About Mrs. Magnolia

Just Not A Corsage Type of Mom

October 12th, 2007 @ 5:04 pm by Mrs. Magnolia

Yesterday, I headed over to our reception venue for the long-awaited meeting between my venue’s coordinator, my florist, and most importantly — my mom! I knew these ladies would all hit it off famously, and I was absolutely right. We spent far too long wandering from room to room, deciding which tables would go where, which centerpieces would look right in which room, on which table, with which linens…and also, figuring out how to get it all to fit within my budget!

I adore my florist, Bettina. She came very highly recommended by several people that I work with, and she did not disappoint. Seriously, I kind of want her to be my new best friend. (That is, in addition to the other best friends who just sent out an adorable shower invitation for me and Mr. Magnolia, but that’s another story!) She’s fun and engaging, creative and talented. And I can’t wait to see what she does for the flowers at our wedding.

So, after she chatted about bouquets with my mom and me for a few minutes, Bettina looked pensive for a moment. She sat back in her chair, took a deep breath (this is where I started to get nervous, thinking I’d blown my budget!), and said, “Miss Magnolia, here’s the thing…now that I’ve met your mom, I’ve got to tell you…

She’s just not a corsage type of mom.”

(Insert sigh of relief here)

“She looks more like your sister than your mom (Mama Magnolia is completely won over at this point), and a corsage would just be far too matronly, in my opinion.”

Well, I wasn’t going to disagree, because I’m not a big fan of pin-on corsages in general. But I also think that they’re better than wrist corsages…so what other option did we have?

Bettina to the rescue! She suggested that Mama Magnolia (as well as FMIL Magnolia) carry a clutch, and we could pin the corsage onto that.

I LOVED that idea.

Mama Magnolia’s dress is champagne, so I totally picture her carrying something like this:

…with something similar to this attached:

…although maybe a bit simpler.

I think the idea of attaching a fresh flower corsage to our mom’s clutches is a totally fun and modern way to go about this.

Because really, isn’t this lovely?

Good alternative…and great florist. How creative and sounds like she nailed it.

I wasn’t exactly into the pin on corsages either, so we went with the wrist ones. They were free, so I can’t complain too much, but I would have chosen to go with something a little different than the shiny opal ribbon that had nothing to do with our wedding what-so-ever.

That’s really really pretty! My mom just flat out refuses to wear a corsage and interestingly enough, my FMIL doesn’t want one either. My FMIL is only 47 so she thinks it’s too matronly… and then there’s my 61-year old mother who thinks the same! My mom is so funny, she’s a really youthful 61-year old, very trendy and fashionable and full of energy so there’s no way she’s wearing something she associates with “old ladies.”

My mom and I met with a couple florists this weekend and one suggested the mothers each carry a “nosegay” or very small short bouquet they they can hold in one hand while being escorted down the aisle. I think this will be a lovely alternative to a corsage.
Now the question is, do each of my fiance’s 3(!) mother’ get a nosegay (his biological mom, his stepmom who raised him, and the stepmom his father is currently married to!)?

Cute! I am so happy I live in HI where we have the option of giving lei (and hardly anyone does the corsage thing). Our moms and all the other special folk got them, as well as my hubs, but we stuck to boutanniers (? I can never spell that right) for the groomsmen and ushers.

My mother and mother in law carried nosegays and my stepmother and grandmothers had corsages. I wanted something special for just the moms
