Finding The One (Part 2)

October 29th, 2007 @ 8:32 am by Mrs. Canary

I only shopped for dresses while living in Seattle/Olympia, so sorry, NYC brides, I don’t have any local reviews. But for all you Seattle area brides, I hit almost all the shops in the area!

Here goes!

Bellevue Bridal Boutique - Downtown, Bellevue

I went here twice. It was also the first place I tried on dresses. It’s a nice shop - small but they have a huge selection. They also had a lot of great dresses marked down to almost 50% off. I’m not sure if that’s available all the time, but it was both times I was there.

I found a gown I really liked here. It was a sample gown close to my budget, but still required a lot of consideration. I was sooooo close to buying, but after looking at photos and sharing with the bridesmaids, I realized it was making me sea-sick. ;) I love bustling and pick ups in dresses, but this one was way too symmetrical. Also, after trying on dresses here, I decided I did not want a veil. I felt too bride-y… though I guess that’s the point.

The positive side is that they allow you to take pictures.

Here’s a picture of me in the rejected dress. It was an Alfred Angelo Piccone with the most beatiful beading at the waist line. The quality was very good and I loved the ivory/champagne color:

I look scared in this one. Ha!

See what I mean by sea-sick?

La Belle Elaine’s - Downtown, Seattle

This is a fantastic store. Everything is organized really well and there is even a bridal runway for when you narrow down your choices to a few. You get to strut your stuff on the catwalk in a beautiful wedding gown. I would go to this store just for that experience. They have spacious, comfortable, and private fitting rooms with fantastic lighting. The staff is fabulous and very hands on. On your first visit, they encourage you to pick 10-15 dresses to get an idea of what you want. I can’t remember for sure, but I think they book the appointment for about 1.5 hrs, so you get a lot of time.

You should book in advance, but I got a last minute appointment for 4:00 pm on a Sunday. It was really quiet and I felt I didn’t have to shove people out of the way to look at dresses. They have a fantastic selection and all the samples are varied in size so if something is not your exact size, the consultant will clip it into place and help make it fit.

The downside was that the dresses were all really expensive. They had some samples, but even those were above my budget (~$1,000). I did find a sample discontinued dress that I liked in pristine condition. I tried to negotiate a price, but it was pretty non-negotiable. Their markup is quite high. Sadly, the consultant’s demeanor changed a lot when she realized I wasn’t able to afford even a sample dress at the price they were offering. So I left without buying the dress.

FYI, this is the dress I considered. It was a Watters gown, but since it’s discontinued, I could only find images of it on online shops. It was hand embroidered with floral/swirls on the top part of the bodice, and there was embroidery on the back bustling. The color wasn’t the best - it was in rum pink. I did not want a white dress, but preferred something along the lines of ivory.

David’s Bridal - Olympia, Washington (National Chain)

I know this is pretty faux-pas, but I wanted to see for myself what was so horrible about David’s. Plus, it would be a great basis for comparison.

I had a late evening appointment here. They are open until about 8PM so it’s great after work. I hear it’s mobbed on the weekends.

When you arrive, they make you fill out an extensive registration card. Make sure you check off the box that rejects all their direct mail and email, otherwise they start massively spamming. After you register, you are given about three catalogs and asked to flag the dresses you want. I sort of liked this process because I didn’t have to go scour the racks and through piles of dresses.

The consultant was actually very helpful. I told her what I liked and she flipped through the catalogs with me and made suggestions. She warned me about a few dresses that might have details that I wasn’t aware of. I tried on several. My favorite was a champagne trimmed, corseted dress with pickups.

Their prices are really reasonable, but quality isn’t going to be the same as some other designers– though you wouldn’t know this unless you’re wearing the dress. I had initially gone in to try this dress since it was so similar to my Lazaro dreamboat, but it just didn’t look right on me. The only thing I really disliked about the dresses is that you had to slip on a very itchy crinoline and I started sweating immediately (it was February) when I had the dresses on! Probably the polyester in the crinoline lining.

