“Preventative” Measures

October 17th, 2007 @ 2:55 pm by Mrs. Cherry Blossom

I just got over this nasty stomach flu bug that travelled around the office, hence the lack of posts. The worst part is, I caught it then spread it to Mr. CB - he came over to take care of me and inadvertently caught the nasty bug. I wanted to return the favor by caring for him, but because he knows how weak I am, he didn’t want me to take care of him and get sick again. How sweet… this got me thinking….

This time last year, I attended a wedding. If no one had told me, I wouldn’t have known the bride was fighting off a terrible cold that left her with a stuffy and runny nose, headache, and loss of voice while she was still up at 3 am the night before her wedding finishing last minute details. She looked radiant, beautiful and all smiles… mostly running on the adrenaline rush of her wedding.

Now, with another gf’s wedding next week, there is a bachelor party for the groom this weekend and a rehearsal this Sunday. I’ve suggested to Mr. CB that he not partake in the activities as to avoid transferring the horrible bug to the groom-to-be or anyone else for that matter. With the nasty, unpredictable, extremely cold then hot weather, everyone is falling victim to the arrival of flu season.

And what about allergies? I have mild allergies and one of my BMs has pretty sensitive allergies. We’re making sure to take allergy medicine before our ceremony which is under a tree. It shouldn’t last too long but still …

I know we can’t over stress about every last thing that might happen on the wedding day, what with stress being one of the reasons someone might fall ill. We might be able to dodge the rain for the day but what about sickness? I suggested my gf start taking Airborne from now until the wedding - can never be too safe, right? Some people have gotten their flu shots; that’s not fool proof but better than nothing. How about vitamins - would that help?

How are you taking “preventative” measures to avoid sickness?

Airborne is actually dangerous if you take the max they suggest. You’ll overdose on some of the vitamins in there.

I wash my hands frequently. I also got my flu shot on Monday.

Echinacea is a natural health product that boosts the immune system. It’s proven to help prevent colds/flus if you take it during times of stress or at the onset of symptoms.

I’m just trying to make sure EVERYTHING is done with 7 days to spare before the wedding so I can relax and enjoy it. (10 days to go and I think I’m pretty much there) Only things other than going to the rehearsal is my spa night. Waiting to the last minute just adds to the much unneeded stress.

FI and I have been taking Cold-FX for the past month to strengthen our immune system. So far so good….only 10 days remaining!

For some reason, I find I don’t usually get sick when I’m stressed and overworked…the sickness comes AFTER I complete all the stress-y stuff and relax. Usually this happens when I work super hard so I can go on a two-week vacation, and then on vacation, I’m sick as a dog. It sucks! Handwashing is s’posed to be a real help; keep your hands away from your eyes, nose & mouth — I was shocked to realize how often I rub my eyes when I started making a big effort NOT to do it. Another thing I heard is that you shouldn’t eat lunch at your desk (which I’ve never heeded, even after hearing about this) — because it’s absolutely crawling with germs. Ew.

Oh, and Truth is totally right — be careful w/ that Airborne stuff. My aunt OD’d on it and had some serious kidney issue or something as a result. Yikes! I can’t stand the taste, personally.

My wedding is in two weeks this Saturday and it’s too late. I caught a cold and so did my Fiance and 5 year old daughter. I’m hoping that we’ll all be better come November 3rd. So in the meantime, I’m taking cold medicine and zinc lozenges, and drinking airborne. I know it’s too late for the airborne but I’m hoping that the vitamins will help fight the cold.

I’ve been taking emergen-c every day. It’s not a hard thing to do, so I figure I may as well try.

i was so sick the night and morning before my wedding. I literally was throwing up all night and all the way to my hair/makeup appointment the morning of. I was panicking, thinking that I would have to walk down the aisle with a paper bag in my hand! Fortunately, the adrenaline kicked in and I made it through the day alright (though I started to fade again during the photos following the ceremony…. and my husband told me that when I was walking down the aisle, he thought he was going to have to come and rescue me because I looked like I was about to pass out or something! Fortunately, you can’t tell anything was amiss in the pictures!).

The day after the wedding, all hell broke loose and I got MAJORLY ill. I was so glad that my husband and I had decided to postpone our honeymoon, because it would have been such a shame to have wasted the time and money when all I’d have done was lie in bed sleeping all week….

It was probably partially due to anxiety (at least the illness before the wedding), but I think my body was fighting something and held on as much as it could until after the big event…. either that, or adrenaline and sheer willpower has more control over your body than I ever thought ;)

princesskittyHI, I had the same problem. I used to put on events and meetings for our department and get all stressed out that the day after I’d get sick. Thank goodness I did enough of them that I figured out how not to stress. And it turns out that the honeymoon was a great antidote.

I worked at camps all one summer, and what worked best for me was vitamin C drops. You have to watch the amount you’re taking in, though.

HACB says:

Miss Kiwi - I love Emergen-C!!! I discovered it a month before my wedding (ironically, the weekend of my bachelorette party - it certainly helped my recovery!)

Anyway, my husband and I had one every morning for the few weeks before the wedding - the psychological effects alone are worth it. I’ve convinced myself I’m not going to get sick as long as I take it regularly. ;)

Oh my gosh, I just got over the stomach flu too! It’s so terrible! =(

nashgirl-I commend you. =) I don’t know if I would have been able to do ANY of that if I were that sick.

Can I just say I had visions of a pirate themed wedding with an eye patch. My eyeball had a large bubble on it just days before the wedding…making it swollen and gross looking. And really uncomfortable. I immediately made an appointment with an eye doctor and it actually went down a lot on it’s own. The doctor said it was likely an allergic reaction and with the eye drops he gave me my eyes were absolutely fine in time for the rehearsal. But I certainly feel for anyone who is sick on their wedding.

Angie says:

While I cannot give any preventive help as I failed -miserably- at keeping myself healthy on my own wedding, I do recommend having Afrin on your emergency kit.

I caught a bad cold two days before the wedding (two weeks ago) and was dragging myself through the days, luckily the best man was there to save the day (including rehearsal dinner) by getting me some Afrin.

I used it 5 mins before the rehearsal and an hour before the wedding and I was able to go through the ceremony and reception without pain. The only thing that gave me away was my voice.

The only problem is that you have to use it only when you really need it as you only use it for 3 days maximum (which was fine with me, to me less is better)

Now, if you gals do get sick (I hope none of you do) don’t forget to pack the following on the honeymoon luggage

night cold medicine
day cold medicine
claritin (helped a lot too)
afrin
pain medication (motrin was my choice)

trust me…it helps!

Angie says:

BTW in no way do I recommend the specified brands…it just happens to be what I used :-D (I didn’t even know about afrin until the day I used it btw).
Keep healthy everyone!
