About Mrs. Penguin

Designer Lusting: Jim Hjelm

November 1st, 2007 @ 11:58 am by Mrs. Penguin

I’ve loved Jim Hjelm dresses from the moment I picked up my first bridal magazine. I knew I wanted to try their designs on first, and I instantly fell in love with the one I ended up purchasing. It pretty much embodies everything I’ve wanted in a gown. Interesting neckline, sleek design, and a nice mix between traditional and modern. Here it is on the (entirely too perfect) model:

There were so many Jim Hjelm dresses that I loved in the current and all the past collections, that I knew I had to shop at a store that carried their line. Best of all, I knew that even their priciest dresses were in my price range, so I wouldn’t have to go through the agony of finding that “perfect” dress and finding out that it busted my budget. Jim Hjelm does a great job with mixing fabrics, so if you like a little lace or a little tulle, you can get it without being overwhelmed by one fabric.

The designers pay as close attention to the back of the dress as to the front. I’m not a huge fan of buttons or visible zipper seams, so I really appreciate side zip gowns and well hidden zips and clasps.

Here are some details from their newest Fall 2008 Collection:

Do/did you have designer lust? Did you end up purchasing a gown from their collection?

Monique Lhuillier. LOVE HER.
I’d love to wear her, but she’s a little (a lot!) out of my price range. It doesn’t stop me from pining over her designs. :)

After looking at magazines, I really loved Claire Pettibone and Monique Lhullier’s designs. But they were too rich for my blood, so I didn’t even bother to try them on.

Ashley says:

Always loved Vera Wang- ever since I can remember. So I had to get one - and I managed to find one that wasnt outrageously priced- yeah!

I love the Monique Lhuillier’s use of lace in most of her gowns. I also LOVE, LOVE Le Spose di Gio gowns. They’re so chic and elegant.

Lynn says:

I had one I loved but sadly when I actually put the dresses on they looked terrible on me. They just did not hang right on my frame. I ended up with something completely different, but I looked beautiful and saved about $400. You just never know until you try it on.

reese says:

I’m a Monique Lhuillier fan too!! But her dresses would cost more than my wedding. =( I’ll be using my mom’s gown, though, and restyling it similar to a Monique Lhuillier. I can’t wait!!

I love Jim Hjelm dresses! I also love Vera Wang…but I definitely won’t be getting one of those. Lela Rose, whom Mrs. Bee posted about on this site awhile back, is another one of my favorites.

I too was lusting after Jim Hjelm dresses initially. I carried around a picture of the one in the first row, second in from the left. I ended up getting one very similar. I could never find a bridal shop that carried the designer (they usually only carried the bridesmaid dresses - boo). Your dress is gorgeous!!

I just called a bridal salon who is having a Jim Hjelm trunk show (Fontana in Scarsdale, NY 11-08-11/11 if anyone is interested) , the lady who answered the phone said the dresses are about $2000 - $3500.

I have a Pnina Tornai lust! Before it was Pronovias, and then Atelier Aimiée.
I haven’t purchased a dress yet, but if my budget has any say, I will never see a Pnina again. wah!

I’m with you Miss Penguin - I love Jim Hjelm dresses, and Alvina Valenta. Although they were out of my budget - I used their styles to find my more budget friendly dress!!

I just wore a Jim Hjelm (8663) for my wedding two weeks ago. I fell in love with it right from the beginning and kept trying to talk myself out of it due to the price, but every other dress I tried on just paled by comparison. So I knew I wouldn’t be happy with anything else, and I got it. I looooooooved it so much. Comfortable and simple and I got so many compliments on it. His designs are timeless and classic.

Stacie says:

I LOVE Jim Hjelm, his designs are amazing. I already picked my bridesmaid dresses out and now believe I found my dress…the dress is in the new Spring 2008 line (8803). Not the style I had originally looked at but it is gorgeous and I have to have it. If anyone knows where it may be available let me know (NJ/NY area).

Jamie says:

I am in love with JH dresses… I alas can not afford one of his wedding dresses… But I am willing to settle… I was looking at his BM dresses and I found a style that was so perfect for my theme (40’s-50’s jazz era…)
what is nice is most of his BM dresses come in white or ivory. *isn’t he wonderful*

I couldn’t figure out how to put a picture up but here is the description:

Style: #JH5680
Moss satin A-line gown, V-neckline, empire bodice, open V-back with pleating and bow detail, full sweep train.
this dress was from the 2006 collection

Andrea says:

Wow this is all new to me as well. I have been searching and searching trying to find styles that catches my eye. I don’t like any ol thing. Then I came across JH and I was thrilled to see his work. I was like finally I see something I love from both bridesmaid dresses and bridal gowns. The only problem is that most of my bridesmaids only want to spend up to $200 on a dress… So does anyone know where I can get a good priced JH dress or even a designer who is similar but less pricey? If so please do sheare! Thanks

I agree. I love JH. Anne Barge has pretty stuff too. But, those are out of my price range too. I’ve seen stuff from Eden Bridals that catches my eye, but maybe less expensive. Does anyone know a price range on Eden Bridals dresses?