Despite their reputation, it wasn’t a bad experience at all. It was actually quite pleasant– they didn’t try to push anything on me and they were very extremely helpful and accommodating. So the moral? Don’t listen to the rumors! David’s Bridal is worth a shot if you’re shopping for a dress on a budget.

to be continued…

Is David’s Bridal really faux-pas??? I know I’ve heard some stores are really terrible, but I think it’s just the luck of the draw which branch you get. I would agree that the quality of some of their dresses aren’t as good as major designers but they now have a lines of desiger dresses (oleg cassini and monica luo (sp?)) which I think are higher quality than the regular DB line. They are definitly worth checking out because they do have a quite a large selection, the prices are very reasonable, AND they have a selection of sizes. So you can actually get INTO the dresses - for all us ladies larger than a size 6 sample!

have you looked at the Marisa gowns?
http://www.marisabridals.com/

they do a lot of copies and they do them in silk– very well finished. They have a copy of the Amsale dress with the blue sash that you mentioned in the first post… my friend got that one for her wedding and i bought a marisa as my second gown (you know, the one I ACTUALLY wore–lol!) it was beautiful, and i got tons of compliments on it!

I actually like the David’s Bridal shops. The one at South Coast Metro (Costa Mesa) is pretty good, and I have a few friends that have scored some really spectacular gowns there for a good price. I agree with peanut, not all of us can fit into a sample size 6.

when i was looking for my dress i also stopped by La Belle’s Elaine. They were nice and helpful. I, myself went over there for an experience. I found a Vera Wang dress for decent price ($3000), but i didn’t get it since it’s not around my budget.

Did you stop by at Demetrio’s? There’s one in Southcenter Mall (Tukwila) and there’s also one in Bellevue. They have a pretty dress for really good price.

I got my dress at David’s Bridal. The customer service wasn’t great, but I got a dress in my budget and I was able to try on my actual size. Both big plusses!

Peanut and Reila: I had a really great experience and David’s and want to urge readers to go because I received good service and found a wide selection. I didn’t end up buying just because I didn’t find anything I loved. I did try and Oleg Cassini, but it wasn’t really my style. The quality was better than the standard DB line. You’re right in that they also had great options for sizes. Every dress I wanted to try was available in my size.

Sharon: Demetrios was one of the stores I didn’t get to try, but I’ve heard they have great selection too!

Elle: Thanks for the Marisa link! I have seen their gowns in magazines and they photograph very well.

Ugh. South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa was AWFUL. They don’t know what they’re doing, didn’t know their product and were unsure about sizes for their gowns.

I’m a bigger gal, and when I saw a dress that was a certain size in their catalog and online, they said, “No, we don’t carry that size, EVER.”

I had an appointment and they were rude and disrespectful. (We don’t sell to FAT brides, mentality) I then visited the DB in Santa Ana, and where they weren’t rude, they were pushy and another bride came first (remember, I had an appointment, too). They called my house so many times I had to disconnect the phone and I checked off the “don’t mail/email/call me” box.

They’re quality is bad. And Alfred Angelo was my ultimate store of choice. Bigger selection, bigger sizes, professional staff who work with you, better sales and the dresses are of a much higher quality then David’s Bridal.

I think in general, its best to go to a local chat board to find out if your David’s is any good or not. Like the poem, “when it is good, its very very good; but when it is bad, it is horrid”!

The only thing I would warn people about is something David tries to advertise - being super-convenient for bridesmaids gowns if you have ‘maids all over the country. Because there are these horrible branches, it often is not convenient at all. I got the run-around from my branch when I called to make sure they had the dress for me to try on, they were just like “of course we have it” Got there (NOT easy where I live) and spent an hour looking for it - with and without consultant help. Finally they looked it up in the computer and nope! Don’t have it after all. Nor could I try on one of their other dresses for sizing. Nor would they give me sizing measurements. I just had to guess. Good thing I went all the way down there!!

And this sort of service seems to be very common for individual bridesmaids coming in. I’ve heard its different if a group goes in with the bride.

Just an FYI!

Thank you so much for saying something nice about David’s Bridal!!! I got my dress there and had a great experience with them. I’m so tired of hearing all of the snobbery against them. It gets old and though I can understand people’s perspectives I feel like the one-upmanship with bridal shops is getting a little out of hand.

I loved La Belle Elaine’s, too - it’s too bad that your salesgirl’s personality changed a little when she realized you couldn’t afford their dresses. I fell in love with a sample and they were actually willing to negotiate on the price - and the salesgirl was quite honest, showing me all of the flaws on the dress and telling me how easy/difficult she thought they would be to fix. I didn’t end up buying there, but I loved the place.

I tried on that exact first dress at Bellvue Bridal Boutique when I was visiting my brother last year (I had the same reaction). I loved the dresses at Bridal Garden and had a good experience at the Demetrios Outlet while I was in WA.
