Losing Weight For Lazy Geeks

October 10th, 2007 @ 6:01 pm by Mrs. Peony

Yes I’m exactly that: a lazy geek. A lazy geek with a very short attention span. So how would someone like me lose weight for her wedding?

I really want to get rid of the 15 lbs I accumulated over the past 5 years. Averaging 3 lbs per year, it’s not that bad….until your “fat” jeans start to feel snug!

I’ve tried practically every fad diet since I started gaining this weight. I gave up Atkins after just one week because I love carbs too much (I’m Korean and I grew up on rice and noodles…..I can’t live without them!).

I stayed on South Beach for a couple of months and lost about 10 lbs, but the meals were too restricting for me and I began to tire of making my own meals. See, I told ya I was lazy. I quickly regained all that weight.

Weight Watchers was pretty good and I lost 10 lbs in three months. However, the point-counting became irritating and group meetings were not for me. I tried the online version but I need more discipline. Again, I regained that weight.

After watching a commercial for NutriSystem at 3am, I decided to place an order for a month’s supply of food. After a week, I decided that the reason people lost weight on this program is because the food is so horrible. I distributed the remainder of the food to my friends.

For someone as lazy as me, I figured that I needed either a personal chef or pre-packaged meals if I really wanted to control my diet. Zone delivery meals was an option, but I balked at the $40+/day price.

So last week, I joined Jenny Craig.

The program works like this: from the minute you join until your halfway mark (halfway to your goal weight), you eat their prepackaged food. After your halfway mark, you start substituting your own food little by little, and once you reach your target, you should know enough about portions and healthy foods to be completely off their food. Every week I go in to meet with a personal weight loss consultant who weighs me, helps me plan my menu for the following week, and talks to me about any weight loss struggles or successes. It’s not completely restricting because I can have unlimited veggies throughout the day, and they offer dining-out guides and tips.

It’s perfect for someone like me who needs the discipline and also wants someone to tell me exactly what to eat. It’s a bit pricey at about $100 per week for the food, but honestly….the food is great. I was really pleasantly surprised by it. Even Mr. Peony tried some and said it’s pretty good.

My consultant wants me to lose the 15 lbs in two to three months. However, I signed up for a year’s membership which offers increased discounts on food as you lose more weight, and includes stay-on-track consultations once you reach your targeted weight. This way, even if I lose the weight in just three months, I will have help keeping it off well after the wedding.

As for exercise…..traditional methods of exercise never worked for me because of my laziness and my short attention span. I tried jogging but I need more stimulation. I don’t like yoga or pilates because frankly, I find them boring. So I’ve decided that the best exercise for me is the Wii and DDR. Wii boxing, in particular, is a great option for brides who want toned arms. DDR has always been fun for me because I kick arse at it. silly063 Seriously - I play with two DDR pads at a time.

And coming this holiday season, just in time to help me get in shape for my April wedding, is WiiFit! I had been eagerly awaiting its release ever since I bought my Wii (Mr. Peony and I stood in line starting at 3am to get it on release day), and Gizmodo announced today that it will be released in Japan on December 1 with a pricetag of 8,800 yen ($75 US), which most likely means that it will be available in the states soon after at a slightly higher price.

Looks fun, no?

Do you have any other tips for a lazy geek like me?

I had no idea wii fit was coming! I cannot wait! I have been facing the same struggle but luckily I have almost 2 years to lose the 25 lbs. I’m doing weight watchers now and as long I actually follow the plan it definitely works. Keep us posted on Jenny and good luck!

Ok, I’m not so much a geek, but I do have to force myself to work out. I feel better when I do it, so that’s a good incentive, but I have to do it in the morning before work or I won’t do it at all. And getting up at 4:30 a.m. each day (except Wednesday…that’s my day off!) SUCKS.

So I take my fiance with me on Mondays and Fridays, and I see my personal trainer on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Perfect combo in my case! Then I just need one more day on the weekend (usually Saturday) and my weekly workouts are complete.

