Another Weddingbee Bride?

October 12th, 2007 @ 12:34 pm by Mrs. Bee

One of our advertisers just contacted us because a website posted an ad she has on weddingbee on their site (without permission).  When I clicked over, I thought that the bride character on the front page was awfully familiar looking.  What do you think?

Uuuummmm…..YEAH!!!! Too similar for comfort……better make some changes and pronto!!! There’s only one Weddingbee bride…..

2.
triciaj says:

Wow… I’d say that’s dangerously close to copyright infringement.

3.
EmilyB says:

hum, yeah…

4.
tyffaknee says:

maybe they are related?
I joke, but yeah, looks like you got a copycat. :(

5.
M. says:

What’s the site?

6.
Susan Eva says:

Wow, that is seriously unethical. But, unfortunately, I do not think it is close enough to be copyright infringement. :(

7.
a says:

Bee’s bride is much sweeter and cuter–the copycat looks pretty devious to me.

8.
Miss Raspberry says:

SO NOT COOL!

I think it is absolutely close enough to be a copyright infringement!

They literally mirrored the bride - even all the colors used are the same.

9.
Mrs. Onion says:

Totally NOT cool! You get ‘em Bee!

10.
h says:

is this grounds for copyright infringement?

11.
Missy Jenn says:

Our bride is such much better looking and her flowers too! ;-) (but yeah the brides do look similar….)

12.
MissStrawberry says:

total copy.

13.
Angel says:

hahaha…she gave herself bigger boobs.

I’m not sure there’s much you can do. As long as 15% of the image is changed (what the graphics department has been told), there’s no issue. Well besides the fact that it’s not good business practice.

Are the words “Wedding Bee” on the image anywhere?

Mrs. Butterscotch says:

Yep I think they are really similar.

Miss Jasmine says:

I really think it could be close enough to potentially infringe upon the copyright. The two brides are extremely similar. In what capacity was the bride used (what type of advertisement)? I know a bit about copyright law and fair use from a class I took in law school, so if you want to email me on this subject, feel free!

milka says:

hair, dress, necklace, bouquet, coloring, posture, veil ALL THE SAME

17.
Linda says:

uggh, the other bride looks like she ill and has implants!

Talk about a bad copycat.

18.
ocicats says:

They do look similar. I think our bride is much classier looking w/ a prettier bouquet.

Miss Canary says:

Wow. That’s a total knockoff. Why do people do things like that?

20.
christigpa says:

Yup. Too close to call a coincidence.

Is Weddingbee and the bee bride image copyrighted? Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery…

BTW - the other girl’s bouquet is WAY too big for her and she’s holding it all wrong! (My effort at cattiness.)

Mrs. Bee says:

Miss Jasmine - the bride was used on a wedding website/blog as the character for the site similar to how we use our bride.

22.
AMK says:

LOL @ Linda’s implants comment…they’re totally bolt-on, too!

Yeah, too close for coincidence. Not cool.

23.
aoedorothee says:

i like our bride better!

24.
GlamourThisbyKelly says:

Wow they are very similiar!!!
On the other hand… it is extremely hard to win copyrighted causes…. being a graphic designer… there are 110 laws if not more… its almost as though the law protects the criminals rather then the rest of us.

Your bride is much better and prettier… but like christigpa

Extremely suspect!

sp says:

i’m wondering why this site was posting one of your advertisers’ ads. what incentive do they have for giving someone free advertising? enhancing their own credibiliy as a wedding blog site?

27.
MissBlueBear says:

Sue ‘em! =) They can take the bride, but they can’t take the Bee’s!

28.
BaghdadBride says:

Kind of reminds me of a Japanimation Weddingbee. I guess it would depend if you have weddingbee and the bride image copyrighted but it’s pretty hard to prevent people from taking images (bloggers do it all the time!) that’s why crediting ideas, images, pictures, layouts, etc. is so important if people are going to “borrow” them. At least weddingbee bride is better looking…and what’s with all the greenery on her flowers? eww

29.
Jenny says:

Dang it! That is a horrible rip-off. I like our bride better - she’s cuter! Boo to the copycat!

