Eco-Friendly Photography

November 9th, 2007 @ 12:06 pm by Mrs. Lovebird

When my photographers told me all their packages were “Green,” I must admit, I was a little confused. After a little research and emails back and forth, I think I finally figured it out.

Photographers who offer “Green” packages mean they only shoot digital photographs, thereby eliminating the need for film and the harmful chemicals used to develop film. It can also mean that they don’t offer printed proofs. Instead, the photographers would give you high resolution images on a digital medium so you can print, on your own, the images you actually want; thereby eliminating the use of extra paper and chemicals used to print pictures you aren’t too fond of in the first place. At first, I found it a little strange that I won’t be getting any actual prints, but overall, the concept makes sense and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I encourage other brides out there to look into the possibility of going “green” in regards to their photography. Instead of having them print you hundreds of images on paper (some images you might not even want), maybe you can try to negotiate a discount towards getting an album of your favorite images instead. Every little bit helps!

We’re going green, too! Not just in photography, but in a lot of other ways.

Proofs are a bit old skool, IMO. And having everything on disc or online is a much better alternative.

we went green. our photographer handed us 5 cds with thousands of images on them. he also threw in 1 big print, 1 wedding album and 3 parents albums (husbands parents are divorced so 1 for each.)

I guess I’m a “green” photographer too since I haven’t used a film camera in about 5 yrs.
I heard about this last year and honestly I think photographers who label themselves “green” b/c they shoot digital are just trying to exploit the new eco-friendly trend. I mean I guess in the big scheme of things not printing photos on paper is saving some trees so in the end everyone wins but that’s not the reason photographers shoot digital nowdays. Digital photography is “green” by default not because a photographer is necessarily eco-concious.

I have to agree with BaghdadBride…our photographer was compeletly digital and posted our pics online without advertising as eco-friendly. It’s cool to see them online anyway since you can send the link to all your friends and family after the wedding and they can order the prints they want. It’s not completely waste-free though since prints are done at some point.

But yeah, I’d hate to see a photographer charge more for the word “green” even if it’s something they’d do anyway.

bunnybride~ I’m actually going with Vincent since Sol and Matt are busy that day.

BaghdadBride~ I agree with your points. Digital is green by default, but maybe the kicker is not developing prints?

Angel~ I agree, I would hate if they charged more too~ but I don’t think that’s the case. There’s no reason for them to charge more because its cost efficient for them as well. I hope photographers aren’t charging more for this. I would think brides could negotiate discounts by not getting prints in exchange for an album or something.

I completely agree with Angel and BaghdadBride… I am a full-time wedding photographer who is 100% digital and I don’t advertise myself as a “Green Photographer” even though technically I am.

Most digital photographers now days operate this way (all digital, no printed proofs) just because it is more cost efficient. It would cost me a few extra hundred dollars per bride to print out printed 4×6 proofs. I stopped doing that a few years ago.

Call it “Green” if you want to… but really the bottom line is about a whole other different kind of green ($$$). The environment just gets the benefits in the long run.

Which is really cool if “green: yay earth!” and “green: yay money!” end up hand in hand on a purchase. I’m glad at least some green things are easy to do.

Our photograhper is all digital…we looked for that specifically to save money. I have never heard it described as “green” either, but now I know a new way to search, because I am currently looking for a digital photographer for bridal portraits or TTD is the houston area.

I think there are definitely better ways to go green for your wedding. We did an article on this a while back that we still get comments on. Choosing a green location or an eco-conscious registry or caterer seems like a more direct way to show your love for the earth.

There’s more to being a green photographer than jsut being digital.

Turn’s off computer at night - Saves up to 30% of computer electricity.

Uses energy saving CF of halogen bulbs in office and studio.

Has dry celaning done with envoronmentally safe chemcials

Uses a hybrid or other ULEV vehicle

Uses rechargeable batteries

Uses a “green” webhost

Purchases CO2 offset credits.

These are things I incorporate intomy business - feel free to ask me more.

Girls,

I would say that almost any photographer these days is 100% digital, therefore not wasting paper or using chemical to develop prints. However, the term “green” that we use, refers to the fact that you won’t have to pay “plane tickets and hotel room” when booking our company… no waste of money or natural resources… you will be saving aprox $1,000 - $1,500 usd!!

We are local, our prices are based in demand and our quality , we are proud to say that we offer the best photography available in the region.

So, please if you have any questions, email us, we will be happy to reply.

We are green, because we are Local. :)

Hi everybody,
The only photo service that I know to be “GREEN”
is http://www.fortoprints.com. They are claiming to use different technology not a regular photo development process. Hope it will help.

I really am a green photographer. I am trying to make my techniques known. I use frames professionally handcrafted from reclaimed wood, I print on stone tree-free paper and use renewable cotton and recycled paper matting. Love to know what you think. ReflectedInnocence.com

There is a lot more to being green than using a digital camera. It is about an attitude toward the environment and about how you run your business. Its about how you source products, market your business, and what you sell to your clients. How you evaluate each purchase you make is extremely important. Where was it made, what is it made of, what will happen to it when you are done with it are all important questions to ask yourself. If you use vendors/service providers, how green are they? Are you putting money toward a green online hosting and printing service? Do you or your vendors use USPS (greener) or UPS/FedEx (Less Green) to ship products?
