Ring Drama

November 14th, 2007 @ 3:54 pm by Mrs. Bubblegum

Because Mr. Bubblegum and I have known for quite some time that we would eventually get engaged, we had several conversations about the engagement ring. Usually, the conversation would go:

Me: “I want to pick it out.”

Mr. Bubblegum: “No, I want to pick it out.”

Me: “But it will live on my finger forever, so I need to like it.”

Mr. Bubblegum: “Please, just let me have this one tradition.”

Me: “Fine, but I have specifications.”

My specifications were as follows:

a) platinum band
b) rubies on either side of the diamond

Mostly what was bothering me was that I felt he wasn’t really listening to what I wanted.. or maybe that he just didn’t understand how important this was to me. Maybe it’s a part of the Y-chromosome (one of my friend’s husbands thought that you only wear an engagement ring during the engagement and then take it off once you get married). I would just have to work harder to get him to understand. However, time was running out…

And before I knew it, and much earlier than I had expected, Mr. Bubblegum presented me with a ring.

And as it turns out, it is perfection.

And y’know what? Mr. Bubblegum did good.

Don’t you love that? My FI somehow magically figured out what sort of engagement ring I wanted, even when I couldn’t quite describe it myself… (and of course, like you, I was totally convinced that he couldn’t possibly get it)

The rubies are beautiful. Why did you choose them? Is there a history, or just personal preference?

Oooh it’s gorgeous!!! I’m so glad it turned out perfectly for you!! And I too have a soft spot for rubies - my mom’s engagement ring is just one giant ruby!

I had the same discussion with my fiance, established guidelines, and let him pick it out from there…..and I LOVE my ring!! =)

Yay for ovals!!! They are so rare and different these days. My one stipulation was that my stone was oval :)

I think you guys handled it SO GREAT! Its really neat that you gave him “direction” but let him pick it out. It really kept the sense of “tradition” intact, but you still got what you wanted :)

seems I am one of the only ones on the boards who gave NO direction at all, and had no specific conversations about the ring before getting engaged ?
I mean I’m *pretty* sure he knew I wanted Princess cut.. but that’s about it, and it was never discussed as specifically as “when we get engaged I would like princess cut stone in my ring”.

Everything about my proposal was a complete suprise. He did take on of my good friends with him shopping however. I found out about that later.

I don’t know what I want. But that only causes me to want to design it myself so I really like it. What can I say, I am a girl who knows what she wants.

It’s funny actually, because I told FH what I had always wanted for my ring, and he didn’t listen at all, lol. But I’m glad he didn’t, because it’s beautiful and unique, and he picked it out because it had a special meaning that made him think of me. I love it so much, I wouldn’t change a thing.
