The Wonders Of Palladium

October 16th, 2007 @ 10:27 am by Ms. Dahlia

My engagement ring looks like it is platinum, but it is not. It is palladium.

Palladium is posing to be the next biggest thing in jewelry. It is whiter than platinum, making it perfect for those looking for white-silver colored jewelry. It is lighter than platinum, which is perfect for those who don’t like the weight of platinum rings, as well as for other types of jewelry, such as earrings, that can’t feasibly be made of platinum because of the weight. It is stronger than platinum, which is definitely a good thing when it comes to rings not bending. It is 95% pure, like platinum rings are.  And it is readily available by this mine that engages in safe, legal, ethical mining practices.

One more benefit? It is cheaper than platinum. Much cheaper. It is currently priced at not much more than white gold. And unlike white gold, it is hypoallergenic and never needs to be plated because its natural color is white.

This article does a good job of explaining many of the benefits.

Look at these rings:

Of what is your engagement ring or wedding ring made?

Mine is yellow gold.. there doesn’t seem to be be too many women anymore that choose yellow gold, but I like it.. I think it’s classic.

My husband’s ring is Tungsten.

18K yellow gold! i just like the warmth of the color. it scratches, but i like the way my mom’s wedding ring looks after almost 35 years of wear, so i’m confident i’ll like mine too. and the fact that it’s cheaper thank platinum was definitely a factor.

Yay for yellow gold ring gals! It’s so true loveletter! We had the hardest time trying to find yellow gold semi-mounts let alone matching bands! We decided on a 18k gold with platinum mounting.

I think it is awesome that some of you have yellow gold rings! As you probably figured, I prefer the white metal look myself, but loveletter, I completely agree with you- there is something very classic and elegant looking about yellow gold.

I commented on your other engagement ring post - mine is also palladium, for all the reasons you mentioned above. I knew I wanted a white metal, couldn’t afford platinum and didn’t want to have to worry about the color wearing off like white gold. I read about palladium on a website, and luckily the place where we got ours made did a lot of palladium jewelry - I love it!

Both my e-ring and wedding band are platinum. FI’s wedding band is a combination of titanium and white gold.

My engagement band is white gold. My wedding band is palladium. I clean my ring so often that I wear the plating off, so we will get the engagement ring reset after some of the wedding expenses calm down.

My e-ring is platinum, as both our wedding bands will be. Pricey, but totally worth it IMO in comparison to gold. I would have been fine with white gold, but my fiance wanted platinum for our rings (he’s kind of a snob!).

My e-ring and both of our wedding bands are white gold. If I had known about palladium, I would’ve looked into that a little more. I especially love those tension mounts on your jeweler’s website, Miss Dahlia. Maybe for a 10th anniversary present!

My rings are platinum; we’re still looking for FI’s ring and he is leaning toward titanium.

I will never understand where people got the idea that white gold discolors. I’m wearing my mother’s 1960 white gold wedding set, and it’s exactly the same color as my husband’s 2006 white gold band.

mine is white gold with a light blue sapphire
hubby’s is tungsten carbide, which is he so proud of–it’s the toughest metal that’s used for jewelry, I believe. Someone told him he could use it to open beer bottles. Yes, yes you can, and it won’t scratch. trying to convince him that’s NOT a cool thing to show your buddies…

My engagement ring and wedding ring were purchased as a set, and they are both platinum. It is a vintage ring and I absolutely LOVE it.

The platinum allowed the ring to be really thin, it’s not heavy at all.

We’re going shopping for my fiance’s ring this weekend hopefully. We’re going to the same place he got mine, so who knows what we’ll find.

My husband and I got the same rings. They are brushed stainless steel with a lining of red gold. We got them here: svstudio.com. I love them!

Sarah- you raise a good point. White gold, if rhodium plated (to make it whiter), will eventually discolor as the rhodium plating wears off and the true color of white gold comes through. I believe that if it isn’t rhodium plated in the first place, then it won’t discolor.

My husband’s ring is white gold which has already needed to be replated because he’s hard on rings. (Gojo with pumice, the actual ring color under the rhodium is more yellow) My ring is platinum. I chose platinum because I have a mild allergy to nickel. Until we went to Montana this summer for the internship, I didn’t know much about palladium. Thanx for this post Miss Dahlia. I’ve been down in the Stillwater Mine and hiked in the mountains around it. There’s a population of Big Horn sheep on the mine property. The buildings are all painted a neutral color to blend into the surroundings and the employees take a bus from town to relieve the impact of travel to work. I know you said the mine was safe, ethical, and legal, but I feel very strongly about it. I’m really fortunate to have had the experiences I’ve had with mining. And I feel confident that my husband will be safe when he goes to work at the next mine. And he’ll be working to mine gold there. :-)
