About Miss Lovebird

One of the most important aspects to a wedding is the photographer; as I’m sure you are all aware. So I’ve pondered over this question for some time now. Do I go with a US-based photographer or with a local, Cancun-based photographer?

There are so many talented photographers out there that this decision is almost impossible to make. Mrs. Ant’s post titled “The Ultimate Wedding Photography Blog List” was an invaluable resource for an indecisive bride-to-be like me. All the photographers there are amazing and I would be lucky to have any one of them. All my favorites were on there like: Angelica Glass, Scott Robert, Jessica Claire, Leigh Miller, Tony Yang, Something in Blue… the list goes on and on.

But what also stood out were the three Mexico-based photographers on her list: Sol Tamargo, Matt Adcock and Elizabeth Medina. Although they didn’t make Mrs. Ant’s list, two of my other favorites include DQ Studios and Claudia Rodriguez. I’m saving these photographers for Round 2.

Many of my fellow bees have been lucky enough to have some of these photographers shoot their weddings. For those of you who aren’t familiar, you should read Mrs. Ant’s post. But let me at least post one picture from the ones I did name. By the way, I tried to find a picture the photographer shot for a DW/beach wedding. I’m sorry to all the photographers I didn’t get to list, trust me there are so many of you that I love, but I hope you understand that I didn’t want to spend a whole week writing this post.

OMG~It has taken me hours to write this post because I had the hardest time finding some of these pictures. But it was all worth it. They are beautiful aren’t they? The only thing holding me back from contacting any of them yet is my budget. We would be saving a considerable amount of money if we went with a local, Cancun-based photographer since we wouldn’t have to pay their fee on top of their travel and lodging expenses. Any thoughts?

If there are Cancun based photogs that you love - I say go with one of those…they’ll likely have some additional location ideas for pics because they may know the area better…good luck!

I personally love Tony Yang, but Hami Harri’s tip might be a good one. Think about all the great photos you could get that are more artistic than “wedding-y” because you can use areas that tourists usually don’t go to.

If you’re planning on using a US based photographer outside the country, you might want to take into account the costs of airfare and hotel (will you be paying or the photographer?) and making sure he has the proper permits/licenses (if any are required) to work in Cancun.

For $ reasons, I would go with a Mexico-based photographer if there is one you like just as well. (We’re flying in our photographer and assistant to our DW so we know the high cost involved).

i love how mrs. ant keeps popping up as inspiration for other brides. i think that’s awesome.

that’s some solid advice already up in terms of costs between shipping an US-based photog in over using a local vendor. plus, with shots as amazing as the local vendors are it’s not a bad thing to seriously consider

I would say go with the Cancun photogs if cost is an issue but the photos are still of the same quality. I also just wanted to reply to this post because Something In Blue are the photographers I am using! And were also the photogs that my friend used last year when she got married. They are fantastic to work with and just take REALLY beautiful photos.

Also to add, I didn’t think any of the photographers I was looking at in Jamaica were of the same quality as the New York photographers. So we did opt to bring our photog down. That’s why I said only if you can find one of equal or better quality…

Many of you just need to do the research and save the money. We mainly do DW because of the beauty and price! Why pay to bring someone with you when there are fantastic photograpers within your DW area? Who knows the landscape, challenges and beauty more than someone who lives, breathes and photographs it every day! I would never recommend anything else but the best and I had the honor to work with one of those in Mexico, Elizabeth Medina. I could have got married in a shack and she would have made it look fabulous. If you do not believe me, go to my slideshow on her website. http://www.elizabethmedinaphotography.com/CJ/ If you are looking to arrange travel or create your own travel registry where people can contribute to your trip, honeymoon OR massages on the beach, go to http://www.JenkinsTravel4Fun.com. It is great.
