The Long And Short Of It

November 8th, 2007 @ 11:25 am by Mrs. Toucan

Or, maybe just the short and shorter of it. :)

Since getting engaged, my favorite part of “researching” for our wedding is looking at bridal gowns. Even now, after already purchasing a dress, I often find myself browsing hundreds of pages of magazines and websites, ooh-ing and aah-ing over various designers. It’s my little guilty pleasure. :)

This morning I was browsing the recent Spring 2008 collections on The Knot, and I noticed how many designers are making short dresses now. Here are some of my faves:

Short dresses, in my opinion, have a certain air about them. While some can still look very refined and modern, I find that many of the short wedding dresses are fun, whimsical and flirty! I wouldn’t be surprised if many more brides started becoming short dress brides! (Mrs. Onion, looks like you’re ahead of the game!)

In addition to short dresses, it looks like wedding designers are coming out with mini dresses as well. Is it the coming of the mini-dress bride?!

While I actually like and would love to own these dresses (I do love mini-dresses!), I don’t think I could wear something so short to any wedding!

What do you think? Would you consider wearing a mini dress to your wedding?

Thanks for the shout out! I am thrilled with the choice that I made. So many advantages — you get to buy fabulous shoes AND people can see them, you don’t worry about getting your train dirty, you don’t have a bustle to deal with, you can sit comfortable, dance comfortably…and you get to look super cute!

Mark Ingram’s mother was a short dress bride and he has a great photo of her on her wedding day at his Bridal Atelier.

Don’t pick a short dress because it’s a trend — but if you love it, don’t brush the idea off because it’s not “bridal” or “traditional.” If it’s totally YOU — I say, go for it!

I love the idea of a short dress– I hope more brides feel comfortable going for one because it’s the cutest, most stylish look.

I’m wearing a traditional ballgown for my ceremony, but for my first dance, I’m wearing a mini dress and cutting loose!

In my situation, I wouldn’t. My fiance has been fantisizing about me walking down the isle in a long white dress for many years, and I want to do what I can to fulfill that fantasy. But I think they are SOOO cute and would love to see someone go for it! Especially that Watters Minidress! Wooowwww!!!! Gorgeous!

I am a short dress bride for the exact same reasons as Miss Onion. I cannot wait to find the perfect shoes, and to be able to show off my vintage seamed stockings as well.

There are sooooo many beautiful, flowing long gowns out there, but none of them felt like “the one”, until I came across my lovely little silk Alan Hannah. It suits me and my personality perfectly.

I would have considered using a short dress for my wedding– I love vintage clothes and there are so many adorable 50’s styled dresses– but ultimately I still would’ve gone with long. When I was taking pre-wedding photos, though, I thought of going in a short white dress with gloves, and taking kind of vintage-y photos for fun.

I wouldn’t have gone with a mini-dress either– I don’t have the legs for it!

I’m a short dress bride. I’m wearing a vintage (’50s) dress.

Ooh, I like the top set of photos and the dresses on the far top right and the far bottom right :) I won’t be a short dress bride though…I don’t think it’s me. But like a couple posters said, they would make great reception dresses (unless they’re too expensive).

If not for the first wedding then perhaps for the renewals? I would totally wear one of the above numbers for our 20th year renewal!

I love the look of short dresses, and they’d probably fit me better given that i’m 5′1″, but something about them feels more “cute” and less sexy/beautiful to me.

if i was having an informal beach wedding i would def consider wearing a short dress. or even change into the short dress for the reception. but it would have to be classy and chic. cute!

I think they’re definitely cute dresses, but I wouldn’t have dreamed of wearing one for my wedding. I am such a traditionalist!

Figures, the designers decide now to come up with some tea length dresses! I had searched high and low but to no avail. In the end I bought a full length (with train) Paloma Blanca and I had it cut to tea length!
Best decision ever! I really loved my dress, and everyone else loved it too! It was great to have a look that stood out from all the other former brides in our families.

That’s so funny! Since I saw photos of my grandmother’s tea-length wedding dress when I was little, that’s always been the length that I’ve wanted.
I’ve recently been looking at dresses online & have beeen very disappointed in the selection of shorter length dresses that I’ve been able to find.

Thank you so much for this post! I can’t wait to go & look through al of these beautiful dresses!
