Rain, Rain…Don’t Go Away!

October 23rd, 2007 @ 10:59 am by Mrs. Magnolia

Like Miss Peony, I have to apologize for not blogging lately. Mr. Magnolia and I just sold my condo and bought a house (forthcoming: a very exciting blog about purchasing a home in the middle of a mortgage crisis!), and we’ve been moving, unpacking, organizing, and making multiple trips to Home Depot. Add to that a recent promotion at work (yay! :)) and some futile attempts on my part to focus on wedding planning, and….well, things have been nuts.

But I do have topic to address today…weather!

This was the scene in Atlanta this morning:

Rain, Rain...Don't Go Away! : wedding weather Rain

This kind of weather is the worst nightmare some brides could have, right? Particularly if we’re talking about those who have planned (or are planning) a beautiful outdoor ceremony or reception…

Honestly, I couldn’t tell you the last time a Saturday bride in Atlanta had to worry about rain on her wedding day. Every weekend as far back as I can recall has been picture-perfect. So what’s the problem?

Rain, Rain...Don't Go Away! : wedding weather Drought

(photo courtesy ajc.com…yes, that is a dock in what used to be a lake.)

Drought. North Georgia is in the middle of an unprecedented drought, so the rain today is a welcome change from the beautiful (but increasingly dangerous) weather we’ve been having lately. I love clear skies and 75 degrees as much as the next guy, but when state officials are saying that we have less than three months worth of water left…well, it’s kind of scary.

When Mr. Magnolia and I decided to schedule our wedding for January, we acknowledged that we are going to be at the mercy of Mother Nature. We’re planning an evening, winter wedding. It’s going to be cold. It may very well be wet. I can hope that we don’t have an ice storm, but there’s nothing to be done about it if we do. Plus, any negative feelings about rain pretty much make me feel like a horrible person. How can I hope for a clear day when we’re looking at the possibility of a major city just flat out running out of water?

And I have to admit, I love wedding pictures with adorable umbrellas. I think it’s still kind of unexpected, and the photos end up absolutely beautiful.

So, keep the rain coming! I’ll gladly take a downpour on our wedding day. (Just, please…no ice!)

I give you kudos for buying a condo during this crazy mortgage crisis. We ended up terminating our agreement on a cute little home because our mortgage kept changing- and getting worse!

i agree totally…pictures with rain can be fun and beautiful. And happy to hear GA is getting the rain it needs. Congrats also on being the bride of the week on the Knot. Always good to see a Bee on there.

I’ve become a weather channel stalker with this drought, never fear-another large rain shower is coming our way in a few hours! phew!

I think the rain can make for really romantic pictures. Plus, in many cultures, rain on your wedding day is considered very good luck!

it’s pouring here in nashville, too, and i’m so happy. i catch myself starting to complain and have to stop!

i wouldn’t mind rain on my wedding day except that i’m planning on an outdoor venue that doesn’t allow tenting; we’d have to move the ceremony inside and shift everything around at the last minute….i guess that’s a strong argument in favor of a DOC!

The fires from droughts are still going in California, so I’m glad you’re getting the rain.

It rained on our wedding day and made for some great pictres (even if we had to move the ceremony indoors).

amysue, our videographer/photographer couple helped us move the ceremony indoors. I didn’t really care where we got married that day as long as I got married, so I let them determine where the best lighting would be. We ended up with one row of chairs in a semi-circle for family and then had everyone else stand. Since the ceremony was only 6 minutes, it wasn’t too bad. The barn doors were flung open to let in the natural light and the twinkle lights did the rest. It was very intimate even if it wasn’t exactly how I had originally planned it.

true enough, angel. i’ll just have to remember that! it just seems like such a shame to pay for and hope for a venue that will be outdoors and beautiful, then to have everyone stuck inside. hopefully as i continue to plan i’ll be able to put it more in perspective. besides, i could always pick out some cute contingency umbrellas and galoshes. : )

p.s. reading about the poor knotties on the san diego board *definitely* puts things in perspective…i’ll take a sweet, cooling rain any day.

I’m in the upstate of SC, and the drought has been horrible this year. There’s a lot of talk about GA having to use SC’s water, which is really low, too. It rained off and on all day today, which was wonderful. Miss Magnolia, did y’all have tornado watches, too? They were listed all over northern GA/upstate SC according to FOX (yay HOUSE!).
