Faux Gateaux

November 2nd, 2007 @ 2:56 pm by Mrs. Penguin

I always wanted to have a few faux layers of cake… mostly because I love the look of big beautiful cakes, and since our reception will only be for 100 people, our cake couldn’t possibly be very large. I didn’t want leftovers, nor did I want to pay the extra $5 a slice for cake that no one was going to eat. I’ve already booked a baker, but I stumbled across this website, and I thought the idea was great.

Lots of couples opt to have a small “show” cake and have sheet cake in the back, but if you’re looking to have a larger looking cake on a budget, consider cakerental.com.

What is it made out of?

cakerental.com cakes are made out of foam, and decorated with real fondant. You can choose from a number of pre-designed cakes, or you can start with a blank cake of varying shapes and sizes, and have one custom decorated. Here are some of their “blank canvases”:

Will we be able to “cut the cake”?

Yes. There is a small section of the bottom tier that you can add real cake to on the day of your wedding. Once the ceremonial cut has taken place, the cake is wheeled away and sheet cake (that you provide) is served to the guests.

How much does it cost?

Pre-designed cakes from their gallery cost $100. Custom, basic 3 tiered cakes run $150. Each additional tier costs $75 each. Here are some of their great pre-designed cakes:

Do they ship?

Yes. cakerental.com is based in Michigan, but they ship across the U.S.

Here is some of their work:
Faux cakes are not for everyone, but I think they are a great idea! Would you ever consider a faux cake?

Wow! What a great idea!! Doubt they’ll ship to Mexico though.

I personally think this is silly.

I am torn with this idea. I have discussed with my baker the possibility of doing a show cake as I love the look of fondant - but not the taste or cost. My fiance is hesitant to serve sheet cake as he doesn’t want to cheat our guests. I can’t decide!

I like it! I love the look of a biggg cake but doubt I’d have enough people to want to eat it… I’m actually not a cake fan… I prefer other desserts but anyway… I think beautiful cakes are too pretty to eat so what a great compromise!

ooh thanks for this! I’d absolutely consider a fake cake! FI doesn’t like fondant or buttercream, so he’s already said that he probably wouldn’t eat our wedding cake! This seems like a better idea. We can order the fake cake for show, and just cut up a sheet cake in the back. It probably would save us some money too!

Ooh, some of my cake was faux! It just seemed like a waste to make cake enough for 700 people when only 125 were coming. I think the center layers were something covered in whipped cream; the largest layer and the top layers were all real. And delicious!

What an awesome idea, who’d a thunk! I had a 3 layer cake because to me that’s what a wedding cake was supposed to look like! Plus I had a groom’s cake, since I was excited to surprise my groom with a golf themed cake just for him! We only had 50 guests!!! :) Oh well!

Most of the leftover’s have been in our deep freezer and we’ve enjoyed eating on it!!

I want to buy myself a fake cake form so I can practice some decorating skills!!!

I love how the website mentions that 3 Twinkies fit perfectly into the cutout section for you to eat from! Mmm, Twinkies…

I went to a wedding this summer that had a fake cake. I didn’t realize it until a server brought the bride and groom a slice on a plate to feed each other and then the rest of us were served cake without “the cake” being touched! Although the cake was pretty, the way they went about it was unimpressive.

If you are having a completely fake cake, be sure to wheel it out before everyone is served so it doesn’t look odd.

we’re having a five layer faux cake, but the top is real -and delicious! The top will be enough to serve the wedding party, and the guests have their choice of other cakes and desserts that the caterer is concocting. It saves us money, allows us to have a a bigger, fancier cake, and by having a larger choice of desserts our guests have…well, a choice!

Interestingly, our cake person won’t do faux layers — it’s just more work for her in the end because she has to do double duty by decorating the faux cake and the sheet cake (though the sheet cake is obviously less demanding). Other bakers I interviewed also didn’t knock off an appreciable amount by doing a few fake layers.

My FH and I are doing a fake cake. We opted for this from day one. We’re having about 100 people and wanted a “large” and nice looking cake, too.

We went with http://www.fakethecake.com, which is local in SoCal and they deliver and set it up for you.

They have a lot of great styles, the cake looks real and Stephanie there is GREAT!.

I had a faux cake at my wedding and it worked out beautifully! Two real layers and 3 styrofoam ones and now we’re not eating left over cake for the next three years!! I would recommend it to any bride.

I second the faux cake! Mine was, and we saved so much money! Many cake bakers do faux layers and one real layer to cut into, just ask. My aunt ended up making the sheet cakes that were served. They also matched the cake color of the “real layer” of the faux cake so it would look like the cake guests were eating matched the faux cake. But in the end, it didn’t really matter. Guests don’t pay *that* much attention!
