Will You Be Our Groomsman?

October 19th, 2007 @ 2:43 pm by Mrs. Lovebird

The very first DIY project Mr. Lovebird and I undertook together was working on how to ask our groomsmen if they would honor us by being in our wedding party. I always liked the idea of personalized water bottles, like Mrs. Firefly and Mrs. Caterpillar did, so I bounced that idea off of him and said maybe we can do beer bottles instead. After scouring the net for some bottle label images via Google Images, we settled on good old Guinness.

So we started messing around with the image on Adobe but ended up using Microsoft Paint; though not as advanced, it was simpler to use and served our purpose. By using the magic wand function we filled in all the parts we wanted to change by picking the color we wanted to fill it in with.

Then we personalized it by changing the year to 1982, which just so happened to be everyone’s birth year. My fiance and I met in high school and all of our groomsmen were our fellow high school classmates. And instead of the “Brewed by…” we put “Hand picked by Miss and Mr. Lovebird”. We also changed the “Guinness” to “Groomsman” and added each of their individual names. Of course the groom wanted to play around with his own label and to indicate the best man, we changed the “Original” to “Premium.”

We then put the image on a USB and headed to Staples to buy labels and have them printed in color. We found Avery #5264 to be the perfect fit. Then we went to the Waldbaum’s and picked up a six pack of Guinness Extra Stout.

And the finished product… drumroll….

Later on that night, he had the guys over his apartment and nonchalantly handed out the beer. It didn’t take long for them to catch on. The rest is for the history books.

Has anyone done something like this before? I’m interested to know what creative ways others have used to ask people to be in their wedding party.

Was there any problem with condensation and the labels?

Such a cute idea!
I don’t live in the same location as my bridesmaids, and I definitely couldn’t afford 5 plane tickets to visit each of them and ask in person. Instead, I baked cookies in wedding shapes (engagement ring, cake, dress, heart) and decorated the cookies. I put their name on the dress, our wedding date on the heart, and then on the cake, wrote out “Be My Bridesmaid” (or MOH). I included a card with the cookie package in which I photoshopped a picture of them into the ugliest bridesmaid dress image I could find online, and wrote a little heartfelt note about why I wanted them to be a part of my big day.
We’re also having 2 ushers, as my two best friends are male. I also made them cards, but photoshopped them into a regular bridesmaids dress, and wrote a little poem about how they wouldn’t look right in a dress so would they be an usher instead. I was able to hand-deliver the cards to them over dinner, since at the time they both lived in the same city as me.
I have to say that the cards and cookies went over really well, and I am thrilled that I asked in a way they will remember moreso than just calling over the phone.

I did that for my sister’s 19th birthday (legal drinking age in Ontatio is 19). We printed off fun pictures of her and glued them on to 24 beer bottles. She loved it so much she still has the bottles (empty of course).

Angel~ there was condensation, but it’s not like we were going to serve them cold beer so there wasn’t much that could be done.

Jen~ feel free, that’s what I’m here for =)

Julie & Mrs. Emerald~ I did something similar to what Julie did for my bridesmaids. I picked out a blank card with a beautiful black and white photograph of a flower on it and wrote them a little poem asking them to be my BMs. Then, I took them out to dinner and gave it to them. It brought tears to their eyes =)

Thanks for all the praise everyone~ I hope I will not disappoint in the future. Pressure is on! Next up will probably be gocco invites!