You have to do what’s fun for you, is what I’ve discovered. I don’t spend all 30 - 40 minutes of cardio doing just one machine. Now I mix it up between the eliptical and the treadmill, and I used to have the upright bike in there too but I got tired of it. I LOVE weight training, so that’s not an issue for me at all.

Sounds like you’re on the right track. I’ve been a member of Jenny Craig since I was 21 (bought a lifetime membership back then, even though I haven’t used it since 2000), and I have to say that I STILL crave certain food they have available! So have fun with that, and have fun with your Wii! That should do the trick, sista…

I saw the article about Wiifit today! I am so excited! Good luck, I find that portion control and moving everyday work for me! I joined a women’s running group and we meet 2x a week and run for an hour, now we are up to about 5.5 miles. We talk and laugh and gossip the whole time, maybe a good choice for you too?

Miss Peony, I was just going to post this question on the Board. I, too, am a super lazy person when it comes to exercising. When my friends invite me to go exercise, I play dead. I’m a petite and slim person, but I need to tone my body and get rid of my pudgy stomach before my wedding. The Wiifit looks like fun, but I don’t have a Wii. So what else can a lazy-a** like me try?

I can’t wait for WiiFit either!

I hate going to the gym and refuse to go take classes. what’s worked best for me was getting a $100 Gazelle, setting it up in front of my TV, and working out for 20-30 minutes a day - or whatever I can muster up the energy for. Between that and keeping fewer bags of potato chips in my house, I lost 10 pounds.

Miss Peony, I challenge you to DDR!! All my Asian friends are always so impressed with my DDR skills, considering I’m just a white, Jewish girl.
If you like the gaming-fitness route, I HIGHLY suggest Yourself Fitness. I have it for PS2, but it may be available for other gaming systems as well. It works like a virtual personal trainer, but you use the controller to increase or decrease the level of intensity of the exercised, and it keeps track of your increase in strength and fitness. Plus, you can select what area you want to focus on over the next few months — arm strength, leg strength, flexibility, overall weight loss, etc. You should definitely check it out.

fitsugar.com has great 4 or five minute workout videos that are great and challenging. If you can do one or two a couple times a week, you should be set.

Push ups during commercials…horrid but they work!

My mom and sister went in together and bought a used PS2, a DDR game, and two mats for Christmas last year. I still suck at it, but it’s the most fun exercising I’ve had in a long time

Haha, Miss Peony, you’re exactly like me! I’m an untoned blob of geeky girl, too. I also get bored really quickly, I have to be doing something with my mind as I work out–I’ve totally considered taking my DS with me to the gym to use on the stationary bikes. ^^;

I’m gonna have to start on a regimen of wii boxing, if there is one thing I really want to work on, its my arms!

I can’t wait for wiifit…! And harvest moon wii, and mario galaxy… ok, now I’m just going off-topic. ;)

For the Wii workouts, or even DDR (both of which, I love!) try getting the wrist or ankle weights (2-3 lbs per limb, usually). This definitely adds some resistance and will go a ways in toning!

sparkpeople.com is a nice, varied site with a lot of silly incentives (online tropies! w00t!) for people who need competition. They also post neat workout videos on YouTube–my favorite used to be a chair workout for the office…until my office blocked YouTube.

My advice (which you already seem to be following) - make sure your ‘work-outs’ are something you enjoy. If you’re hating it - you won’t stick with it.

Another good way to keep motivated is to have a work-out partner. Even if it’s a set time to play DDR every week. A - You’ll have someone depending on you, so you’re less likely to skip the work-out. B - It’s guaranteed time to catch up with a friend!

I’m training for a 1/2 marathon right now - which is my tried and true way to lose weight. Having the race as a goal usually makes me stick to my work-outs. I’m absolutely HATING the running though. HATING! I’ve pretty much hated it ever since I ran a marathon last year - marathon training took away my joy of running :( Plus before I was sleeping alone - so it was easy to get up and run at 6am - now I just want to snuggle in with my hubby and spend the mornings getting ready with him! Not at the gym!
