Roll Out The Carpet

October 26th, 2007 @ 9:32 am by Mrs. Petunia

Okay, so it’s not really carpet, and Mr. Petunia was quite disappointed with this: he was expecting something thick and plushy, but we did get our samples from The Original Runner Company for their solid color aisle runners.I asked to see the green because at the time, we weren’t 100% certain whether the girls in the bridal party would be wearing pink perhaps, but now that they’re wearing green, I don’t want the aisle runner to be green, too. Besides, it’s not the right shade of green for us anyway:

I also got them to send me their three shades of pink — one of them which they don’t even yet feature on their website — the fuchsia one. Mr. Petunia can’t handle that much color, alas, and the fact that they called it “Diva” didn’t help.

Now I have to decide between “Confetti,” which though bolder than their lightest pink may not be the most perfect shade of that color for us, and “Perfection.” I’m leaning more toward “Perfection,” but the reason I wanted a solid color aisle runner was for the effect that having a splash of color would make, and I wonder if in the end there’s that much difference between it and white…

I still like the fact that the material feels more substantial than what I’ve noted in typical runners sold in stores or rented out by my local florists. The one we used for Mr. Petunia’s sister’s wedding was a total disaster, and by the time the bride came down the aisle, the runner was pretty much bundled up in a ball.

The company advertises that their runners are made with an exclusive non-slip backing that will hopefully prevent this (it looks/feels like foam):

I wonder if it will still need something on top to keep it from being assaulted by the wind: what do you think? Plus we’ll have to decide what to set up to keep people from trampling all over it as they’re seated. After all, I don’t want it rolled out just me for me like a “diva” — I want to share my runner with the world! Well, not so much that the world gets to walk on it too, lol, but I’d like them to see it in all its glory.

How did you handle the logistics of laying out the runner and keeping it in place?

To avoid the “guests walking on it” thing, you could just rope off the rows of chairs on the aisle side. That way people have to go down the rows from the outer entrance, not walk down the center aisle.

And even the lighter pink will definitely show up as pink, not white. It’s amazing how dark colors get when they’re big swathes of fabric, rather than 3″ swatches!

I love Confetti! =) OK, that’s my two cents!

I completely agree with tanya2s. Swatches look pale but when you have that large an amount of fabric as an aisle runner, there will definitely be a lot of color to it.

You should either go with what tanya2s said about roping off the inner aisle seats, or have the ushers roll the carpet out before the parents begin to walk in (or whoever is first).

hi miss petunia, i forget what your location is like but have you thought about what the surrounding color of the venue is like? i like confetti but i wouldn’t want it to clash with anything since it is a bolder color… just something to think about

I recommend pinning down the runner to the ground so the wind doesn’t catch it. You’ll need some long and heavy duty pins, but any local crafts store should have some good choices. Maybe you can even bend them a little so it acts more like a fish hook and has some resistance.

Pick a pretty ribbon and tie two sections across the back with a bow where they meet in the center. When it’s time to begin the processional, have the first person in line tug on the end of the bow to release the ribbons. All your guests will have entered from the side aisles and left your beautiful runner intact. You may also wish to run ribbon down the aisle, blocking off all the chairs so people don’t cross over the runner once they’re seated.

Hope that helps!

I would also suggest ribboning off the center aisle–wedding guest don’t realize it’s to keep the runner in place, they just think it looks pretty.

As for keeping it in place, I’d use a few heavy duty “u” shaped pins…I don’t know exactly what they’re called, but they look like ENORMOUS staples and we use them on our tent when we’re camping. There is no way they’ll budge. you could also line the sides with stones, which could look very pretty depending on the rest of your decor

Thanks for the tips everyone!

I hope this doesn’t sound dumb but…to what do those pins secure? I ask because our ceremony is taking place in a brick paved area, so is there a way to secure the runner to bricks? (If it’s moved inside, then it would be to carpet, and I wonder what the venue will let us use — I’ll have to ask!).

Outside, the colors won’t clash with anything. Inside, for the backup, the carpet is quite green, so the brighter pink may not work as well…

(Argh, my post disappeared!)

Thanks for all the tips!

Sorry to ask a stupid question, but to what are those big pins secured? I ask because our ceremony is supposed to take place outside in a brick paved area — what does one use to secure the runner to bricks?

If it rains and we get moved inside, then there’s carpet — but then the wind should no longer be a problem! The carpet IS rather green though, so the brighter pink probably would not look so nice…

Hi miss petunia! I have the same issue (my runner will be on a cement walkway)…I’m wondering if good old rolled pieces of duct tape wouldnt just work, rather than pins? Thanks for getting me thinking about that, It didnt even occur to me that the runner might fly away in the wind!

There are some different colors of duct tape out there so it wouldn’t have to be just grey. And you could cover the edges with decorations to hide it. Or possibly put the duct tape on the underiside. Let us know how it works out!

Aha! I thought you were aiming to put the runner on grass.

For hard surfaces like brick or cement, get some floral sticky tac. I usually see it in a dark green color but you can probably also find it in white. Then it sticks between the runner and the brick to hold it in place.

I bought my aisle runner from the same company and was not disappointed! I placed mine on grass and it did not move at all! It was firm on the ground, yet soft and plush when I walked on it. I’m sure if you are placing it on bricks, it will stay even better. The quality of these runners are excellent, great choice!!!
