Poll Time!

October 24th, 2007 @ 5:59 pm by Mrs. Cherry Blossom

Mr. CB and I have decided not to do the Save-the-Date cards. sad It’ll save us money we can put towards another project. But we could still send them via email like the awesome ones Mrs. Eggplant sent out!!! I’m curious …

Are you sending out save the dates?

I’m also curious - how many of you are using a wedding website? I asked my html savvy not-so-little cousin to help draft one up for me that I looooooved, but I’m not sure how I’ll update it and how often people might actually check it. There are so many great free templates and so many cool sites that I’ve seen. For those that are using one or have used one, how useful has it proven to be?

Do you have a wedding website?

We used post card…not sure if that should have gone under “cards”, and I wish we could have had a wedding website.

I “had” a wedding website. Last month I closed it (without telling anyone), I didn’t think anyone (guests, family) were checking it for updated and useful information. I felt like my efforts were not being put to their best use (I’m a busy girl!) . . . and I was right. No one has noticed our website is missing, or if they have they don’t care b/c I haven’t gotten any feedback.

My STD Magents were a huge hit though!

We’re having magnets sent out because ours is on a holiday weekend — Sunday after Friday, July 4. We’re also doing a wedding website and blog — if my techie FI can get his patootie in gear! :)

We’re just going to do email STD’s and we’ll print out a few copies of them for the few guests who don’t “do” email (mostly grandparents and a few older guests.)

With regards to the wedding website - I’m just using one of the free template ones you can join, but I do think they’re a good idea. I don’t expect my guests to check the site frequently; probably they’ll only check it once or twice, but I think it’s a good place to put directions, times/dates of wedding events, registry info (you can’t include it in invitations, but you can include it on your website without breaching etiquette!), accommodation room blocks etc for the convenience of your guests.

We made STD magnets. Really simple and easy - printed from my computer, designed in Word.

We also have a wedding website. It’s the easiest way to communicate with people who live out-of-state… and out-of-country (my fiance is Canadian)!

wedding website is extremely helpful for passing along registry information.

We are having our wedding in Philadelphia, which is my fiance’s hometown. Neither of us live there now, and none of my family is in the area, but I’m not really considering it a “destination” wedding since half the guests are from the area. However, we did send out a STD (magnet form), just over one year before the wedding. We’re getting married on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, and quite a few of our family members own shore homes which they “open” for the year on Memorial Day. We wanted them to know before they went to the shore this year that they would potentially have alternative plans the following year, should they decide to come.
We also have a wedding webpage, which I designed on my own from scratch — my first attmempt with HTML and CSS (it took a LOT of time). We have lots of information up there on hotels, things to do in the area, restaurants, etc., which has received rave reviews from my out-of-town family. We actually had an engagement brunch in Philly in June and several of my family members flew in, and they were thrilled that I already had information online about what to do in the area!
Truthfully though, unless you are getting married on a holiday weekend I don’t think STD’s are necessary, and unless you have a large number of guests coming in from out of town, I don’t think you need a wedding website anymore elaborate than something on theknot.com which people can search for when they are looking for your registry information.

We’re using one of the free wedding websites. It’s good for general information. My friends have already found it despite my not giving out the address yet.
I’m sending STD because they are kind of doubling as engagement annoucements for some people. Not exactly good ettiquette. But I don’t want to write we’re getting married a 100 times!

We got STD magnets, I bought them online - they were only $80, so its not like it cut a major chunk of my budget. I decide I wanted them because our date is going to be kind of popular (6/7/08) and we’ll have several out of town guests, so I wanted them to know the date early so they could start planning trips well in advance. And the rest of the people - well its just something fun. I was getting a lot of “when are you getting married again?” So I thought they can put it on their fridge and quit asking me. :)

One of the ways our website came in handy was when the Travel and Tourism bureau in the wedding area sent me a URL for ridiculous hotel deals. (Cape Cod for $79? In June?! Ridiculous!)

Now we use it to link to guests’ flickr albums of the wedding, and share coupon codes for the site where the pro photos are hosted. We also posted the answers to all the wedding crossword puzzles.

What? You don’t have wedding crossword puzzles? Come on!

We sent out STD postcards from Vista Print. It was only $15 for 100 cards, and that was only because we chose to upload our own images - otherwise it would have only been $5 for the shipping.

We’re getting married close to our home, but the rest of our families our from out of state, so we thought it would be helpful sending out STDs with accommodation information, as well as a link to our website with even more details (directions, maps, area attractions, etc). I’m sure not everyone will check it, but if only a few find it helpful, it will be worth it.

We sent out STD cards. I bought card stock from Staples, designed something quick on Pages (Mac) and sent it off to my printer. It cost me $50. Quick little project while catching up on my soaps. My husband set up our website using IWeb…added music, profile on us, pictures, wedding details and later our honeymoon. It was great! and continues to be an evolving site for our friends and family to keep in touch with us.

