Engagement Shoot Location

October 22nd, 2007 @ 4:38 pm by Mrs. Peony

I’m sorry I’ve been MIA lately. Between trying to get a good mortgage rate amidst these market conditions (WaMu’s CFO said last week, “I have never seen housing credit conditions change so significantly over such a short period of time, nor can I remember a period when there was less clarity about near-term housing and credit trends.” sad021 ) and Mr Peony breaking out in one of the worst cases of poison ivy I’ve ever seen bummed011, I just haven’t been in a blogging mood lately.

However, I’m happy to announce that we finally decided on a location for our engagement photo session. We know that on the actual day of the wedding, we will be shooting in Central Park and a very urban environment that is TBD. At first we wanted someplace urban as well for the engagement photos, but nothing really stood out. Our photographer suggested Coney Island, but it has been such a popular location for engagement photos lately and I wanted something a bit different. In addition, Mr Peony and I had never visited Coney Island together before and I wanted a location that was meaningful to us.

I racked my brain for my favorite spots in NYC - there are so many!

Then it hit me, and I couldn’t believe it wasn’t my first choice from the beginning. The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

As a one-time art history major and an avid museum-lover, the Met is definitely one of my favorite places in the city. I had been accepted to their summer internship program years ago and it was one of the best experiences of my life (this was the same summer they shot The Thomas Crown Affair, and although the museum did not allow them to shoot inside, it was quite a treat to see Pierce Brosnan doing his thang on the museum’s outside steps winky039 ). In addition, Mr Peony and I had one of the best dates of our relationship while visiting the museum together.

I immediately checked the Met’s photography policies. Still photography is permitted for personal, non-commercial use only in the areas of the museum’s permanent collection. There is no flash photography allowed, nor can you use video cameras.

I contacted our photographer, who said no flash is fine just as long as it’s not too dark. He loved the idea - he had never done a photo shoot inside the museum and was excited to try something different.

There are so many beautiful places inside the 5-block-long museum. However, the places that come to my mind are:

1. The Astor Court in the Asian wing. This Chinese garden court is modeled after the architecture and decor of the Ming dynasty. It’s one of the most serene and beautiful locations in the museum, at least IMHO.

2. The Sackler Wing in the Egyptian galleries, where the famous Temple of Dendur stands. I love ancient Egyptian art, and the Sackler Wing is one of the most well-known places in the museum (a scene from the movie When Harry Met Sally was filmed here) with its fountain, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park, and, of course, impressive Egyptian art.

3. The Courtyard at the American Wing. Surrounded by sculptures, decorative shrubs and bushes, stained glass art and a fountain in the middle, this is yet another picturesque destination in the museum. The last time I visited, it was closed for renovations and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it will be open when we return for the engagement photos.

4. The Petrie European Sculpture Court - another bright, airy, beautiful location in the museum with soaring ceilings and magnificent marble sculptures.

5. The staircase by the 20th Century Art galleries. It doesn’t sound too impressive and I can’t find any pictures of it online. But it has windows looking out to Central Park, and looking above you can see glimpses of modern installment art, paintings, and sculptures.

The one thing that all these locations have in common is that there are windows that bring in tons of natural light on sunny days. In addition to these, I also want to try taking some pictures in low light, with a high ISO setting so that some graininess comes through the pictures. I think they’d create some very vintage-y, romantic looks.

How did you choose your photo locations? Do they have any significance to you or your SO?

Miss Peony, I’m so jealous…your photos will look gorgeous!

A word of caution, tho’: You might want to ask your photog to trim down the number of cameras & lenses he brings…if he looks too pro-photo-y, you could get bounced. (I think that the “non-commercial” rule means that b/c he’s charging YOU to take photos, it is a commercial enterprise, and isn’t technically allowed.) There are a lot of places here that are like that…we got tossed out of a Buddhist temple grounds (ha, very non-Buddhist, no?) b/c we brought our photogs to take pix. We got a few great shots b/c the guy that gave us the boot was nice enough to just observe for about 10 mins. and then kick us out. We got nabbed b/c on the way in, the gate guard could see into the car and saw the ginormous camera set up one of the photogs had on his lap.

Miss Peony, I would check with the museum before making arrangements with your photographer. They may interpret a photo-shoot there to be “commercial,” despite the photos being for your personal use only. I think “personal, non-commercial” photos would be more like a tourist’s photo of single artwork….

Thanks for the concern, ladies. I already called the museum and double-checked with them. Although the person I talked to sounded a bit confused when I described the situation, he said it shouldn’t be a problem if we’re careful, quiet, and considerate of the other visitors.

You should also think about taking photos up on the roof garden. You’ll get some great skyline photos up there!

The Met is so beautiful! I’ve never been before, and now I wish I could go to New York just for that! Especially if it’s the museum in “From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.” Loved that book growing up.

We chose our university in Orlando as our engagement shoot backdrop. Not that we’re extremely school spirited, but we did hang around the grounds a lot during our years there, and there are different buildings that provide a very retro or very modern look. Plus, there are lots of squirrels. I hope to get a picture with a squirrel!

We chose a popular park in Houston. I had always seen people getting their pictures taken there, and I wanted some too! It’s also one of my favorite places in the city and is surrounded by our church, my alma mater, and the Med Center where FH goes to med school.

We just did ours at Navy Pier in Chicago since it is very “Chicago” without being your typical down in the loop or in Millinium park that you see everywhere. I would also say as the other girls did that you will probably want to have your photographer keep the gear to a minimum since they threatened to toss us as well even though their policy was similar. The thing that set off the security people on us was using a Tripod and a large white lens that the photographer had so you might want to tell you photographer to nix the tripod and any lenses that look a little to too abnormal. Just an FYI, good luck and it looks like a great place to get some fantastic pics, plus it’s meaningful and that’s a huge plus :).

I was totally thinking of taking e-pics at the Met too! But then I came up with a better idea :)

But seriously, I LOVE the met.

OMG - what timing! I was trying to think of a place for family portraits and thought of the Met too (specifically, the Sackler Wing and Astor Court)! I wonder if they will allow it though.

As a fan of The Thomas Crowne Affair, I think the Met is an awesome idea - also, it looks beautiful. Please post the pictures!

We got engaged in Central Park so if we ever get around to taking engagement pics, I hope it will be there. I do love the Met as well as the Guggenheim. I think each of your location choices is divine. I would also suggest a few classic shots outside on the steps, eating a NY hot dog (pretzel if your veggies.) That’s one of my favorite touristy things to do on a warm, beautiful day. Please post some photos when you can!
