Tips For A Great E-Pic Session

November 1st, 2007 @ 3:09 pm by Mrs. Daffodil

We got our engagement photos back yesterday, courtesy of the amaaaazing Scott Robert. We were truly speechless! They were exactly what we had hoped for! They capture such wonderful memories for us and we will treasure these for years to come!

I thought I’d share a few pics with you all and offer some tips on how to have a great engagement photo session. Other than hiring an awesome photographer like Scott (of course!), there are a few things we did that I believe really allowed us to make the most out of the session, not to mention making the pictures extra special!

1. Selecting places that are very “you”. Mr. D and I really wanted our e-pics to capture many memories that were super special to us. We chose places where we hung out all the time and that were significant to us. By doing so, I feel that the pictures took on a deeper dimension. Plus, we felt extremely comfortable and relaxed!

2. Know what you want and have a plan in place. Many couples opt to show up the day of their e-pic session and look to their photographer for all the direction. While that definitely works, I really believe that knowing what you want and conveying that clearly to your photographer will maximize your time and only help in making the session (and your photos) even better! Whether you want pictures that are romantic, silly, or fun, it gives the photographer something to work with and can inspire their creativity. For us, we wanted everything to be very sweet and fun and also very personal, and we had a clear plan of all the places we wanted to hit in what order.

3. Wearing comfortable but very “you” clothing. Your engagement session should capture you and your FI in the everyday, and should also be representative of your personalities! Wear what you usually wear, perhaps your favorite outfit. Pick a couple different sets of clothing with different looks (i.e. casual, smart, or formal, etc.).

Other clothing tips: Try to stick to solid colors, and maybe lightly textured if you really want. You want to stay away from stripes, logos, or designs on your clothing…the focus of the pics should be on you! Also, try to coordinate between you and your FI and select colors and outfits that go well together.

4. Wearing comfortable shoes! Chances are, you’ll be running around a lot! Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, so that you can keep up with the photographer and not waste a single moment!

5. Setting aside time to get ready. Take time to get ready… you want to look nice because you’re going to have these pictures forever! Also, have all your hair and make-up done before the session begins. You don’t want to waste any session time getting ready… you should be using that time to take pictures! I got my nails done the day before, and we picked out our clothes that night as well. We set aside our whole morning to get ready, which turned out to be a good decision because we ended up taking the whole morning! I got my hair blown dry by my hairdresser and had my make-up done, while Mr. D got a trim.

6. Be spontaneous and flexible, and most of all, have fun! Some of the best pictures from our session came when we were in between locations, when a certain spot or angle just happened to catch our photographer’s eye. We also experimented with lots of different poses, which felt a little goofy at the time but turned out awesome on film! Be flexible enough to allow your photographer’s creativity to come out, and most of all, have FUN!

Thanks for the tips! I would second the one about shooting in places that are significant to the couple, since that would obviously give the pictures a more personal feel. You guys look great!
