Miss Magnolia’s Hair Trial

October 31st, 2007 @ 2:28 pm by Mrs. Magnolia

Monday night, Mr. Magnolia and I headed over to his cousin’s house for dinner… and a hair styling session. See, Cousin’s wife used to be a stylist, and she maintains a small side business doing wedding and prom hair. I love the idea of keeping wedding day beauty “all in the family” (as I mentioned before, my cousin will be doing my makeup), so I asked her if she would be willing to do my updo and that of any bridesmaids who want their hair up.

I’m going for a loose curly updo… kind of a challenge with my stick straight hair, which is very resistant to holding any type of curl. (Seriously, I got a perm when I was ten, and I woke up the next morning with straight hair. It was ridiculous.)

Here’s one of the pictures I gave her for inspiration:

And here’s the final product!

From the top:

I thought she did a great job, and I can’t wait to see it on the big day! What do you think?

I agree with Mrs. Bluebell! It’s perfect and much better than your inspiration photo! I love how soft and natural it looks.

I love the look from the top. I have to say, I think I’d like the veil better placed on the top of your head over the hair — this way when you take the veil off it will be a big “reveal” in a way. Just my two cents.

Very nice! I love the romantic feeling of the loose curls.

I also wonder if it would look better to wear the veil above the bun, though? Maybe it’s worth a try?

I have stick straight hair too and I wore a similar style to this at my wedding. My curls lasted all night! The trick, according to my stylist, was to style my hair dirty… meaning I didn’t wash it the day of my wedding! I had my hair done for my rehearsal and he filled it with product. I combed it out that night and slept on it. The next day he sprayed it again (though not quite as much) and curled my whole head of hair in tight ringlets. He put it up in a loose updo and then sprayed and sprayed with hair spray. It still looked great 10 hours later. It took several rounds of shampoo to get the hairspray out, but I’ve recovered now!

I also think you should put the veil on the top instead of below. It’s much more delicate.

Love it!

I have no interest in getting an MBA or other higher education - but I would LOVE to go to cosmetology school. Some people look at me funny - but I’d love to be trained to create prom and wedding updo’s, even cute haircuts. (not sure if I’d enjoy coloring!) Maybe one day I’ll have the time and money to pursue the hobby!

Ha! I can totally relate to hair that says “no way, nuh uh, not going to curl no matter how much you want it.” I got a perm in 7th grade which stuck for a couple weeks but I had to wait a while before getting a 2nd one and that one worked. On the flag team in high school I put all sorts of hair goo in my hair, slept in curlers and still by the time of the show, my locks were nearly straight again. oh well. I applaud you for trying out the curls. I think the “do” looks fantastic!

I also have the problem of stick straight hair but wanting something curly.

How well did that particular hairdo stay in?

I think its great… I love that is still flowy and natural (not stuck to your head with hairspray) Its a great do! Can’t wait to see it with the whole wedding ensemble ;)

After reading Mrs. Onion and Mrs. Radish’s comments, I also think you should give the veil on top of the updo a shot. I think your hair would look great like that as well.
