“But It’s For The Wedding!”

November 9th, 2007 @ 5:50 pm by Mrs. Toucan

I wanted to thank everyone who played my little game in my very first post! Before I tell you my lie, first one of the truths! For those of you who guessed #3…

(Wedding Expenses”: I’m guilty (and on more than one occasion) of justifying non-wedding related purchases as “wedding expenses.” Even worse, I think my parents are more guilty of it than I am.)

… you lose! ;) It’s sadly true…

The line between what is really a wedding expense, and what I justify to be a wedding expense is starting to get really blurred. In other words, I totally cheat.

Back in August, I went shopping to buy a dress for a wedding we were attending. I found 2 dresses. One was a strapless black dress with white rose print, and the other a white halter dress. Here is your classic example of me justifying the purchase:

Mr. Toucan: Why are you buying the white dress? You aren’t going to wear it to the wedding!
Me: Of course not! I’m wearing this one [holding up black dress]. I like this one better. [holding up the white dress]. So, I’m getting both. Plus, it’s on SALE!
Mr. Toucan: So when are you going to wear the white one?
Me: [thinking]
Mr. Toucan:[giving me that look... you know the one that says, you don’t need that, and you won’t wear that]
Me: It would be a really cute rehearsal dinner dress!
Mr. Toucan:*sigh* …okay… [Ah ha! VICTORY!]

This, surely, must be common for brides. But, for parents of the bride too?

My parents have talked about expanding our back porch into a larger deck or patio since they bought the house some 8 or 9 years ago, and have never really done anything about it. After our engagement, installing a new patio all of sudden became a necessity.

“But it’s for the wedding!”
” Our house has to look nice for when all the guests come visit.”

So, this summer, my parents installed a new patio. Of course, along with new patio, they had to also buy a monster grill, fire pit and patio table, because you know, “It’s for the wedding.”

The new patio (yes, my parents’ house is pink :) )

So there you have it, the story of the “wedding expenses.”

Does anyone else buy things that they want and pass it off as a “wedding expense?” Or are my parents and I the only ones guilty of cheating?

I had to think about it, but this might qualify. There’s a great shop on the Oregon Coast called The Wood Gallery, and they have a burl wood basket carved out of a single piece, handle and all. I thought it was so cool and I wanted it, but I had to leave it behind. Fast forward two years and I needed a flower girl basket for our wedding. Guess what I got? :D

I did this my whole wedding planning. At the end I had two rehearsal dinner dresses, three bridal shower dresses, some extra pair of shoes, and enless plethora of paper in our wedding colors….You just never know when you might need it….

We’re having our ceremony in my family’s vineyard, so of course new landscaping at my parents’ house was definitely necessary all of the sudden, haha! Then also, my mom decided we could use the lower level of their house as a bridal suite room to get ready, so she has already gotten new furniture and in the spring new carpet will be coming. so, yeah, I’d definitely say my parents are very guilty of it. I haven’t done it yet, but I have many more months to come up with something ;)

I’m a bit of a pack rat, myself. So when I see things that are right up my alley (price range, taste, etc.), I’ll get it.

I always tell Mr. M that if I don’t use it or have a need for it after all is said and done, I can always sell it on eBay or WeddingBee! =D

My FI keeps trying to convince me that we need to add gadgets to our wedding budget. It started with an LCD projector. Of course, we should own one of those… we need it for the slideshow, so we may as well own it. Turns out he wanted to project our regular TV over it. Now, it’s the new mac. apparently his old one just isn’t work so well and he NEEEEEEDS the new one to edit video for the wedding. So of course, it should be in the wedding budget :-)

I’m getting married this February so I went crazy this summer buying “honeymoon clothes.” While I do think you need honeymoon clothes you probably don’t need 18 dresses… :)

If anything, I think I actually try to justify things as non-wedding expenses. Like, in the end, I want to be able to say, “Can you believe I only spent $x? For all this!!” So any time I buy something little for the wedding, I’m like, “yes, I will use this giant red galvanized bucket for all KINDS of things - it’s not JUST for the wedding!”

haha i was the same way. my mom wanted me to have my bridal shower in a restaurant but i wanted to save $$ and have it at home. so even though my sister had hers there too, my mom gets all grumpy suddenly deciding her house is too much in a shambles for company (i think it’s b/c their house is wallpapered and linoleum tiled from the 70s and my DH’s parents’ house is country but extremely tidy). so of course i took advantage and decided to embark upon retiling and painting the foyer - which took forever but looked awesome. so of course right after my mom said, now my kitchen floor looks ugly, so we had to tile that too!!! so the 66 boxes of unused tile (huge sale) is now sitting in their garage, which started out as a wedding expense, but now is awaiting placement in each of my sibling’s and my homes.

I totally bought an adorable white dress “for the rehearsal dinner!” You can wear it on the honeymoon too - keep that in mind! And my parents “for the wedding” redid the backyard (no, we did not have the wedding at our house) and put hardwood flooring in the laundry room, of all places.

I bought the cutest white dress from BCBG, which I would never have splurged on, but it is for the engagement party, so it is totally justified :)
