About Miss Lovebird

Mr. Lovebird got a little shy when I told him I was going to write this post, so I hope you all appreciate it. :)

On January 19, 2001 at the crack of dawn, Mr. Lovebird and I were pulling an all-nighter on the phone. So high school right? Well, we had just graduated high school six months earlier! Anyway, he asks, “Want to grab breakfast?” It was still dark outside when Mr. Lovebird hopped on a train from Chelsea to arrive at my doorstep under an umbrella. Even though the diner I loved was 35 block away, we decided to walk there in the rain. After breakfast, he walked me back home, asked if he could see me again that night, I said, “yes” and we said our goodbyes.

That night, the two of us met up at Apple near NYU. During dinner, he whips out a box with a white gold ring inside! Yes, a ring! Who does that?? Hehe, so he shyly asks, “Will you go out with me?” At this point it’s pretty obvious we just graduated high school because I don’t think people really ask that question in the adult dating world. I was shocked to say the least, but said “yes”. Inside the ring, he had engraved, “MAY BE MINE.”

As you can see, the “MAY BE MINE” has worn off a little after all these years.

From that day on, I never took the ring off. That is, until almost five and half years later when he gave me this.

If it’s not clear, it says, “MAY, Be mine Forever”

With this inside!

In the words of one of our favorite shows, Best Week Ever, “UPGRADE!”

I haven’t worn the old ring, since receiving the new one, until recently. I’ve asked Mr. Lovebird if we could incorporate the old ring into our new wedding rings, but he shot down that idea because it’s white gold and he wants platinum rings to match the engagement ring. Maybe we can melt it down to make something our first born can wear. Any suggestions on how we can incorporate it into our wedding?

You could have it melted in a charm to hang on your bouquet or garter.

i have a ring also that i got on our ‘100′ days… its the same simple white gold band with something engraved inside (side story: i was actually tricked! my brother ruined the secret by blatantly asking my ring size so i thought it was coming for our 3 months so i was a little sad when i didnt get anything!) but i always wonder what i’ll do with it later on… hmmm…

i actually still wear the ring my FI got me over five years ago, but on my right hand. it looks odd, because that one is yellow gold, my engagement ring is white gold… but it’s on separate hands so i’m fine with it.

I’ve seen some rings that were one metal on the outside, and had a lining of another metal on the inside. Would it be possible to either melt down the white gold ring and have it put on the inside of a platinum ring, or even just build the platinum on top of the white gold so the engraving isn’t lost?

I wouldn’t want to melt such a sweet family item down, especially since it has a great story and engraving. Maybe it could be a future family member’s engagement ring? But then, I’m sentimental over the things that get passed down through the family.

Maybe you could use it as a charm on your bouquet, or wear it on your other hand (at the end of the ceremony, you’ll have your entire relationship history on your hands!), tie it to the ring bearer’s pillow instead of fake rings as a place of honor in your ceremony, or on a necklace for your reception.

I think this would be a great story to include in the programs or loves story somehow. I agree, not many people give a “going steady” ring anymore.

My DH gave me a white gold band when we were dating as well. My ering is platinum and I was getting an eternity band for my wedding ring, but we needed a plain band to incorporate into our ceremony. (We did an interfaith ceremony, and for the Jewish ring exchange you need a simple band with nothing on it).

I used that ring in the ceremony and now I wear all 3 rings. Eternity band then the plain band and then my ering. I love the way it looks. The white gold is a little yellowed after 7 years, but I am planning to have it redipped eventually.

Awww….that’s too adorable!

Mr Peony gave me a promise ring for our 1-year anniversary. I still have it, and I plan on giving it to our future daughter (if we don’t have any I’ll give it to a girl in the family)

A tear for how sweet this story is. How romantic, and I agree with Reilabird, you should have this phrase be prevalent somewhere in your ceremony/reception!

is your first name May?
the engraving is really sweet- because it could also mean “maybe mine” like he’s hoping you will be- and hoping you will be forver. Its quite sweet- as both your first name and a young boys hopeful wish.

how sweet! though the bf didn’t give me a ring until our 1-year anniversary, when he did ask me to be his gf i remember thinking how much it sounded like a proposal, much like mr. lovebird.

i like the ideas of tying it your your bouquet or using it as a stand in on the ringbearer pillow too.

You could melt it down, add some more gold, and make HIS wedding ring with your own hands in one fun-filled, romantic day, guided to a professional finish by a qualified jeweler.
You could do it in secret if you wish! Look at http://www.AWeddingRingExperience.com
