DIY Save The Dates

October 15th, 2007 @ 3:39 pm by Mrs. Chickadee

I stumbled across this knot bio a couple months ago, and it really struck a chord with me. I’d been back and forth about colors since we got engaged and when I saw this bio, I thought OMG BLACK WHITE AND YELLOW and haven’t been able to think anything else since, seriously. So then I decided to completely rip off this girls wedding. I’m sorry if you’re her, but I’m only doing it because I love you.

I obviously can’t have her exact wedding (there are no places with black and white flowered wallpaper in my town, I’m nearly certain) but I’m really in love with the color scheme.  But no one was really believing that it’d really look good. My mom just kept saying “yellow, like a bumblebee?” So I decided to take action and go find what I wanted.

I live in the middle of nowhere in Illinois and we don’t have fancy schmancy stores like Paper Source or fancy stationery places. But we do have Hobby Lobby…and that’s apparently all I needed. Especially since everything was 50% off. :)

Soooo, as you can tell, I am mucho excited by this! I still have a good couple months before I actually need to send out STDs, but when inspiration strikes…well, what can you do?

So pretty!

And as a side note, even now living somewhere with Paper Source and the like, I totally miss Hobby Lobby. :(

I too, am obsessed with this girl’s wedding!
Beautiful!
My friend had a B&W and yellow wedding and it was beautiful as well. My only advice is if you are going to go for it, really go for it like this girl did–black and white printed dresses, invitations, etc. It’s dramatic, but awesome!
In another life, I would’ve done black and white and magenta.

So gorgeous I am now rethinking my own invitations. Not in black & white & yellow, but that design could translate to any colour. Lovely!

Your invitations are gorgeous! I love the effect. Very vintage 1920’s but with a modern twist!

The save the dates look so classy. Not to be too picky, but the one thing I’d point out before you send your invitations is I assume the “H” will be your new married monogram. Unless this is extra cute because you share the “H” already, you’re really not “supposed” to use your married monogram until post ceremony (so for menus etc).

That being said — do whatever makes you happy, just thought I’d give you a heads up! I LOVE the pattern — so great. I used a similar feeling (except using brown, not black) with the patterns in my invitations and bridesmaids dresses. If you can keep this element throughout it will really bring everything together.

Love Love Love this idea. I was wondering how easy it would be to make a color combo like this work without being cheesy. I love how modern and sleek and beautiful it is!

Yes, your version is awesome! I love it! It came out perfect. Now your mom will get it. Sometimes uncreative people need a serious visual in order to understand the whole concept!

I’m also one of many obsessed with her wedding! Her colors, pix, dress! WOW!

Thanks for all the input girls!

Mrs. Onion: our last initial is actually the same, so we don’t have to worry about the new married monogram issue!

I love your STDs! Have you thought about using Yellow for the label on the outside? I like the subtle pop of color the ribbon does for the inside and it might be nice as well on the outside

I’m sure this has come up before, but the acronym for Save-the-Date still cracks me up. I know; I’m five.

Ha, I understand making STDs waaaay before they are due! I got the inspiration from mine back in the summer and had them almost entirely created in InDesign then. This week we are finally ordering them :)

Did you cut the paper to size or did they sell it like that? I’m making some of my own invitations, too, but i can’t cut a straight line and would like paper already cut to size.
