Vera Wang Chicago

I always knew that I would be wearing an Indian outfit for my wedding. Growing up, I definitely indulged fantasies of donning an elaborate Vera Wang gown for my nuptials (with Will Smith as the groom of course!). But I think I always knew that wearing an Indian bridal outfit, something that really honored my background and culture, was very important to me.

Unfortunately, the experience of trying on Indian wedding outfits is not as luxurious as that of trying on American wedding dresses (more on that to come in a later post). I felt that I was missing out on the ultimate American bridal experience: wedding dress shopping. I decided to visit a bridal salon in Chicago to see what all the fuss is about. And what better place than Vera Wang?

I made an appointment at the Vera Wang Bridal Boutique in Chicago, which had been scarcely open a few weeks at the time. I arranged it so my appointment was during my parents’ visit to Chicago, so we could make it a real mother-daughter outing.

The interior was all white, with plush white seats. Vera Wang’s books and china collection were on display. Oh and the gowns. The room was surrounded on all sides by the most beautiful wedding gowns and I had ever seen. I was blown away by all the lovely white confections hanging around the boutique, all lace, and tulle, and satin. I started to feel uneasy: would I change my mind about wanting an Indian bridal outfit? Was I going to be a Vera Wang convert?

My appointment was with Amy, who was right on time and sweet as pie. She explained the process to me and asked me to describe the look I was going for and what type of wedding gown I envisioned. Then we walked around the store, looking at each dress, and I chose five to try on. Amy was wonderful– she gave lots of great input on what dresses I might like and was completely sweet and bubbly. She asked me all about my fiance and how he proposed and she seemed genuinely interested in getting to know me, as opposed to just making a sale. She also really engaged my mother in the process. My mom was totally new to the whole American wedding-dress buying experience, but she had a great time and Amy was a big part of that.

As for the dresses– they are just exquisite. It would not be exaggerating to say they are works of art. There really is something to be said for the way a couture gown fits and Vera Wang’s dresses could make any bride feel like a princess. The prices, while certainly not cheap, are somewhat reasonable considering the attention to detail and craftsmanship of each dress. The dress I’m wearing below was my favorite. It made my waist feel small and the embroidered flowers were so delicate and lovely. When Amy put the veil in my hair, with the soft tulle draping over my shoulders, I was tempted to put down the Amex right then and there for the whole ensemble.

But I also knew, more at that moment than ever, that I still wanted to wear an Indian bridal outfit. I loved seeing the reflection of myself in the American bridal outfit, but I felt more like I was playing dress-up than a real bride. I realized how important it was for me to get married in an Indian bridal outfit.

Overall, my experience trying on dresses at Vera Wang was very favorable– they made it a really enjoyable experience for me and my mom. I would highly recommend any Chicago-area brides-to-be make an appointment!

I LOVED that store too! The sales people were really sweet and helpful. The owner even came over to assist. She looks/acts/dresses just like Charlotte from Sex and the City and my mom and I couldn’t stop calling her Charlotte. If I wouldn’t have found my VW dress as a sample elsewhere, I would definitely have bought it there!

i love the indian wedding clothes (is lengha the right term?). my fiance is indian (i’m not), but his family is catholic and very americanized, so we’re sticking with a tradition white wedding. however, i know my guests will be super colorful and i’m excited for that. one of my bridesmaids is actually getting me a sari to wear to the rehearsal dinner, which i’m really excited about. i’ve worn a salwar kameez a couple times, but never a sari.

i can’t wait to see all of you wedding related outfits!

I actually had a great experience at the NY Vera Wang store. I must have visited about 6 bridal salons in total and Vera Wang was far and away the nicest, most comfortable, and most gorgeous! I *may* be going back there shortly to make a purchase…!

Gisella: I have a post coming up about buying my Indian bridal outfit, but it might not be what you expect :)

This is a great article from Nirali Magazine about Indian bridal shopping in India (the best places to go all over the subcontinent): http://niralimagazine.com/2007/06/shaadi-shopping-subcontinental-style/

Or if you’re shopping in the US, I have some suggestions of retail stores depending on where you’re located. Are you on the west coast, east coast, or midwest?

I agree w/ Amy — sounds like you got the ROYAL treatment in Chicago. NYC can be standoffish (maybe depends on the salesperson).

A wedding is suppose to be a fun and delightful experience however Vera Wang has left a bad taste in my mouth.

Both the bride and myself, her bridesmaid, bought dresses from the New York store and it has been one problem after another. It began with the rude service by undertrained staff who found it difficult to make bookings correctly or respond to correspondance. The main shock however was my bridesmaid dress which is unbelievably poorly made - I was shocked.

To begin with the sales associate firstly recommended that I should take a size bigger than needed which I thought was odd so I said no and took the size which my measurements fitted into. When the dress arrived it was still too big! I was then astounded to find unfinished edges on parts of the dress and they were already fraying - the sales assistant said all the dresses this style were the same and as this fabric edge is folded over you can’t see it - well I can saw it very easily. I have never bouhgt a dress with unfinished edges! Then I tried the dress on - it was uneven … the dress is so poorly made. The side with the invisible zip fits fine but the other side is completely two inches larger. As a professional designer and dressmaking organization I would expect that a Vera Wang dress would be made properly and evenly. Anyone with any sewing ability would know how to compensate in a pattern for an invisible zip.

So I old them I wasn’t happy - well they don’t like complaints. I had their head dressmaker look at it and her response was; this is how all the dresses this style are, I was shocked. She agreed that it was uneven and asked me to try their sample on in the same style to prove the point that all the dress are made poorly and unevenly and therefore don’t fit properly!

Would someone get the pattern fixed then or alert the factory to fix this issue!

No where have I ever bought a dress that is uneven and it is not cheap either. I have just returned from an external dressmaker who told me she fixes numerous dresses from Vera Wang due to the poor quality of workmanship.

This has been a very, very disappointing experience when it should have been perfect!