Miss Kiwi says:

Wow. Total copy. Yeah, a low-rent, plastic flower-holding copy, but still!

WB’s bride is SO much cuter, and actually looks sweeter. Isn’t that funny?

Not cool, other wedding website!

31.
rzblna says:

Send a cease-and-desist letter. It’s usually enough to get them to take it down.

32.
tanya2s says:

Hee– the boobs are just too funny. Impressive shadowing there!

Miss Peony says:

Ha! It’s actually kinda funny when you think about it. There’s no problem with starting another wedding-related site, but to blatantly copy another’s design and use the ads….you’re doing the right thing by posting about it! I would’ve plastered their URL everywhere but you’re too nice!

36.
Rockbride says:

Yea, I agree with rzblna. From my experience, sending a cease-and-desist letter should do the trick. And don’t just send one from yourself Mrs. Bee, have legal counsel do it on your behalf. Too bad the Bar results aren’t out yet, otherwise I’d draft one for you. Free of charge of course!

37.
Jessie says:

considering Weddingbee’s popularity, that’s pretty bold of the website to so blatantly copy your image like that….

she looks like a fobbified version. ;) heh.

Looks like the WB bride’s evil twin or something :-D

40.
Jann says:

The highest form of flattery, Mrs. Bee. I mean, you don’t see knock offs of Kmart brands, right? Haha.

41.
HappiestOne says:

I’m a graphic designer/illustrator - the images are VERY similar but different enough stylistically that I wouldn’t call them the same.

I don’t know … I think it would depend on what kind of site the bride is representing - if it isn’t the same concept as the wedding bee, then I wouldn’t worry about it. If they are trying to emulate the bee - then I would consider contacting them.

42.
Elizabeth says:

lol at jann’s comment. definitely, your WB’s bride looks way sweeter, the other one looks like the woman who stole another bride’s groom.

43.
Vivian says:

I agree with rzblna. If you just notify them, they will know that you are on to them and may prompt them to change it or something. I also agree with Rockbride, have a legal person send it. I will ask my FI tonight if you would like some help. Copyright is not his specialty, but the other site doesn’t know that.

44.
PhxBride says:

our flowers look so much more expensive :)

45.
natalie says:

That’s creepy. Its like the WB bride is Barbie and that bride is Jem (truly outrageous)!. The boobs comments cracked me up! Isn’t the WB bride supposed to be you, Mrs. Bee? That would make me grumpy.

46.
christine says:

it does look awfully similar but keep in mind that brides don’t have that many things that are different: an updo with a necklace, flowers, + a wedding dress.. raise your hand if YOU had that @ your wedding. does that mean you’re copying the bee mascot? :T

47.
jazzmatazz says:

the other one looks a bit meaner too.

48.
DisneyPrincess says:

That makes me sad! Copiers are so lame.

49.
creme_de_violet says:

That definitely looks like the Weddingbee bride. Boo!!! The Weddingbee bride is much, much cuter though.

50.
twelvetigers says:

She’s holding that bouquet like a baseball bat…

51.
mrs. fadingflowers says:

She looks pissed of getting married. It looks like her father is forcing her to get married with someone she doesn’t love. Ha Ha Ha

52.
Margo says:

You know, I have to disagree with almost everyone else (except Christine). Both animations have brides, and they may have seen your bride and wanted to make something similar, but they obviously created their own - her body is facing the “camera” a little bit more, her face is wider, her hair texture is different, her updo is in a different place on her head, her hands are in a different position, and others have already mentioned her freaky implants. (I’m not saying that you shouldn’t send a cease and desist letter - I do still think they saw the Bee bride and said, “Hey, I want one like that!” but I’m pretty sure they didn’t just steal your graphic. (I’m a terrible graphic artist, but I think it would be harder to modify the Bee bride to look like that than it would be to just draw their own.)

53.
Cindy says:

poser

54.
Annie says:

IMO, it’s not a copycat. When I think of a “standard” image of a bride, it would include (a) a white wedding dress, (b) red flowers and (c) pearls. I think it’s hard to “prove” whether someone ripped off your idea if many people have a similar image in their heads. Although, I do think that they look awfully similar.
