The Search Is Over…

October 19th, 2007 @ 12:29 pm by Ms. Dahlia

I spent a grand total of two days trying on dresses. I went to four stores, including the Filene’s basement extravaganza. The first three I have already blogged about here.

After shopping for dresses in April, my mom and I waited a grand total of three months before shopping again. Being the busy student that I am, and my mom being the busy seminarian and student pastor that she is, it did not work for us to shop again in July. But that doesn’t mean that I didn’t shop for dresses virtually.

I learned in bridal dress adventure number 1 that I wanted something simple, non foofy-poofy-glittery-cakelike. Mermaid style dresses looked horrid on me. Halters tended not to work quite right, as my considerably large chest would strain the top. Strapless was actually doable, especially when I started lifting weights when summer started. Spaghetti straps- not so much. A dress made of silk was important. Minimal train. Interesting detail on the back.

Which led me to this dress. Jenny Yoo’s Kayla.

Jenny Yoo is a designer mostly for bridesmaid dresses- really expensive bridesmaid dresses. Made of high quality silk shantung, they are extremely well made. And this dress seemed perfect. I even dreamed about it. And two weeks before I try it on, I see it mentioned in a bridal magazine as an ideal dress for bridesmaids with large chests. It must be destiny.

So to try on this dress, my mom and I venture to All Brides Beautiful, located in Hudson, Ohio. It is the only store in Ohio or Michigan to carry Jenny Yoo’s collection.

My experience at this shop could not be more different than Catan’s. Located in an old house, there is one room devoted to wedding dresses, and one room devoted to bridesmaid dresses. And nearly all the wedding dresses were of the non-foofy, non-sparkly variety. The two women helping me were absolutely awesome. The dressing room was a very large room with two comfortable chairs in it, and a three way mirror. Off to the side was a small room with a curtain in which I changed in and out of dresses. The attendant would hand me a dress to try on, and would clip/help zip it if I needed it. And by clipping, I mean taking dresses that were much to small and clipping it to my bra so that I could see what it looked like. It was absolutely awesome.

So I tried on several dresses, including this one by Nicole Miller:

And I ended up getting something very different than what I thought I would end up with. Perhaps I will post more details later, but I haven’t yet decided if I want to tell Mr. Dahlia about the details of my dress.

Can we persuade you to show us your dress please please please?

It must be in the rules somewhere that you have to show the readers your wedding dress *searching rules furiously*

my first dress experience was at Davids and they only had sparkly, poofy, beaded dresss. So thats what i thought i had to get. then i went to one more place and found the perfect, unsparkly, no beads, no “cupcake” dress. it by Paloma Blanca and i love it. They are out there. You just have to look. Congrats on finding yours!

I got this dress too!!! It is sort of Oscar-style. Clean, classic and modern in the same dress. I am absolutely thrilled with it. I got so excited to see it on your entry!!!

My sister wore the Kayla dress for her wedding and it looked completely awesome.

And I think we have a few similarities; I also took a while to try on dresses. I got engaged in mid-March and just went to try on dresses for the first time in the last week of September… and my next stops are at Jenny Yoo and Nicole Miller.

Congrats on finding your dress!!!

Thanks for being so specific about the locations of the stores! I’m sorry you had a nasty experience at Catan’s (I’ve heard good and bad stories about it), but I never would have thought of looking in Hudson.

When I came back to Ohio to find a dress with my Mom, we never expected to find a dress at Catan’s. My Mom had a bad experience there while looking for a dress for my sister’s wedding a few years ago. After trying a few smaller salons, we decided to head to Catan’s. I think we lucked out with our associate (we showed up w/ no appointment). She was incredibly friendly and sweet. I actually liked that they she left us alone for awhile b/c I was uncomfortable having sales people hovering. We tried higher end salons to get ideas as well as a discount outlet (to appease Mom). Then nicer salons let me browse and helped me when I needed it. The associate at the outlet was the most pushy and thought every (awful) dress looked “beautiful”. I’m not a person who believes that there is a “perfect dress” for me. My dress is beautiful (no sequins/bling in sight) and fits the style of our wedding and our budget. I had viewed All Brides Beautiful’s website prior to shopping - it looks like a lovely shop. That’s one of two shops I would have liked to have visited but my time was limited.
