Nails Or Legs?

October 10th, 2007 @ 10:29 am by Mrs. Kiwi

There are so many things I want to do before the wedding: get my legs waxed, get my brows waxed, get a facial, get a pedicure and a manicure, get my roots touched up… Unfortunately, I don’t have the time (or spare cash) for all of those, so I must choose.

While I don’t want to look like Baby Gerald from The Simpsons, I figure I can tweeze my brows myself. I can also shave my legs myself, since I’ve done it for many many years! Luckily, I’m not a hairy person, so I won’t look like this:

Since I can’t possibly go out with peeks of gray showing through my black hair, I will have to get my roots done. As for the mani/pedi, I think I can squeeze that into the budget. It’s kind of hard to choose which beauty item to go with! Mr. Kiwi (mantastic as he is) won’t even know the difference between shaved and waxed, which is good for me! It’s odd, because in real life (outside wedding planning), I’d much rather go with waxed brows/legs instead of the manicure and pedicure!

What is the most important beauty item you want/need for the wedding? Is it different from what you’d want outside the wedding?

Have you thought about looking into cosmetology/aesthetics schools in your area?

I had a student give me a fantastic facial just a couple of months ago, and it was cheap! $40 for an hour and a half! I’m definitely planning to go back before the wedding!

Why don’t you just go to a cheap nails place? You could go for a manicure but do the pedicure yourself and just have them do the nail polish.

My plan is to have my hair and makeup done. I’ll probably take care of any waxing and stuff myself, but I’m a space cadet when it comes to doing my own hair and I don’t really wear makeup, so I need to hire the pros!

I’d say get your brows done once and then just maintain them yourself with plucking. Brows are very important, IMO. Also, get your hair colored professionally. As for the rest, DIY. Do you know how your skin would react to a facial?

My fav beauty related bridal purchases? MAC lipstick in dubonnet and Make Up For Ever’s full cover concealer.

I was all freaked out because I thought that a wedding meant I had to get things waxed, plucked, and polished. I even looked into laser hair removal (something I didn’t do in non-wedding life).

In the end, I went with getting my eyebrows done at Gene Juarez, nails done by a local woman, and just using a razor like I always had. My eyebrows and nails were going to be in pictures, so I figured that was a good way to go.

If it weren’t for this wedding I wouldn’t concern myself with the facials, but it has been a sweet luxury.

Go with the brows. They really frame the face and can change a person’s whole look (in a good way). Make sure you go to someone good otherwise you may get a bad surprise if they take off too much hair or make a shape you don’t like.

You can get a good mani/pedi cheap, cheap ($25 total) anywhere in the city of LA (as opposed to the valley or Santa Monica). Go to one of the shops with the massage chairs-they’re best. Go to a neighborhood where there are a lot of shops–they are cheapest b/c of competition (mid-wilshire, westwood blvd, etc.). They also usually do waxes. I get my brows done where I get my nails done and it is usually b/w $5 and $8 dollars. You can bring in a white make up pencil (about 99cents) and draw over the part of the brow you want removed. Get it done two weeks befor the wedding and maintain the shape on your own. That way if you react porrly to the wax or a few hairs are over done, they have time to grow. However, if you don’t normally wax, don’t suddenly do it befroe the wedding. Too many people have a bad reaction to wax.

I would say the mani is important if you plan to have pics of your ring taken. And of course the roots since that will be in the pictures too.

I hate the concept of paying someone to paint my nails…#1, I hate people touching my hands and feet (I’m very weird about this), and #2, it just seems silly to pay someone to do what I can do perfectly fine myself…but I sucked it up and did it, and paid for my girls’ mani/pedis too. It was supposed to be a bonding experience, but the shop was crazy, half of us were running late, and so it turned out to be a dash and go thing, but it was cheap, so it wasn’t that big a deal. As someone else said, everyone will be staring at your hands, and there will be photos…
