The Getaway

October 17th, 2007 @ 5:24 pm by Mrs. Canary

Mr. C and I want a classic NYC getaway car for ourselves.

Here’s my dreamboat… a classic New York checker cab!

The only company in New York that seems to have these is Film Cars. The staff here is fantastic, but unfortunately because of some disagreement with the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission, they’re unable to drive the cab around with passengers in it. But, they can rent it out on an hourly basis as a prop. I know it’s not the same as riding around in it, but it’d be fabulous for pictures! The hourly rate is pretty reasonable as well.

A new New York tradition, the pedicab, would be another awesome getaway option. Alas, it is hard to find vendors for this. If you know of any in New York, please send them along!

Check out this awesome Kate Spade designed cover on the pedicab!

Mr. C and I may end up getting around by subway. That’s not so bad… it’ll definitely be classic New York. Other creative getaway ideas:

A Vespa! Super European. But I think we’d get run over in New York.

A vintage VW Bus. I think this would be cute and borderline hysterical.

The eco-friendly option, just bike it! You can even do it tandem.

Are you planning on doing something special for a getaway vehicle?

Ahh, I love all of these! The vespa would be so awesome.

Mr. Jasmine and I are staying in the hotel the wedding will be held at, so we have no “getaway”. If we did, I would push for an elephant! :)

Ohmygosh - LOVE the vintage VW bus! And they don’t even look like hippies! I think we’ll be walking distance from our hotel, so honestly I’d kind of like to stroll out hand in hand on our own two feet - although a horse and carriage might be fun too!

We used a Prius (after my dress was bustled, it was not a problem at all for me to fit in the back). It matched with our compact fluorescent lightbulb favors.

Saturday morning I am dropping my car off at my in-laws house and will have my sister drive us to the venue. When FH and I leave the reception he will drive us off in his grandfather’s emerald green Mustang convertible. Then we’ll drive to the in-laws and leave the Mustang there while we proceed to drive my car to the hotel we’re staying at (about 150 miles so we can get a head start on the drive down to where our cruise leaves from.) We drove the Mustang two days ago in the local homecoming parade, so we have plenty of practice with it for this weekend!

Haha, Miss Jasmine, an elephant would be so awesome!

Miss Canary, like ChicagoSarah mentioned, a horse carriage would be a pretty New York-trademark too, wouldn’t it? Not sure if it’s pricey though…

You can’t just find a random pedicab driver and ask if he/she would work out something special for your wedding? I was always under the assumption that they work independently and I’m sure they’re always down to make a lil more money…I could be wrong though.

As it’s a London (England) wedding, we’ll be using a vintage 20s London taxi - best thing about them - they’re licensed, so can use the taxi/bus only lanes!

red tandem bicycle! my fiance’s parents actually own a vintage one so how could we not.

not terribly unique but hopefully fun. We are using 3 trolleys to transport our guests to and from the ceremony (there is little to no parking by our church). So we will be joining one of the groups on the way back on the trolley which should be good fun and make for some cute pictures. :)

My dad restores old pickup trucks… so we are driving away in a 1949 burgundy pickup… The bonus is that it matches our wedding colors. I plan on putting a Just Married sign on the back maybe with some tin cans on strings…but I’m not sure if that’s legal to have things like tin cans dragging behind the vehicle.

We’ve hired the local trolley (see http://206.248.244.7/trolley.htm ) to take the bridal party from the church to the reception site. Saturday morning before the wedding, the groom and his men will move bridal party cars to the reception site so that everyone can leave from there.

As for the real getaway, we’ll be leaving in my fiance’s grandmother’s recently, fully restored cherry red 1950s Mercedes convertible. She just got it back last week and we saw it this week and it is fabulous! We’re thrilled! :)

All fantastic ideas! I love the pickup and vintage convertible!

Miss Jasmine, I’d love to see you on an elephant!

Mr. C and I considered the horse and carriage, but it seems like so much work! Plus, I always think of that “smell” whenever I see a horse and carriage.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Congratulations on your wedding plans! FYI, it’s not a disagreement with the Taxi and Limousine Commission, but rather the laws requiring that only vehicles that are properly licensed, inspected three times per year by the TLC, insured at appropriately higher levels, and driven by a professionally licensed, drug tested and background checked professional driver may operate a vehicle for-hire. As wonderful as Film Cars’ Checkers are for media projects, they do not meet this criteria. These laws are structly enforced by us to protect the public. Once again, congratulations…..I’m a Vespa fan myself!

I went to a wedding a week ago where the groom was a firefighter, so they left in a fire truck. It was extremely cool since they got to have the sirens and whistles blaring. Made for some beautiful pictures too!
