The Good And Bad Way To Curl

November 1st, 2007 @ 10:56 am by Mrs. Caramel

In my vendor reviews, I wrote that I didn’t really like the way my hair vendor did my bridesmaids’ hair.  I was looking over some pictures and found a great picture that shows why I didn’t like their hair.  When hair is curled wrong, it can look flopped or look like it was curled the wrong way.  Here’s an example of what I mean:

You can see how some strands look straight (which means they either missed some strands or they didn’t curl it right) and some of the curls are awkward.

Here is a picture of good curls. I got my hair done for my bridal shower and here’s a shot from the back:

You can see that even the strays are curled and that everything is curled the same direction.

Here’s some guidance for how to correctly curl hair - make sure that if you curl your hair one way, keep curling it in the same direction. This may sound like common sense, but you wouldn’t believe how difficult this can be! Some people forget in the middle of the curling process. Also, if you happen to see one of your bridesmaid’s hair curled like it is in the first picture, bring your own curling iron and re-curl it later! It should not look like that! (And you should definitely not pay $35 for your hair to look this way! grrr…)

Good luck!

oh my goodness! my bridal party also had their hair done at Hair Day. all of my BMs brought in pictures of what they wanted but i think the girl doing the hair only knew how to do the same awkward curling job so all of their hair styles looked exactly the same with those weird looking curls. i wondered why the curls in their hair didn’t look right but now i understand. definitely was not worth the 40 i paid for each BM’s hair.

Don’t think I would have noticed till you put an arrow to it. hm. good thing I don’t think any of my ladies will want their hair curled. what a hassle.

Maybe it’s because her hair in the picture is so dark, but I really can’t see anything wrong with the curls in the first picture.

Your curls from your bridal shower are gorgeous! Do you remember what size barrel your stylist used? Did she use just one size or alternate between different barrels?

I think you have good advice, but if you look closely at your hair, the curls are not going all the same direction. Your hair was curled in different directions (some curls go towards the right, some towards the left). I think the better point is to just find someone who knows how to do it correctly. Having hair curl in different directions actually is more interesting than it all going one way.

I love your curls from your shower. I wish my hair would do that

I LOVE how your hair is curled in the bridal shower pic — was it done with a curling iron? How did you get it to stay like that? Whenever I try to curl my hair (long, straight asian hair) it ends up straight after an hour, even with hairspray!

I also wish my hair would curl like that. I probably would not have noticed the miscurled (yes, I made up a word) hair in the first picture w/o the arrow, but now that you’ve pointed it out and talked about it, I can see what you mean. My own hair usually ends up flipping out like that after I try to curl it myself… =\ I won’t be doing my own hair for my wedding ;-)

I agree with Trish - although, your hair is curled away from your face to the center back of your head. both sides’ curls face the same direction, though.

Great tips! Thanks! I have been curling my hair a lot lately since I got the new Bed Head curling iron so this advice will come in handy! I love your curls from your shower!

I really don’t see anything wrong with the first picture. Too tight curls going in the same direction look like a old fashion doll hair.

I also agree with Trish. For the most natural looking curls, your sylist should vary both the direction of the curls and the size of the curling iron. Of course, some people prefer a more uniform look.
