About Mrs. Daisy

Le Soundtrack

October 9th, 2007 @ 12:50 pm by Mrs. Daisy

Because every other Bee is posting about her first dance, I realize I never a) posted my wedding “soundtrack” and b) reviewed my wedding musicians. (also, I *know* you all missed my wedding posting marginally terribly, so here we go).

Soundtrack to marry by:

Processional:

Gob_3

I had a lot of creative ideas for what songs would accompany our walks down the aisle. Mr. Daisy had some suggestions…The Final Countdown by Europe or Another One Bites the Dust by Queen. But, alas, the Europe one was too evocative of Gob and Mr. D’s brother already called dibs on the Queen. And, oh yeah,THERE WAS NO FREAKING WAY I WAS DOING ANYTHING BUT SAPPY TRADITIONAL STUFF.

I mean, we’d hired a quartet (flute, violin, viola and cello) of classical musicians. How do you not exploit that? So we went with:

- Air on a G String from Suite #3 - Johann Sebastian Bach (for the bridal party + Mr. Daisy)
- Canon in D
- Johann Pachelbel (for me!)

Recessional: Mr. Daisy and I are all about the music, so we wanted at least some of the classical music to be a little kicky. And “our song” (i.e. the one we both loved best and then–in the category of moments to be filed under “it must be a sign we’re meant to be”*–the one that came up at the same time on both our set-to-shuffle iTunes while we were on the phone after our very first date) was Flowers in the Window by Travis.

So we bought the sheet music and had our brilliant classical quartet arrange/learn it prior to the wedding. I am so so so happy we did! It was such an uptempo, bright, happy song that totally fit the moment right after the “you may now kiss the bride” statement. Celebratory and meaningful both…

Our Entrance into the Reception: Islands in the Stream (performed by our band)

Our First Dance: The Luckiest by Ben Folds. This is the song to which Mr. D and I danced our “routine” (read: the half-assed choreographed steps that we *barely* managed not to screw up despite many $$$ spent on lessons). The reason I know that, in retrospect, this was the perfect song? We must have heard it about a thousand times over the course of all of our dance lessons and I *never* grew sick of it. I’m still not. Sweetest. Lyrics. Ever.

I don’t get many things right the first time
In fact, I am told that a lot
Now I know all the wrong turns, the stumbles and falls
Brought me here
And where was I before the day
That I first saw your lovely face?
Now I see it everyday
And I know
That I am, I am, I am
The luckiest
What if I’d been born fifty years before you
In a house on a street where you lived?
Maybe I’d be outside as you passed on your bike
Would I know?
And in a white sea of eyes
I see one pair that I recognize
And I know
That I am, I am ,I am
The luckiest
I love you more than I have ever found a way to say to you
Next door there’s an old man who lived to his nineties
And one day, passed away in his sleep
And his wife; she stayed for a couple of days
And passed away
I’m sorry, I know that’s a strange way to tell you that I know we belong
That I know
That I am, I am, I am
The luckiest

Father/Daughter and Mother/Son dance: for this one we went with sappy again.

- I Hope You Dance by Leann Womack

Cake Cutting: reprise of Flowers in the Window, the Travis version.

Ok, long enough post without vendor reviews–those to come soon! (maybe even in time for our one-year anniversary…!)

* especially if you are super cheesy like I am. While I happened to be right about this with Mr. D, in full disclosure, I must confess I delusionally optimistically found signs along the way with lots of guys who were *not* (oh so very not) my one true love. (albeit signs along the lines of “I noticed you have braces. I have braces too.“)

We’re using The Luckiest for our first dance too!

I was thinking about Flowers in the Window for our walk back down the aisle too! Where did you get the sheet music? (I know nothing about these things)

FI and I want to use the Final Countdown as our intro song for our reception. We are both huge Arrested Development fans :)

I love Travis! I’m glad you’re posting again…I’ve missed you.

we were also thinking about doing the final coutdown song - but for our reception entrance song. none of our friends are AD fans, so we opted with the Entourage theme song.

I think it’s crazy (in a good way) that the songs the fiance and I have been throwing around to use (The Luckiest, Better Together, and others) are on this site and seriously, I feel like no where else. I’ve never had the pleasure of attending a wedding with these songs, and while I sigh at the loss of the “different” song, I love that there are other people out there that think they’re as great as I do!

I completely echo what MJ said - it’s exciting to see other brides that think/thought along the same lines as I am for the wedding. :)

Oh we used “The Final Countdown” all right. It was a great song to play for the entrance of our attendants. They really embraced it coming in.

We used The Luckiest too. What kind of dance did you do to it? Our dance instructor said it was “kind of” a rhumba so that’s what we learned, but we could never get comfortable with all the speeding up/slowing down of tempo plus all the rhumba steps seemed too upbeat, so we ended up doing the traditional 7th grade hold’n’sway.

Ironically our first dance is “The Luckiest” as well. And we considered “Flowers in the Window” but went with “The Boy With the Arab Strap” for the recessional. And being big AD fans almost did our intro to “The Final Countdown”, but we’re using “Song 2″ by Blur instead. One thing I could always say about you Mrs. Daisy is that you have excelent taste in music (except Pachabel’s Canon is a little hackneyed, no?).

Welcome back Mrs. Daisy! Haha… I was laughing so hard at the mention of Gob… It used to be my boyfriend’s ringtone but I’d be hysterically gasping for air whenever he called (too much laughing), so I canned it :)

Reilly says:

We used the Final Countdown and pretended to flick cards ala Gob, and our attendants entered to Under Pressure

I love “The Luckiest” too!! it’s the background song and the final song on my wedding video! :)

Thanks for the welcome back, ladies! (and sorry for delayed response–Mr. Daisy and i were tied up at a closing yesterday to buy a new place. so yay!)

JC, e me if you want the sheet music for Flowers in the Window–i have it at home as a PDF, i think!

Erin, we did a modified foxtrot to ours. but with a lot of promenades and spins and then even a bit of slowed down waltz for a portion. nothing that would pass muster with Bruno Tonioli, but it served its purpose!

and, MJ, i so know what you’re saying. i was the only “Luckiest” bride i knew–but i think we’re all in good company!

JC says:

Mrs Daisy - It would be great if you have the sheet music easily accessable and could sent it to me! My email is carrieaj at gmail dot com. Thank you :)
