Mr. Bubblegum and I will forever disagree on how we started dating. The basic concept is there, but who liked who when and where is all up in the air. As part of our wedding website, we each decided to tell our side of the story.
Her Story
It was the first night of college, and I was out looking for friends. There was one room right across the hall from the common room that seemed to be brimming, so I made my way. After many introductions and too many names to faces, I took a seat at one of the desks and rudely started playing Tetris on the graphing calculator that sat there. After setting the highest score that calculator had ever seen (it’s been a while, so my memory on that might be murky), I noticed a letter on the desk addressed to “Willis.” I thought I had met a “Will,” but could that skinny little shy kid sitting in the middle of the bed really have a name as bold as “Willis”? As such, I exclaimed, “Is your name really Willis?!?!?!?!?”
Over the next two months, “Willis” became quite a fixture in my life. He was almost always around me and my roommates, and we liked it that way. He was funny and easy-going. He was even willing (eager?) to shop Downtown Crossing with 5 girls. One night, on AIM (because that’s where the real romance happens), as the two of us commiserated about our nonexistent love lives, he joked (typed), “Maybe the two of us should go out.” To this, I responded (typed), “if you’re going to ask me out, you have to do it in person.” I then stomped over to his room (all of 20 feet away, and yes, we had been talking on AIM), sat on his bed, and waited for him to ask me. Several awkward mutters later, we had planned a date for Saturday, October 27, 2001.
His Story
My roommate and I had finished unpacking in our dorm room and had just finished the scavenger hunt that our RA had made for everyone that lived on the 6th floor of Tower C in Warren Towers. There was a meeting for everyone on the floor for a meet and greet. We all introduced ourselves and said where we were from. There was a group of three girls that all grew up in the same town and were all living in the same room. When they explained this they all started giggling. I immediately decided I didn’t like them. I mean, come on, you’re supposed to meet new people in college!
Later that night there were 6 or 7 people hanging out in my room and one of the girls from the group came in and started playing Tetris on my calculator. I informed her she need not bother as my high score could not be beaten. (It had taken me an entire 90 minute physics class in high school to reach it). My dislike for this girl increased as she didn’t really talk to anyone, she just sat in my seat playing my calculator without even asking! Then she kept laughing at me because she couldn’t believe my name was “Willis”. My future wife ladies and gentlemen!
Being an opportunist, I got over my dislike for the group of three when I realized that if I was friends with one of them, it would make me friends with three girls. Good odds to me! Miss Bubblegum and I became good friends as we would explore Boston and work on homework over the first couple of months of school. One night we were arguing about some stupid issue over AIM, and I joked that it sounded like we were a couple. She then asked me if I was asking her out (which I wasn’t), but I figured I wouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth. The rest is history…
Anyone else’s FI experience this kind of memory loss?!?
