Monopoly board, or something reminiscent of one, that would be fantastic!

You’ve got to do some sort of board game set up where the cars are along the spaces!

Thanks, Miss Petunia!

Not to add to your DIY to-do list, but maybe you could do a basic grey or brown road through the moss. I looked up some hobby shops on line and it looks like you can use foam board to create the look. I found this info on http://trains.com

“Foam board can be divided into two categories: boards with no finished surface and those with a rigid top coating. The first group, which most modelers use, includes the blue and pink insulation board available at lumber and home improvement stores. Many modelers use this material for scenery. It’s a great choice for hills and mountains. There’s a related material that also has hobby applications- foam board with a finished top surface. This material works especially well for building structures, streets, and roads.”

What I saw of the picture, it looks kind of like kitchen tiles. Hope that helps!

Ellen: that picture came from the The Queen of Hearts Wedding Consultants website (they’re out of Philly, I believe).

I’m going to have to give some serious thought to how I’m going to set this table up…

When I saw the pic, the first thing I thought was Monopoly cars! I’m sure you guests will get it. Great find, and very cute theme.

Where are these cars from? They are great. I’d like to see what else they have.

along similar lines with angel’s idea - what if you stacked circular pans (like cake pans covered in paper), or stacked circular pieces of foamboard, to make a pedestal of sorts to display the cars? kind of like how people display cupcakes.

I love the cars! Where’d they come from?? My fiance and I are thinking about going with the Monopoly theme as well… I wish I could take credit but it was definitly his idea. I’m super excited that someone else had the same idea.
