Michael’s Peacock Collection

October 29th, 2007 @ 1:51 pm by Mrs. Magnolia

Mr. Magnolia and I love to spend our Sundays poring over the newspaper. By mid-afternoon, it’s inevitable that the various sections will be strewn about the living room in complete disarray.

This Sunday, after we both devoured everything we could about a particular football victory, I moved on to the advertisements. Pre-wedding, I always went straight for Target, Best Buy, Cost Plus World Market, and the much-anticipated seasonal Ikea booklet. I still browse those weekly circulars, but now I’ve added craft stores like JoAnn’s and Michael’s to the mix.

About halfway through the Michael’s ad was the following picture:

Now, I am absolutely not ready to start decorating for Christmas…but the peacock wreath piqued my interest.

I think feathers are a fabulous and unexpected addition to wedding decor, as seen here:

Fab, right?

Here’s the thing - I can totally see a couple of these wreaths adorning the front doors of a church for a sophisticated, elegant setting.

You’d have to be careful, because I think a peacock theme could go overboard quickly and veer toward slightly tacky. But if you’ve got bridesmaids in emerald green or dark teal, and maybe a thank you card like this:

(from weddingpaperdivas.com)

…well, that just might work!

What do you guys think? Feathers…yay or nay?

I love those wreaths! I’m racking my brains trying to think of some place I could hang on in our apartment without my cat getting to it and ripping it to shreds…

I just did a board with a peacock inspiration! A few feathers go a long way, but add a great touch. The blue and green palette turned out great. Drop me a line if you want to see it. I’d be happy to share.
p.s. Go Dawgs!!!! That field rush was awesome.

The Knot featured a peacock feathered theme.

YAY to peacock feathers! Especially when you had a touch or RED! Yummy! Love that color combo!

Thanks for sharing! I’ve got to plan a trip to Michael’s now!

I was thinking the same thing about the peacock wreath! Even an initial in the middle! So pretty!

I am in LOVE with those feather wreaths!

Too bad my fiance has put the kibosh on all feather elements for the wedding. He has been very good about us having more colors than normal, spending more than budgeted on catering, but apparently feathers is where he draws the line.

I can’t believe I neglected to mention this…the peacock decorations were in the Michael’s flyer because they are 25% off! Woot!

While I don’t plan to incorporate them into our wedding, they are absolutely lovely, and I may go look at the wreath for our new front door!

Lynn, I’m considering a blue/green or peacock themed wedding and would love to see you board. Could you please share? Thanks!

In some cultures, peacock feathers are considered to be extremely unlucky…

mmm….i’m not a big feathers fan for wedding decor, but maybe a very minimalist feathers approach could work.

p.s. go gators…LOL!! ;0)

Love, love, love them! I’m crazy about peacocks because of a story I once heard about how they are a symbol of focusing on the positive in life — they are proud of their beautiful feathers instead of dwelling on their ugly feet. Terrible paraphrase, but hopefully you get the idea…. (Come to think of it, not a bad way to approach a marriage!)

Angel says:

I’m not a big fan, but I guess their pretty popular this year. Maybe as long as it’s not overdone? (of the tree and the wreath, I like the wreath better)

mrspikake says:

YAY for feathers! Not just peacock but also ostrich. I was thinking that ostrich feathers fanned out would be a nice alternative to flower bouquets for bridesmaids. I also have a magazine clipping from a past wedding mag, I don’t remember which one, for inspiration.

I love, love, love peacock feathers. I want that wreath. They actually are selling one like that at Marshalls…

I just have to say congrats on Georgia’s win over Florida! I have a particular loathing for Florida because their coach left Utah in the lurch, so this weekend’s result was awesome! Way to go!

BaghdadBride says:

I like the wreath a lot but in a lot of western cultures peacock feathers are unlucky (evil eye) so it’s possible some guests might comment or be curious why you’d use it for a wedding…on the other hand in a lot of asian cultures it’s usually a good luck symbol.

I got my wedding colors from peacock feathers!! I will be using peacocks feathers and swords in bouquets for me and my bridesmaids. I will also use a peacock eye behind the flower that i choose to use for the groom and groomsmen instead of greenery. I will also have peacock feather wreaths on the church doors. I am so excited. I Love peacock feathers!! Miss Magnolia did the ad say that they sell those already made?

I wanted to do Peacock feathers as well, since I recently got engaged and am looking for a theme that is different yet classy. I have this huge bouquet of feathers in my living room, which inspired the idea.

Interestingly enough, I work as a Government Affairs Director in Indiana. I guess great minds think alike!
