DIY Direction/Map Cards

October 23rd, 2007 @ 4:42 pm by Mrs. Radish

Yet another thing I forgot to blog about before our wedding was making the direction/map card to insert with our invitations. Similar to when I made our after party invites, I decided to make them myself because I’m cheap and, since I am Adobe challenged, I used Microsoft Publisher to design the card. I got the clip art from a few good public domain sites (see below for links). That part was pretty easy. Making the map, however, was kind of a pain. I used the directions from the MapBio on the Knot, and it probably took me a t least 5 hours to make the darn thing. But on the bright side, it was free and it came out pretty well.

Front (I whited out our last names for privacy)

I printed these on cream colored cardstock folded in half like a greeting card. I didn’t want to spend any money on the printing, so I ran them off using the good old Xerox at my office (shhh, don’t tell - it was after work hours, I promise!). I’m sure they would’ve looked much nicer printed in color or in higher resolution, but we decided to spend more money on our photography so we had to cut back on this kind of stuff.

On the inside page with the map, I included driving directions to the church from the major highways coming from points north, south, east, and west. Then I gave driving directions from the church to the reception, and from the reception to the after party. This seemed to work very well and most people actually brought the card with them on the day of the wedding and used the directions.

And just in case anyone is looking for some good vintage style clipart — here are some sites I used:

Clipart ETC - this site rules! There are a ton of great banners, frames, and borders. All public domain and free!

Karen’s Whimsy - many free public domain images of birds, flowers, vintage drawings, etc.

AntiqueClipart.com - small and medium images for free; larger images for sale.

So when I right click on the map it doesn’t give me the option of saving. It just zooms the map out. I think this probably worked on the older version of mapquest.

Which website did you get the bird images below your map from?

Emily — I can’t remember exactly where I found that one. But I will post the image for you on the “beehive” board and you can save it from there.

(sorry I would post here in the comments but I don’t think it works.)

While I am browsing DIY ideas, I just happened to come across yours and mention my site - Clipart ETC! I spent years on that site. We purchased very old books and would scan in the images. I’m glad some brides are getting good use out of it besides just teachers that we developed it for!! :)
