An Engagement Ring For Him?

October 17th, 2007 @ 1:09 pm by Ms. Dahlia

Although the ring on Mr. Dahlia’s left ring finger appears to be a wedding band, it is in fact an engagement ring.

When it was evident to both of us that we would be getting engaged, I asked Mr. Dahlia what it was that he wanted for our engagement. I didn’t feel that it was fair that I get a ring, and he gets, well nothing beyond the joy of knowing that we’re getting married. Guess what his response was?

Yes, he wanted a Wii. I told him that was not exactly what I was thinking, and that I wasn’t planning to buy him something that would be obsolete in a couple of years. I was thinking something that would last, maybe along the lines of a watch. Mr. Dahlia surprised me a bit, and said that he wanted a ring as well.

So on my last day in town before Christmas last year, I dragged Mr. Dahlia to the jewelry store - the same store where we got my original ring - and said that he had to pick one. Today. For a bit of background, he had looked at rings several times, and had been wavering for several weeks about which one he wanted.

This is what he picked:

Corinthian by ArtCarved.

Like my ring, it is made in Palladium.

Mr. Dahlia really likes wearing a ring. I’ve been asking him lately about whether he wants another ring as a wedding ring, or whether he wants to use the same ring. He hasn’t figured that out yet.

Did you get your fiance something for your engagement? If he has a ring, will he use that as his wedding ring, or is he getting a separate wedding ring?

I got my man an engagement ring too! We have already bought our wedding bands as well. Not sure what he will do with his engagement ring.

He wanted an engagement kegerator…and I got it for him…haha, now what does that say about our relationship?!?! Tiffany’s has some wonderful titanium rings, and I got one of those for him, but the darn thing sits in a ring box and the kegerator gets used like daily! Ehh, whatever works for him.

This is cool…I was just talking about this with my guy last night. I’m still reading this book, All Dressed in White and I’m at this part where they discuss how/when the wedding industry began and really got it’s foothold.

At some point, the jewellers (I want to say the 50s, but don’t quote me) tried a brief marketing stint on marketing e-rings for guys. It was all under the guise of “it’s always been done this way” but it never really took off.

I bought him a Polar heart rate monitor watch shortly after the engagement. He does have a ring now but it is a practice ring I got him when he couldn’t decide what width of wedding band he wanted.

He didn’t want an engagement ring. So I bought him a fancy, schmancy briefcase.

My husband had an engagement band - he loved it! He says he loved that when he would take the el to work he didn’t have to worry that if he talked to someone that they would think he was hitting on them and he didn’t have to say right out, “well, I’m engaged…”. He didn’t know if he wanted a wedding ring too but in the end we got one - so he has his “fancy” one and an everyday one. And he loves them both. People were a little confused but as soon as we explained I can’t remember a single bad reaction - more like a lot of “I wish I had done that” or “I want one!”

I bought my husband an engagement ring once I knew he was going to propose. It was too big, and so he wore it on his middle finger during engagement. He had it resized and now uses it as a wedding band. He says it means a lot to him because he doesn’t know any other guys who had engagement rings and I had to sneak out across the country to go to AZ where I first saw it in order to buy it. The story is what he’s into!

We have matching engagement bands. FI really wanted a ring too. And I think he wants a new ring as wedding band too. I don’t know what he’ll do with his engagement ring after the wedding.

My fiance wanted a “practice” ring to spend the year getting ready to wear the “real” ring, so we bought an inexpensive plain silver band from one of the jewelry shops (I think in the Haight-Ashbury area) for $10 or $15 — He didn’t want a fancy engagement ring, but wanted some time to get used to the idea before having to be responsible for one. It made wearing a wedding ring and figuring out a routine much more comfortable for him — It was really sweet!

I had the idea of an engagement gift in mind after we saw a friend’s enormous, fabulous “engagement TV.” But a gift seemed like an unnecessary expense — if anything, I would have gotten him the more traditional wedding present.

