Cupcake Cake Details

October 19th, 2007 @ 2:02 pm by Mrs. Monkey

Mr. Monkey & I knew long before we planned anything wedding-related that we wanted cupcakes at the wedding. Since we were anticipating 400+ guests, we knew that we’d be on a bit of budget. It also seemed like it would be a whole lot easier to distribute cupcakes to 400 hungry people than to slice up a lot of wedding sheet cake.

We did some research on cupcake places in the city (Magnolia, Tribeca Treats, etc.) and even with the lowest possible price (a buck fifty for a plain cupcake), it was still way out of our budget. Sooo…we decided to go local.

Mr. Monkey & I have been buying cupcakes from our local Super Stop & Shop for years and although they’re supermarket brand, they were always tasty. I inquired about prices and found out that by buying them in bulk, they’d cost less than $0.50 each! In total, we spent less than $300 on all our cupcakes.

Now the only problem was how to dress them up. Mr. Monkey & I are both lucky enough to have a great friend (who happens to be an awesome chef!) from college who generously offered to decorate our cupcakes for us. *Thanks Christine!* We gave her our color scheme and left the rest to her….

Here was the final result!

Here’s us (again) enjoying our first cake together as Mr. & Mrs…

We loved the cupcakes…and they were tasty-delicious. Just goes to show that you don’t need to spend an arm & a leg for a nice cake!

P.S. I forgot to add that I bought the cupcake stand (~$50) from New York Cake Supplies (www.nycake.com). They have lots of cool stuff but were a little on the mean side.

The cupcakes look yummy…did you have any leftovers? And if you did, what did you end up doing with them.

hi bettina,
i’d say it’s okay to order from them…but just be prepared to be tough. i read some of their reviews and was also warned from a friend beforehand so i wasn’t phased when they weren’t friendly. in the end, i got what i needed, so it was okay. definitely not bad enough to avoid ordering from them.

What a great deal, Mrs Monkey! :-)

Please don’t take this as criticism, but I worry about that last statement in your post. I made a similar comment about one of my vendors and she threatened to sue (nothing ever came of it though, luckily!). I wouldn’t want the same thing to happen to you…so even though the comment’s honest, you might want to think about asking Mrs Bee to take it out.

Hope that didn’t offend! :-) (I’m not always the best at making things I say come across in a good way, even though I always mean it that way)

GORGEOUS Cupcakes, and what a brilliant idea to buy them in bulk. I’ve been to NY Cake. It’s a great place because they literally have everything. They’ve never been rude to me in person, but I can see how they may get a little overwhelmed sometimes. The place is always packed, with very little room to move around. (I get cranky when I’m in there ; )

Aaarrgh, Mrs. Bluebell, I vote that we not kowtow to these ridiculous (and mean) vendors.

Since when should we be intimidated about telling the TRUTH about vendors online? That’s what this site is all about.

Bloggers, if anyone threatens to sue you for telling the TRUTH, you should (a) immediately post their threatening letter on the site so that the whole world can know what truly evil people they are for trying to suppress your opinion, and (b) send a letter back threatening to sue them for complaining about conduct that lawfully falls within your free speech rights (in California this is called an anti-SLAPP suit; there’s a similar law in many other states), which would entitle you to damages.

THAT should shut them up. Honestly, the nerve of some people.

Mrs. Monkey,
How many cupcakes did your tower hold? Did you have the extras on the side or in the kitchen or something? I want to do this too, but could never figure out how to logically display 200 cupcakes!

Thanks!

Cupcakes are the fashionable alternative to wedding cakes. And they’re not just for the children on your guest list.”People say they don’t eat desserts, but they inhale cupcake Supplies,” says Joyce Maynor of Fantasy Frostings in Whittier, Calif.
