About Mrs. Canary

Nice To Meet You!

October 9th, 2007 @ 10:59 am by Mrs. Canary

Hello, fellow bees!

First off, I am just so excited to join the other fabulous bees and the new class of birdie bees. I love birds! As a child, I did own a canary. He was bright yellow and would sing if you whistled too him. Unfortunately, he met a bitter end when my younger cousin was visiting and decided he wanted to take the bird out to “play.” Needless to say, young cousin gripped a little too hard and my poor canary died prematurely.

Onto happier thoughts… I’m also trying to incorporate birds into the wedding. I just love how they look graphically and they will tie in so well with my “modern chinoiserie” theme. So in short, I’m thrilled to be Miss Canary!

Mr. Canary and I met on the first day of college during freshman matriculation at Boston University and we’ve been together since! The odd thing is that we’ve never lived in the same city together for more than six months. In college, we were apart for most summers because Mr. Canary is a Boston native and I am a New Yorker. Then of course, we both studied abroad at different times (me: Italy; Mr. C: Spain). After college, we both lived in the Boston area for a while and I was offered a great transfer opportunity with my job in New York, so I moved back. Mr. Canary and I have been managing with the long distance relationship for a little over two years. Fast forward to today, Mr. Canary has moved in with me in my parents’ home while we wait for our condo’s completion. We’re finally going to live together and play house. ;)

I have to admit, it’s been very tough at times, but we made it! I can’t wait to marry Mr. Canary and start our life together in our own home.

We are planning a fairly large multi-cultural wedding in Manhattan. It’s been a challenge to find ways to blend our personalities, interests, and namely cultures (I’m Chinese and Mr. C is Swedish/Italian/French-Canadian), but I know it will pay off in the end! We are the first of our friends to get married, so we also see the wedding as a great family affair as well as a reunion of sorts for our friends who are scattered all around the world.

We’re both creative types from opposite ends of the spectrum, Mr. Canary is a journalist who loves film and music, while I’ve worked at advertising agencies, an art museum, and a shellfish farm, so my loves range from modern art & graphic design, crafts and of course food! I’m crafty and love making things, but rarely have time to do much about it. Though when I do, it can get kinda crazy and nuts about having everything come out right. One thing we both share is the love of books and printed materials, except of course mine are all art catalogues and his are all music/film biographies and criticism. We’re already negotiating the shelf space in our future apartment.

Although our venue is in New York, I was living in Seattle when we first got engaged, so our vendors are from all over the map. I can’t wait to share details about some of the most fantastic people I’ve met in this industry. And (if you can’t tell already) I’m ecstatic to be part of such a positive community!

Chirping off…

Miss Canary

So excited to have a Bostonian-ish person! Even though your wedding is in NY, it will be cool to hear about your experiences and adventures in Boston, too.
Good luck, and welcome!

Welcome! You’re having a modern chinoiserie theme. Have you checked out May 2007 issue of Domino Magazine? They had a feature on chinoiserie. You should search their website for some ideas. I love that mag.

norcalbruin: That’s where I got the idea from! I couldn’t put my finger on how to articulate “Asian, but not really” and then I saw it in Domino! Thanks for the tip though. I heart Domino too. Have you checked out their blog online? One of my new faves is also Blueprint.

becss: How awesome! We met at “Splash.” Did they have that when you were there? Hehe. I’m glad we’re not the only BU Alums getting married.

becss says:

haha that’s awesome - yeah they had splash! actually, judging by your age, we were probably all at the same matriculation ceremony!

Miss. Canary - That’s funny. Domino is great place for ideas. I also read Blueprint which is also a great source.