Then a great deal for a week in Paris came along, and I just jumped. He spent so much time, effort, and money creating the ring that I really wanted to do something romantic for him in return. We’re headed out in late Nov, and he doesn’t know the destination yet — it’s even more fun as a surprise!

I want to get the other half an engagement ring. Right now he’s resisting because he doesn’t like the feel of rings in general. If I don’t convince him, then I’ll give him an engagement watch.

Okay, at the risk of demonstrating to all of you just how *extremely* dorky I can be and having you mock me……I gave my boy a funded Roth IRA (retirement) account as part of his engagement gift. (If it helps redeem myself, he also got baseball game tickets.)

Now let me explain. A few years into our relationship, we both pretty much knew that getting hitched was inevitable. We openly discussed it with each other but felt there was no rush since we were fairly young and busy with our careers. So, I had a lot of time to plan :) . I wanted to give him a gift that was both (i) fun and something he could enjoy now; and (ii) something that had some staying power that he could still appreciate later on in life (kind of like an engagement ring, right?)
For the first/fun gift, he got Sunday-plan Mets tickets (tickets to all Sunday Mets home games for the season). Though I admit I benefit from these as well, since he’s turned me into a huge Mets fan. The Roth helped fulfill the second/long-term gift. He knew I opened a Roth for him (had to get his signature and SS#), but I just played it off as, “I’m opening this account for you so that whenever you have extra $ to stash away you have somewhere to put it”. This didn’t seem all that strange to him because I’m all about saving and I had always bugged him about not contributing enough to his 401k (plus I had him sign when he was engrossed in some TV show). What he *didn’t* know was that I was contributing a little $ each week for nearly two years (I got the statements sent to me)!! So shortly after he proposed, I gave him a copy of his Roth statement and he was totally surprised…he had nearly forgotten he even had an account!!

Was it pretty dorky? Absolutely. BUT, he loved it because it boosted his savings (which probably took a hit after he got my ring :) ), and he had something he could enjoy both now and later.

It is so great to hear what you all have given to your fiance! Trinjay, I don’t think your gift is dorky at all- I honestly think it is a brilliant idea.

My husband also wanted an engagement ring. I found him a cool sterling silver one that even has a subtle “diamond” pattern on it. He now wears it with his white gold wedding band and they look cool together and totally unique.

We actually had two weddings (one legal in the US and one sentimental Italy), so we had our engagement rings engraved with the first date and our initials and used them for the US wedding and then had wedding rings made for the Italian wedding with a phrase in Italian that means something to us and the Italian wedding date.

We hadn’t planned two weddings when we got engaged, so the fact that he had an engagement ring really came in handy!

Here in Brazil it is traditional that both (guy and the girl) wear an engagement ring, the same that will be used during the whole marriage. I always wanted to get a cute diamond ring, like the ones you wear in the U.S. as an engagement ring (here most engagement rings are yellow gold and they have to be matching rings for the guy and the girl…), so my guy gave me one when he proposed and after that we went and picked “our” engagement ring together (and yes, I have two of them!!) =)

I must say that the Wii is fantastic. I bought my girlfriend one for her birthday. I am soo not a gamer but this one is great. I even had a Wii birthday party this past weekend. We had a Dance Dance Revolution tournament. Pretty funny, I must admit.

I did the same as Ms Daffodill…he picked out a ring that he loved and I gave it to him when he finally popped the question.

He wears it on his right hand and will dramatically change fingers when we are legally married.

I’m getting mine an engagement timepiece! I had a jeweler tell me that this was becoming more common (most likely to make a sale but it worked!) so I don’t know if that is true or not. I agree that he deserves something equally as nice so tag heuer it is!

I got my fiance a Wii for an engagement present. I figure it was something that he would show off to his friends and stare at adoringly on a daily occassion (okay, maybe not in the same way I stare at my ring). He certainly appreciates it.
