Hands Off

October 15th, 2007 @ 2:19 pm by Mrs. Jasmine

This might be the most ridiculous question ever posted on Wedding Bee, but….

How do you wear gloves and mittens with your engagement ring? The brutal Chicago winter is close at hand and I’m wondering how you wear gloves and mittens without snagging an engagement-ring sized lump. How do you ladies in cold-weather states handle this?

hahahaha! I literally burst out laughing when I read this.

I have to flip my ring to get the gloves on…
I need to get bigger gloves for this winter… the finger holes are a bit snug with the ring on.

I just twirl mine so it is upside down on my hand. Worked well for me all last winter.

i snagged my e-ring on gloves so many times last winter that i took it off so i could have it inspected to make sure the stone wasn’t loose… but i never got around to it. So I’ve only been wearing my wedding band since. i know i’m horrible!!!

turning it upside down didn’t work for the knit gloves i usually wear. hmmm i don’t have a good answer.

ditto the two ladies above - my ring seems to fit between the ring finger and my palm, and it’s definitely easier to get the glove on.

Just be careful you don’t go slapping anything(one) with an open hand - that could hurt! :D

I usually wear gittens (gloves with mitten flaps) because then I do not have to take my gloves off all the time and I decrease the chance of my ring flying off my cold fingers.

Haha! I had to conquer this same dilemma last winter! The only gloves that worked getting them over my engagment ring were the leather ones (similar to yours pictures) but with the traditional mitten style (you know a thumb and then a big pouch for the rest of your fingers!). I got them a size bigger than usual so I was sure not to snag the setting.

it’s not a stupid question at all. i like fallon’s idea of the mittens! sometimes i’d just use the pockets of my coat instead of gloves. so bad! it would be easier just to wear my wedding band like mrs. bee but that’s not a great solution either. i wish i had a better idea!

ahaha I actually have to turn my diamond to the side, wedged between my two fingers and then pu the glove on.

They should make gloves that have a little hole for the ring! =) How ingenious would that me?! That way you could keep your hands warm and show off the bling! Totally kidding…my ring’s not that high up on prongs, so I actually haven’t noticed much of a difference when wearing gloves. Sorry, not much help, but the thought of a hole int he glove is amusing to me!

i had the same problem last winter (chicago native too!) and i ended up getiing isotoner gloves. they are smooth and don’t have a wool lining that gets caught in your ring and it’s stretchy enoughy that it just stretches over it.

Hi, I am also a midwest native (Iowa.) I ended up buying the smallest pair of MEN’s gloves I could find. The fingers are a little wider, and allowed some wiggle room for my ring.

My college roommate (she’s brilliant) did something similar to the hole-for-the-ring strategy. She took a pair of knit gloves, cut off the ring finger, and put two little hook and eye closures on the finger and glove. She’d put on the glove, then she’d “put on her finger”. It worked, but it always made me giggle.

I think this year, I won’t wear my engagement ring with gloves. Last year, I lost two tiny diamonds after they snagged on the cashmere… (well, after I used the sonic cleaner too, which probably loosened up the stones).

I think this was a great question! I have problems with my gloves AND pockets in my pants. =P

I just make sure that my gloves aren’t knit gloves. I’ve never had problems with my fleece-lined ones. Then again, I have small hands so my gloves never fit ultra-tightly anyway.

GK - Yes! The pockets in the pants dilemma! Argh, it drives me bananas on a daily basis. I can’t stand that I have to put up with that for the rest of my life. GRRRRRR @ jeans pockets.

I don’t really have a solution for the gloves other than to take the ring off and carry it in its ring box in your purse till you take your gloves off. Gloves go in purse, ring goes back on finger. That’s what I had to do last year anyway. It’s too cold here to just not wear gloves.

I had the same question too after a day of mountain biking…I wear bike gloves for my ride, and luckily enough…the gloves fit over my ring (solitaire diamond that sits high); however, there was a small bump, and from gripping tightly on my handle bars, i ended up with a red ring indentation at the base of my finger. the gloves pushed my ring as low as it could go. it disappeared after a day, but was there another way??

snowboarding season is coming up…what to do??

I got a very low mount with a bezel set for this exact reason. I bike and ski a lot, and don’t want to worry about the ring. I also dance a lot and hear guys talk all the time about how they hate being scratched by erings.

I love this post! We got engaged Jan 06 so I immediately had to figure this one out.

I turn my stones in towards my palm and sort of curl my fingers into my palm just slightly so I don’t catch on my knit gloves.

This year I think I’ll invest in leather gloves… sounds much easier than my method!

I only wear mittens! Love them and I’ve had no problems wearing it with my ering.

I just mush my ring off to the side so its not sticking straight up and voila. I was proposed to in literally 13 degree, gale-force wind weather and after the “Yay I’m engaged!” thought came the “How do I wear gloves?” thought. I completely sympathize!

This made me laugh. We got engaged on a snowboarding trip - so I had the gloves on right away. I never really noticed an issue - my stones are pretty protected with my setting. Purposely because I’m always playing sports so I wanted something indestructible.

I guess we weren’t all that successful though. The first day back to work after the honeymoon… (I didn’t take the ring on the honeymoon - so it was my first time wearing it with my band) I’m not even sure what I was doing - I think pushing my hair out of my face when the ring and my earring had a mini battle. I barely felt the snag - but thankfully I looked down at the ring - one of the side stones (part of the main setting, not one of the tiny ones) was sitting beside the ring on my hand!! I about freaked out! We took it back to the jeweler and had it fixed - he also reinforced the one prong. The setting has a semi circle on one side and a prong on the other side. He said there was nothing wrong with the prong - it wasn’t bent at all. Must have just been something freak!

Surprisingly I’m not overly cautious with it (it’s insured :)) - and haven’t had another issue.

you all must be blinging, because i’ve never had the problem before. But maybe because I wear the 99 cent magic gloves from the supermarket… not cutesy tight leather gloves. oh no, those wouldn’t work. I lose gloves too easily.

I guess I have the probem when it comes to my weight lifting gloves though, since they’re pretty stretchy tight, I need to either take off the rings or just live with an uncomfortable lump.

i live in LA, so i don’t wear gloves ever, but i just recently came across this problem when i was playing golf!! there is no way that you could fit any ring into a golf glove, so i take my ring off before i play (and then my hand feels naked…hehe). sorry… slightly off-topic but still glove-related!

My ring isn’t that big… haha. I guess that’s one thing I at least don’t have to worry about!

Just turn it inside and curve the fingers a little…that works well for me.

But as has been mentioned, just be careful about prongs/settings loosening. My mom turned all her rings inside for a football game and after the clapping and what not, she’d lost a few small diamonds from a couple rings!

heh…jp, they actually DO have ladies golf gloves with holes for your rings and fingernails. My thought is that if you need your rings and fingernails to show through your golf glove, maybe you should just stay at the 19th hole :)

For the winter glove thing, I haven’t figured it out either and I live in Boston…but the turning it to the side thing is what I am going to try first.

My FH bought me a nice chain that I wear and put my ring on in situations like that. I turns out I don’t have cold weather to deal with but I am a veterinary student and there are lots of pretty gross things I’d rather not get my ring in or nitrile gloves that rip with it. It works well for me.

Mine isn’t a high mount. I wear leather gloves, and they stretched out to fit it just fine.

Great post. I also twist it around so the stone is on my palm side where there is more space. At first I had no clue too!
