I Have A Confession…

October 23rd, 2007 @ 2:45 pm by Mrs. Cherry Blossom

I didn’t “discover” the real need and importance of shaping my brows until only a few years ago, and that wasn’t until my gfs pushed me into it…. literally. Case in point: We were walking to this “store” that they wanted me to check out, and as we were passing the salon, they literally shoved me into it. Lesson learned then? No. It wasn’t until maybe the 2nd or 3rd time when my bushy brows would return and drive them bonkers; they’d offer to shape ’em for me again and again until I fell in love.

Eye brows really do frame your face and make a world of a difference. I look back at my old pictures and seriously cringe. Hahaha, man I had light but buuuuuuuuushy brows. I’m so very happy with shaping my brows now that I try to maintain them - not myself because I’ve tried and trust me, they were BAD!!!!! - it’s best that I get professional help.

Lately I’ve been visiting the Benefit Brow Bar at the Macy’s in downtown San Francisco. They have tons of brow specialists that will work wonders on your brows. But it’s very important to make an appointment because if you try to get a walk-in appointment, be prepared to wait upwards of an hour.

If you’re interested in a tutorial on how to DIY your own brows, check out RiceBunny’s Basic EyeBrow Tutorial
z114731
She gives an awesome great step-by-step tutorial with pictures and video. I have yet to try it because I really don’t trust myself with tweezers - I’m afraid I might end up with NO eyebrows or a few scarce pieces. But this tutorial seems easy enough.

Now if you’ve already graduated from DIY brows or getting them professionally done, check out this new product called Brow Zing! Only earlier this year at a wedding did I attempt to lightly color in my brows to give them some shape, but in pictures I realized they appeared a lot darker than I wanted. This amazing product just tints your brows, giving them color and shape more naturally, so I highly recommend it. Visit a Brow Bar and have them pick the right shade for you and test it out before making the purchase.

On the left is the wax, on the right is the shadow. Using the tiny angle brush to brush some wax then powder, and apply a thin line to the bottom edge of your brow. Use the 2nd brush or a dry mascara type brush to brush the line upwards to smooth it out. You end up with nicely tinted brows that aren’t too dark and just right!

I plan to get my brows touched up regularly, and probably the Monday before the wedding so they’re near fresh.

What are your brow secrets?

My guy and I both got them done at Gene Juarez for our wedding. I don’t have a lot of eyebrows, so having them shaped really made what I have show up. And for him, it just gave him a well-groomed look without being obvious.

I’ve probably been getting my eyebrows threaded for almost a decade…would never go back to waxing…too harsh, too expensive, and not nearly as precise. If you live anywhere near a south asian, middle eastern, or eastern european community you should be able to find a threader for $5-15.

For Chicago readers, Nicole Jacob at the Paul Rehder Salon is an eyebrow miracle worker. There are no words for how amazing she is.

I’ve been DIY for the last ten years. FI calls it my OCD secret. I check them out once or twice a day, and usually pluck two or three teeny-tiny hairs every night. I am seriously obsessed with having perfect brows (not over- nor under-plucked.) I’ve always done them myself, so I don’t trust any professional. And since I pluck instead of waxing, I don’t have to wait for them to “grow in” at all, so they’re always in good condition.

The most important thing is having a good tweezer. I never realized how much of a help it was, until I was at my parents house for the night, and tried to use my mom’s (yes, I can’t even go one night without checking for strays).

I’m in Seattle too, I’d love a recommendation for a waxer or a threader!

If you’re in the SF area, Madeline at the Anastasia center in Nordstrom (SF Centre) does an excellent job! She created arch (perfecto) where there was no arch before! Luv her!

I get mine threaded, and it is fantastic. Less painful, more precise AND cheaper than getting them waxed - total win!

I know it’s not the greatest quality, but for my first adventure with waxing I went with some friends to the local Wal-Mart. Granted, I came out with slightly uneven brows and haven’t gotten them waxed again since, but it was $7 and got me over my fear. Ask your friends who they recommend. As a college student in an all-female dorm, I’m always asking around.

I love RiceBunny! About once or twice a year I get them waxed and then I pluck to maintain the shape.. I also use clinique brow shaper in charcoaled, but I just bought Lipocils Eyebrow extender so we’ll see how that goes :)

I found a great threader in Boston and started going last month. I’m fully prepared to fork over the money for the rest of my life, it’s that good. ;) It’s the first time I’ve ever gotten them done professionally, and I have a bit of growing-in to do. But I’m going to try and maintain them on my own, so I’ve taken to plucking any new hair every morning and night. What a difference nicely shaped brows has made for me!
