A Scents-itive Issue…

October 13th, 2007 @ 6:40 pm by Mrs. Tulip

It is well known that scent is the sense most closely linked to memory. According to an article in this months Brides magazine, studies show that a person’s recall of particular scents beats her memory for things she has seen, even if the scent memory is tested much later. Hence the romantic theory behind buying special perfume for your wedding day — weeks, months, and even years later, your groom will smell that scent and be transported back to the magical moment he first saw you in your wedding finery.

Fantasy … meet reality. I explained this theory to Mr. Tulip, who confirmed my worst suspicions: “That’s a nice idea. But I can guarantee that most guys are not going to notice.”

Yeah, that’s pretty much what I was afraid of.

However, what’s a wedding if not a chance to justify purchases you wanted to make anyway??? In other words, meet my new wedding fragrance:

Rmehta20022002shop_1971_270490762
(Ines de la Fressange parfum, 3.4 oz, which I bought for $24.95 (less than half its list price!) on Ebay. Or a 3.4 oz tester is available for $18.95 here.)

Floral fragrances are tricky for me, not least because most of them seem to trigger my migraines. But this one is gorgeously sophisticated. Described as a blend of greens, warm flowers, and musk, it smells richly luxe. As is only fitting for a fragrance developed by the daughter of a French marquis, the model-muse of Karl Lagerfield at Chanel in the 1980s, and a fabulous designer in her own right. (And best of all, it’s migraine-free!)

Are you going with a special fragrance for your wedding day? If so, is it a traditional floral, or something completely different?

I had honestly never heard of having a wedding day scent. And I would have to say the most powerful memory scents that I have are the ones that were repeated: all the times my granny made her homemade applesauce, my mom’s makeup kit, the smell of a new puppy, my husband’s old flannel shirt from when we were dating. All of these things had repeat performances.

So for our wedding day we just smelled like us…and it was a great familiar scent that we know and love.

I have heard of this but never planned on doing it until I remembered that the my old signature scent (I Love Love by Moschino) is one that my fiance will always remember me by from our courting - I wear something different now. The thing about I Love Love is that it’s very expensive but is so light that it doesn’t have much staying power. Also, it’s gained quite a bit of popularity so it’s hard to come by the purse sized ones. I still wanted to include the memory of my old scent though. Luckily, Dolce & Gabbana’s Light Blue smells very close to I Love Love and it has a lot better staying power. So (to make a long story even longer) that has now become my wedding day scent. :) And I highly recommend it!

I didn’t wear a “wedding scent” although that is a great idea. I did consider having one carried throughout our wedding starting with the invitations (but I forgot to include it before I sealed the envelopes). However, I did purchase a new scent for my honeymoon which was a GREAT idea. My husband and I truly had the time of our lives on our honeymoon and the smell of that perfume floods my mind with memories in a way that looking at photos and reminiscing simply can’t. And, my husband still goes absolutely bonkers over it.

My fiance bought me a bottle of Chanel No. 5 when we first started dating and has always loved it on me. So that’s what I’m wearing all day.

I’ll be wearing J’adore by Dior.

Product Description:
Radiant, sensual, sophisticated, J’adore is a fragrance that celebrates the renaissance of extreme femininity and the power of spontaneous emotion with a brilliant bouquet of orchids, the velvet touch of Damascus plum, and the mellowness of amaranth wood.
