An Engagement Ring For Him?

October 17th, 2007 @ 1:09 pm by Ms. Dahlia

Although the ring on Mr. Dahlia’s left ring finger appears to be a wedding band, it is in fact an engagement ring.

When it was evident to both of us that we would be getting engaged, I asked Mr. Dahlia what it was that he wanted for our engagement. I didn’t feel that it was fair that I get a ring, and he gets, well nothing beyond the joy of knowing that we’re getting married. Guess what his response was?

Yes, he wanted a Wii. I told him that was not exactly what I was thinking, and that I wasn’t planning to buy him something that would be obsolete in a couple of years. I was thinking something that would last, maybe along the lines of a watch. Mr. Dahlia surprised me a bit, and said that he wanted a ring as well.

So on my last day in town before Christmas last year, I dragged Mr. Dahlia to the jewelry store - the same store where we got my original ring - and said that he had to pick one. Today. For a bit of background, he had looked at rings several times, and had been wavering for several weeks about which one he wanted.

This is what he picked:

Like my ring, it is made in Palladium.

Mr. Dahlia really likes wearing a ring. I’ve been asking him lately about whether he wants another ring as a wedding ring, or whether he wants to use the same ring. He hasn’t figured that out yet.

Did you get your fiance something for your engagement? If he has a ring, will he use that as his wedding ring, or is he getting a separate wedding ring?

I got my man an engagement ring too! We have already bought our wedding bands as well. Not sure what he will do with his engagement ring.

He wanted an engagement kegerator…and I got it for him…haha, now what does that say about our relationship?!?! Tiffany’s has some wonderful titanium rings, and I got one of those for him, but the darn thing sits in a ring box and the kegerator gets used like daily! Ehh, whatever works for him.

This is cool…I was just talking about this with my guy last night. I’m still reading this book, All Dressed in White and I’m at this part where they discuss how/when the wedding industry began and really got it’s foothold.

At some point, the jewellers (I want to say the 50s, but don’t quote me) tried a brief marketing stint on marketing e-rings for guys. It was all under the guise of “it’s always been done this way” but it never really took off.

I bought him a Polar heart rate monitor watch shortly after the engagement. He does have a ring now but it is a practice ring I got him when he couldn’t decide what width of wedding band he wanted.

He didn’t want an engagement ring. So I bought him a fancy, schmancy briefcase.

My husband had an engagement band - he loved it! He says he loved that when he would take the el to work he didn’t have to worry that if he talked to someone that they would think he was hitting on them and he didn’t have to say right out, “well, I’m engaged…”. He didn’t know if he wanted a wedding ring too but in the end we got one - so he has his “fancy” one and an everyday one. And he loves them both. People were a little confused but as soon as we explained I can’t remember a single bad reaction - more like a lot of “I wish I had done that” or “I want one!”

I bought my husband an engagement ring once I knew he was going to propose. It was too big, and so he wore it on his middle finger during engagement. He had it resized and now uses it as a wedding band. He says it means a lot to him because he doesn’t know any other guys who had engagement rings and I had to sneak out across the country to go to AZ where I first saw it in order to buy it. The story is what he’s into!

We have matching engagement bands. FI really wanted a ring too. And I think he wants a new ring as wedding band too. I don’t know what he’ll do with his engagement ring after the wedding.

My fiance wanted a “practice” ring to spend the year getting ready to wear the “real” ring, so we bought an inexpensive plain silver band from one of the jewelry shops (I think in the Haight-Ashbury area) for $10 or $15 — He didn’t want a fancy engagement ring, but wanted some time to get used to the idea before having to be responsible for one. It made wearing a wedding ring and figuring out a routine much more comfortable for him — It was really sweet!

I had the idea of an engagement gift in mind after we saw a friend’s enormous, fabulous “engagement TV.” But a gift seemed like an unnecessary expense — if anything, I would have gotten him the more traditional wedding present.

Then a great deal for a week in Paris came along, and I just jumped. He spent so much time, effort, and money creating the ring that I really wanted to do something romantic for him in return. We’re headed out in late Nov, and he doesn’t know the destination yet — it’s even more fun as a surprise!

I want to get the other half an engagement ring. Right now he’s resisting because he doesn’t like the feel of rings in general. If I don’t convince him, then I’ll give him an engagement watch.
