Crippled By The Modern Age

November 12th, 2007 @ 8:26 am by Mrs. Robin

I am serious. I didn’t realize it before now, but I don’t know many of my friends’ addresses. I know their personal e-mail addresses, their work e-mail addresses, and their cell phone numbers. I am their myspace friend, and their facebook friend (but I refuse to join friendster). I read their blogs, watch their videos online, and have long instant message conversations.

I have been to many, if not all, of their houses, but I don’t remember such things - I just plug the address in Google maps and go. Or know that they live four houses to the left of Hot Lips Pizza.

It is amazing in this world of instant, accessible communication, that you can be friends with someone and never know their precise location to mail them something as simple as a letter.

Mr. Robin has been on the phone for two days gathering addresses from friends and family alike! The guest list however, is finally almost done. Hooray!

I had that problem too, though I have a worse story. There is a guy we’ve known for a couple years now that we go out with occasionally. I realized I didn’t even know his last name! I felt horrible!

we sent an email “Save the date” out with our wedding website and then included a line for people to email back their addresses to us..it’s worked fairly well..but some people still haven’t emailed us their addresses :P

Snail mail is such a thing of the past, I had friends not reply on time because they never check their mailbox!

Not only that, but people don’t want to reply by regular mail any more. My friend included stamped return envelopes for all his RSVPs, and it was such a waste of money because he got a lot of phone calls and e-mails anyway. I saved myself hundreds in stamps and paper just doing an e-rsvp.

I think this is quite the norm now. When I had to request for all my friends’ address and now, another friend is getting married and he’s making the request too. I chose to use online rsvp, it saved on stamps and the time of transferring information to our spreadsheet.

It’s not just addresses though. I still remember home phone number of my high school friends, back in the days when cell phones were a luxury, now I don’t even remember my best friend’s number!

Me either Eva! I don’t even know Mr. Robin’s phone number by heart!

This proved really bad once when I locked my keys and cell phone in my car, he is the only one with a spare key and I couldn’t call him. I had to call my mother to ask for my boyfriend’s phone number.

I am currently using this service called Wufoo to collect addresses. It is free for up to 3 forms. http://www.wufoo.com You create a simple form that has the Name, Significant Other/Guest Name, Address and Phone Number fields and then send it out to all those people you only have email addresses for. It’s working pretty well so far. :)

I remember that too! We had to call each family’s major address holders and find out without announcing to everyone that we didn’t know where they lived.

The other thing is birthdays. So, now in my rolodex I have address, phone, email, and yep…birthdays. Now if I can only remember to check them…
