About Mrs. Hummingbird

PDIY?

October 18th, 2007 @ 4:28 pm by Mrs. Hummingbird

When we were first starting to plan the wedding, I had incredibly lofty goals when it came to the number of wedding projects I was going to do. I was going to do all of the flowers. I was going to make all the favours. I was going to be a regular ass-kicking DIYer. After all, it would make everything that much more special (not to mention it would allow me to purchase an obscene amount of paper from the luxury paper store I drooled over. smiley401)

However, once I started actually planning out these projects, I realized:

1) I was not particularly crafty/artistic,
2) I was not rich enough to afford half the stuff I would have to buy,
3) I was not able to spend 24 hours a day, 7 days a week doing crafty things because I had a job and I needed sleep.

So, when it comes to my craftiness, I’ve scaled down a little. While there are some things I plan on doing myself (I have an awesome favour idea I will hopefully soon write about) and some things I plan on doing with Mr. Hummingbird (he is much artier than me and will be helping construct centerpieces), there are some things that were just a bit too frilly and had to be downsized if I was going to be able to keep my bank balance in check and have a life outside of the wedding from now until June.

Therefore, although I did a massive blog about STDs and had recently been thinking about making my own, they ended up being the first thing to go from the DIY list. However, I still wanted to make sure they had some sort of personal feeling to them, so over this weekend, Mr. Hummingbird and I went out and bought a bunch of impressionist stationery sets and, with the aid of a special Save the Date stamp and a really nice ink pen, I am sending each one of my guests a little handwritten letter and STD, checking in and seeing how they are, as well as inviting them to be part of our special day.

It’s not the huge project I had originally envisioned, but I feel like, even though I’m cutting down on the amount of work I have to do by not personally constructing the cards, I’m still partially doing it myself and adding my own touch to it.

What about you ladies? Who else is going the PDIY route on some of their projects?

I remember going through that too…saying I was going to do all these cool things, but in the end time and sanity won out.

Partial DIY is a great way to add touches to professional work. We I’m not sure this qualifies, we had a local caricature artist draw up our picture with our wedding date and the words “Save this Date” underneath. We took them to a local printer and had post cards made out of them. Not a whole lot of work on our part (except for the fact that the printer didn’t want to do it because his logo was on the dang paper), but not exactly right out a store either.

I’m a big fan of partial. It’s a great way to find a compromise but still retain some individuality.

Is DIY really cheaper? I have this impression that it is going to cost me less, but the more i get into it, the less i think this is the case!

I think in some cases it is. But it helps to know what you want and then look for those bargains. I ended up spening $200.00 on my DIY invitations because I couldn’t make up my mind. Turns out that I could have spent the same amount of money to have someone else stress about it.

Our save the dates however were pretty cheap: donation to the Hurricane Katrina fund and printing costs. Stamps were also cheaper for the post cards (even if they did take longer to get where they were going).

So again, it just depends.

There’s been stuff on weddingbee where people get, for example, vistaprint postcards for STDs, and just by busting out the corner rounder, take away the mass-produced look. That’s the goal for most of us, I think: it doesn’t have to look super-crafty I-made-this-myself, it just needs NOT to look like we called 1-800-generic-weddings.
