Post-Wedding Hair

November 6th, 2007 @ 2:14 pm by Mrs. Lovebird

I was actually planning on writing a post about this topic before someone brought it up on the Beehive.

Many brides like to grow their hair out for their wedding - I am one of them. But after the wedding day has come and gone and you feel the need for a shorter hairdo, what are your options? Instead of just going to the salon and having the stylist give you a makeover while all your pretty strands float slowly to the ground, you might want to consider donating your hair for a good cause.

One in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in her lifetime* and nearly 60% of women regard hair loss as the single worst side effect of cancer treatment.**

*Cancer Facts & Figures 2007, American Cancer Society.
**Cancer Practice: Journal of the American Cancer Society, November 2001.

Early this summer, I chopped off a good chunk of my hair and donated it to Pantene Beautiful Lengths.

Recently, Academy-Award winner, Hilary Swank, cut off nine inches of her hair to donate to this program on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

I did my research before I went into the salon because I heard rumors from my MOH that some of these organizations weren’t as good as they seemed. I think the organization most people have heard of with regards to hair donation has been Locks of Love. Although I completely admire what this organization does, I felt some of their practices weren’t as noble. When you google “locks of love” one of the first articles that pops up is this one. They were basically accused of selling surplus donations for profit and do not give out every wig for free, but actually charge juvenile cancer patients according to their parent’s income level. I’m not sure whether the allegations are true are not, but after my research, I felt Pantene Beautiful Lengths would make better use of my donation.

Here are the requirements for Pantene Beautiful Lengths:

“In order to make the most beautiful, realistic and durable wigs, donated hair must meet the requirements below.

  • Donated hair must be a minimum of 8 inches long (measure hair from just above the elastic band of the ponytail to the ends).
  • Wavy/curly hair texture is fine—you may straighten hair to measure.
  • Hair should be freshly washed and completely dry, without any styling products.
  • Hair may be colored with vegetable dyes, rinses and semi-permanent dyes. It cannot be bleached, permanently colored or chemically treated.
  • Hair may not be more than 5 percent gray.

In appreciation of the sacrifice that a hair donation requires, Pantene Beautiful Lengths only accepts hair it knows can be used for its intended purposes.

As Pantene Beautiful Lengths wigs are created, they are distributed for free through select American Cancer Society wig banks across the country. Women facing cancer can find out about the availability of a Pantene Beautiful Lengths wig by calling the American Cancer Society at 1-877-227-1596. The Society can also help callers with a number of resources providing educational and emotional support.”

I’m sure there are other worthwhile organizations out there that do similar things, and I would be happy to learn about them. I’ve made a personal commitment to donate my hair every chance I get and help out these cancer patients in one of the few ways I can. I encourage others out there to do the same if they are able to. Just think, maybe your contribution will help make a wig a bride will wear on her wedding day to make her look all the more beautiful.

This is the most wonderful post, I hope it inspires brides to donate! Thanks Miss L!

A more effective use of your resources would be to earmark a donation for women going through chemo. Most women don’t use wigs, and if they do, they use synthetic (eaiser to clean and care for, lighter).

I just wanted to point out that Locks of Love targets children that loses their hair with a medical condition called alopecia areata, not cancer patients. The money they raised from selling the unusable hair is to fund research for this medical condition.

Whether it’s donating hair to children, or cancer patients, or donating money for other charities, it’s all a good deed and more should be done. Kudos to you lovebird for posting about it. I like you with short hair and bangs!

This is great! I was planning to donate my post-wedding hair to Locks of Love. It’s nice to know there are other organizations.

I’ve been growing out my hair to donate to locks of love. I’m pretty sure they accept hair that’s been TR-ed (thermal reconditioned). Does anyone know?

I cut off 12 inches of my hair and donated to Pantene, as well. It was such a great feeling to know that my hair was going to help someone feel as beautiful as I felt when I had my hair. =)

AH! No fair, I’ve been planning a post exactly like this one, but I’m not cutting my hair until Dec.! I’m relieved to see your “after” turned out so well. I hope mine does because if it doesn’t I will never post it :D

I donated 11.5″ of hair the day before my engagement party — it was such a shock to everyone when I showed up with shoulder length hair (my mother didn’t even notice me at first)! Now if only it would hurry up and grow back so it can be long enough in time for the wedding…

“In fact, all three of the children’s charities sell excess hair — in particular, the short and the gray — to commercial wig makers to defray costs.”

nytimes summary of the organizations accepting hair donations:

it’s important to realize that the organizations giving wigs to kids have the strictest requirements (no highlights or other chemical treatment) and make custom wigs (more expensive).

I wish I could participate in this! I’m growing out my hair uber-long for the wedding and I plan to chop it all off afterwards– I would have a lot to give away. Unfortunately, my hair is permanently colored and highlighted :(

ocicats, check both orgs’ websites for the complete list of requirements and what disqualifies hair. It’s important to check b/c the article SP links to above mentions that 80% of the hair received is sold or dumped b/c it doesn’t meet standards. A lot of people take umbrage with this, but if they had read the guides, their hair wouldn’t have been “wasted.” (I said this in the boards, but, really, eww: who sends in moldy hair?!)

I’ve donated twice to Locks of Love and plan to donate once more after our wedding. Just FYI - color treated hair can still be sent to Pantene as long as it hasn’t been bleached. I know some people just dye their hair back to their natural color before cutting it off to donate it.

I did this and it was one of the toughest things I’ve ever done! I have always had short hair, until I decided to grow out may hair to donate. My hair couldn’t grow fast enough!

I donated my hair to Locks of Love my senior year of high school. I hope to donate it again to one of the organizations. Thanks for mentioning the Pantene program– I haven’t heard of it before. Another worthy hair donation organization is called Wigs 4 Kids. I haven’t decided yet which I will donate to, but I believe all three are worthy organizations!

I love your shorter hair! IMO you look better with short hair. =) Lucky you, you have a nice “after” pic. I donated my hair to Locks of Love about 5 years ago and my short ‘do was hideous! I hated it. =( I also did the half up hair when it was short too. =P