I am a graphic designer and I work on a Mac, but I have never done web design (strictly a print kinda’ gal!). I have recently been playing around with iWeb, which was included with my new MacBook Pro, and over the last 3 nights have created a pretty decent wedding website (if I do say so myself!). There are templates to use, and I used one to get started, but changed most things about it eventually (which is easy to do). The only thing I’ll pay for is a domain name, since the .mac name is a bit cumbersome. If you’re on a Mac but aren’t html-savvy, I highly recommend this program if you’re interested in creating a unique wedding website.

Our wedding is on a Sunday and a very high percent are traveling from out of town so we are doing STD cards and I designed magnets to print out. The magnets might be kind duplicating but my family will enjoy and they were a total of $6 for the printable magnet sheets.

I created a wedding website by using blogger with a custom domain. By using their widgets to add link list I was able to create a “navigation bar” to the various post that have all the important info. And I have been able to add alot of fun stuff for all those people that are coming into town with our favorite restaurants and things to do, etc. I am kind of a geek about those things and had a lot of fun doing it… and after the wedding we can post about our honeymoon and have links to flickr or picasa web for photo sharing.

So… I want to let you know that Save the Dates are absolutely not necessary.

We Invited 140 people to our Sunday evening wedding that we had this fall… We only got 4 no’s on the RSVP replies, and on the big day we had 6 no-shows that were all unavoidable/random medically related reasons

We sent our invites out 8 weeks prior for the out of towners and 6 weeks prior for the locals. It worked out great, and we didn’t have to spend the extra money on the save-the-date materials and postage

oh yeah, at least 50% of our guests were from out of town (both friends and family)

We did have a wedding website that we had listed on the invitations for extra info (registry info, hotel info, and a general timeline, etc.)

I sent out STDs because I am obsessed with my gocco and I needed to do a project, lest I fall over and die from gocco withdrawl.

So I did it for purely selfish reasons…guests knowing my wedding date be damned. I just needed a project :)

Okay not really, but kind of…okay, really. Its hard to come up with stuff to blog about! :)

We’re going to send out a STD card, although sometimes I wonder why because almost everyone knows our wedding date already. Like Miss Penguin, I think I wanted to send them more for my amusement than anything else! :)

We also have a wedding website, through Wedding Window. It’s a little pricey, but so user-friendly and I love the interface. I think/hope it’s going to be a great resource for our guests.

I’m waiting for save-the-dates in the mail right now as we speak. We did a smaller card that inadvertently matched our invitations. I think save-the-dates depend entirely on your guest list. Are you inviting people that are invited to many other events (including weddings)? Do they have busy lifestyles where they could forget the detail of your wedding date?

I’m also using Wedding Window like Miss Jasmine above and I recommend it often. Like she said, it can be pricey but I think it has the perfect interface and allows you enough customization without being overwhelming.

We only sent our STD announcements to all our family from out of town (since most of our families already resided in our city). We wrote a handwritten letter to each household and enclosed a small framed engagement picture of the both of us.

It’s nice because when we had a chance to visit some of our out of town guests later after we were married, there is our framed picture in their home.

I guess STD’s aren’t necessary for everyone, but for me, they were an introduction to our wedding- visually (our colors and style) and practically (giving out website info).
Also, our wedding is in the Caribbean so we wanted to make sure everyone knew way ahead of time.

My FI created our wedding website from scratch- it’s a great tool for putting flight info and hotel info. Also, I use my friends’ websites to remind me of schedules and times, etc. (what time is the rehearsal dinner?- that sort of thing).

I agree that STD’s are not neccasey for everyone. The only reason we are doing it is because our wedding is over a holiday weekend and lots of family lives out of town, we dont even live where our wedding is taking place. Also we are doing a STD/Holiday card, that was another factor in why we decieded to do them.

We’re sending STDs because 100% of our guest list is from out-of-town. And a great many have very busy lives — especially on a Saturday in June! For the same reasons, we also did a wedding web site on weddingwindow.com. More expensive, but I liked their desgins the best, and because we’re having a destination wedding I thought people might be looking at it more than for the usual in-town wedding.

Miss CB, have you looked into VistaPrint? I could email you one of their “first time customer’s” offers and they are offering 100 Postcard (or any size, really) printed with either your own, or one you can create on their site, FREEEEEEE!

The Mr. and I are going to do that, along with magnets, so they have something to stick them with.

We also have a wedding website that we made from scratch and I update it frequently with a little “blog” and post updates on the main page, so others know about any changes are new material. I can also post my engagement photos, other photos, put up details about the wedding party, how we met, polls for others to participate in, etc. Plus, it allows others to learn about our area, and what they can do while in town and where to stay.

Good luck! And let me know if you’d like that email…

Our STD’s are stickers from minimoo that can easily go on a calendar. Our wedding is the week before school starts, and the weekend most college students move in, and we wanted everyone to be aware of our special day.

We followed one of the bee’s suggestion and created a blogger wedsite, it’s simple yet has all the info our guests could ever need! I don’t know if this is neccesary, but hopefully at least one person will get some help from it!
