And Now, Programs

October 2nd, 2007 @ 3:23 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

After a few weeks of debating about the ceremony program, we’ve decided to go the easy route: making it a scroll. I’d love to have a nice booklet, or a pretty fan type of thing, but I am not handy with crafts. My family really isn’t very crafty, either. And Now, Programs : wedding los angeles programs Sad019 sad019 I figured, even I could put make up something to print on a sheet of vellum, or some other paper.

I have a few more days until I need to start working on the program; we must meet with the music coordinator on Thursday to know which music we want. One huge hurdle is knowing what actually goes in the program. We’re having a Catholic ceremony, but without the mass and communion. This isn’t common, I’ve heard. What truly kicked me in the face was the realization that our 9:30am ceremony didn’t need to be that early. Why not? Because we never thought about the lack of readings and songs due to the no mass/communion thing. Crap. Of course, we thought of this AFTER the invites went out.

So, the meeting with our music coordinator will be the deciding point. Which songs? When to place the songs? The book they gave us to aid in our scheduling has all the slots for the mass and the communion. This totally confuses me since I have no idea which readings we MUST choose, and which ones we don’t have to have. Mr. Kiwi, in his Catholic school educated way, has no idea what we’re supposed to do, either, since he has never seen a Catholic wedding without the mass/communion.

On the bright side, we won’t need very elaborate programs! This makes me VERY happy, and I can’t wait to get started on them. Mr. Kiwi has a few jobs regarding this: meet with the music coordinator and I, and to find the John Wooden quote we want to add to the bottom of the program. In case you don’t know, John Wooden is a legend in college basketball, and Mr. Kiwi’s idol. Wooden has been known for memorable quotes, and the famed “Pyramid of Success” in regards to sports. Mr. Kiwi has used Wooden’s quotes at the end of every sports memo he sends out, and should we find one that is fitting, we’re going to use it!

What quote are you using in your programs?

Miss Kiwi- We’re doing a Catholic ceremony without communion too. This site: http://www.csme.catholic.org.au/liturgy.html has information on the ceremony with and without mass…although I just noticed the site says it is just supposed to be for Australian Catholic weddings. I would assume it’s similar here though….basically all you leave out is the stuff directly relating to communion. You still do the entire liturgy of the word with all of the readings. The booklet you have should give you a few choices for each of the readings.

A little insight on the ceremony sans the communion. If you love music the way I do….adding in a couple extra songs to the ceremony could add some time.

Use those songs to light your unity candle, present a special rose or gift to both of your mothers and the Virgin Mary statue.

Ask for a nice long sermon covering a topic you guys feel is important. Do a few extra readings of not just Bible versus maybe poems too.

I’ve battled with this because I am Catholic but am having a non-church wedding in a woodsy chapel. We’re going to add parts like making sure we all say the Lord’s Prayer, the Apostle’s Creed and lots of music!

Good luck!

I agree — add all the special music you want. Not every parish allows non-Bible readings, so might need to see if you can clear that in advance with the church coordinator.

Miss Kiwi, the Catholic marriage ceremony without a Mass is called The Liturgy of the Word. I am surprised your church or officiant did not give you the information on what is included. See http://www.theknot.com/co_profileview.htm?profilename=Catholic_Bride#7

You may have to have any readings or quotes pre-approved, as well as your program. I’d recommend you check with your officiant on this.

hi miss kiwi! you should’ve received the little book called Together for Life. In it, you have all of the selections of prayers and readings. you’ll still have the normal opening prayer and Liturgy of the Word, so you’ll need to pick a 1st reading (Old Testament), a Responsorial Psalm, a 2nd reading (New Testament), and a Gospel reading. You’ll need to select how you want the Sacrament of Marriage portion (repeat after me, or just answer “i do”) and you’ll need to select your prayers of the faithful. before or after the prayers of the faithful, you can have the lighting of the unity candle and any blessings of the bible and rosary if you’re having that. then you’ll have the our father, nuptial blessing and sign of peace. you may do the offering to mother mary after that if you wish. and then you’ll have the final blessing and be presented as husband and wife!

there are actually quite a few things that you can re-word to your liking and you just need to get them approved by the priest. if he’s not too strict, he should be okay with it. let me know if you need any further details. i’m in the LA area too, and i’ve helped design wedding ceremonies, esp catholic ones. so just holler. :)
