Reflections On A Dress

October 21st, 2007 @ 2:54 pm by Ms. Dahlia

Now that all is said and done, there are a couple of thoughts I have about buying a dress.-Do not spend any money in a place that treats you rudely. Your dollars speak loudly, and by refusing to spend money in a place that does not value all of their customers and encouraging others to do the same, the shop will eventually have no choice but to change the way they respect customers if they want to stay in business.

-Wear a strapless bra.

-Bring a hair clip (if you have longer hair) to hold your hair up. It enables you to see what you look like in a given dress with your hair up (and down).

-Be respectful, kind and courteous (remember that Girl Scout Law!) to the salespeople. They will (typically) respect you, if you respect them.

-Do try on dresses outside of your price range, if you are extremely confident in your ability to stick to your price range. No matter how awesome a dress was, I was absolutely completely unwilling to spend more than $1000 on a dress. I will (most likely) wear it once. But by trying on more expensive dresses- $4000+- I was able to know what high quality fabric and an extremely well made dress felt like. As bargain shopper extraordinaire, I am ecstatic about the quality of the dress I got for the price I paid.

-Filene’s Basement Sale, at least in Cleveland, is absolutely worth going to. People were nice, there wasn’t much pushing/shoving really at all, and it enabled me to try on lots of dresses really quickly. However, if you are not a street size 4/6/8, pickings are slim. It is also best if you are under 5’8″ tall.

-If you will be 5’10″ or taller (with shoes) on your wedding day, regardless of what size you wear, you can pretty much forget about getting a sample dress, or a used dress. I looked for eight months at least every other day at the usual suspects (preowned wedding dresses, the knot dress board, craigslist, and ebay), and during that time, only came across maybe 4 dresses that were long enough, and none of which were my style.

-Finally, don’t dismiss bridesmaid dresses, or dresses from high end bridesmaid dress designers. Siri, Thread and Jenny Yoo all have gorgeous dresses that would work as bridal gowns.

Great post — thanks for all the helpful ideas!

I’m more optimistic about sample dresses for taller brides, though. Most are 60″ long, and even though I’m 6′2″ in my wedding heels, the 60″ dress only comes 2 inches off the ground in front. When I’m in flats, it overhangs the ground by about an inch. (Worth it for comfort at the reception!) I was actually happy to be just the right size that samples don’t need to be shortened!

- don’t pay everything up front…most places you put half down and half when the dress comes in. That way if anything is wrong you can withhold payment until it’s fixed. If they want 100% up front something is wrong unless you are walking out of the store with it that day.

- put it on a credit card (then pay it off of course), that way if there is a problem you can dispute it and you will have the backing of your CC company

- get everything in writing…if your dress is being ordered in a certain style, size, color, extra length, extra fabric, different neckline, etc. make sure it is all clearly written on your invoice so if the dress doesn’t come as it was supposed to you have room to argue

- check the measurements they do on you, check the sizing chart they are ordering off of and make sure they are getting the right size (go with the size of your largest measurement, the rest can be taken in).

Hi all!

I got my gorgeous Paloma Blanca dress for $600 on Ebay!

I am having a few things changed at a seamstress, but other than that, it is an absolutely gorgeous dress that was worn once before at another wedding.

I am thrilled with the quality of the dress, and even more thrilled at what I got for the price!!! Trust me, a $600 wedding dress feels WONDERFUL!

I always asked to see how the dress would look bustled. I knew I wanted a French bustle, so if a dress didn’t look right with a French bustle, it was an easy one to weed out.

Thanks for the tips! I went into my first wedding gown shopping experience this past Friday and boy was I unprepared. No hair clip and no strapless bra. I did find my dress though after my third try! ;D I will keep all this in mind when I go back to order my dress!

Wear leggings!!! If you’re shy like me, do not go in your regular undies. The sales people need to help you in the dresses since they are delicate and sometimes heavy. They have seen a million girls, so it’s nothing to them. But if you’re not used to people seeing you in your undies, then wear some leggings. The dresses will still fit over you and you won’t waste time being embarrassed. I wore leggings and it definitely helped!
