Saving The Date - Lego Style

November 14th, 2007 @ 4:39 pm by Mrs. Toucan

When deciding on how to make our Save the Dates, I knew that I wanted to do a magnet of some sort so that friends and relatives would have a handy little reminder of our wedding date on the fridge. I also wanted to do something a little different that represented our personalities a little better. Here’s a hint:

You might have guessed that these are Lego versions of Mr. Toucan and myself (ok, they don’t look that much like us… but you get the idea).

If any of you actually knew Mr. Toucan, you’d know that he’s really like a big kid. Some of his interests include: video games, transformers (we actually made a special trip to the toy store a few weeks ago to buy him a new one), and you guessed it… Legos!

Keeping the Lego theme in mind, I designed this for our Save the Dates:

Each “card” was made out of assorted pieces of colored card stock. I used various combinations of deep blue, maroon, gold, purple and green, so not every card was exactly the same. I did this partially so I wouldn’t go crazy if I didn’t end up with enough of one color, and partially because I already had this card stock lying around and was too cheap to buy more.

For my Lego-magnet messengers, I bought some pieces (mostly the heads and legs) straight from Lego, and others (bodies, hair/hat, poles and flags) from various sellers on BrickLink. I bought a package of 100 super magnets from National Imports, and used crazy glue to attach them to the back of the Lego messengers, as shown here:

Since we bought a few different kinds of each Lego piece, we were able to mix and match the pieces to make different “messengers.” Here’s an example of a few different types of Lego messenger magnets:

In total, I spent about than $1 for each Save the Date. While this is probably a lot more than what people normally spend on their Save the Dates, we had decided that we’d only be handing these out (not mailing) to family members, and very close family friends. In other words, we only needed to make 50-60 total, so the expense seemed to be worth it. :)

First I thought, “Where’s the magnet?”, expecting one of the usual flat ones! Then I realized how insanely cool it would be to have these instead!

PS. I know what it likes to have a man-child for a fiance too! Mine is currently addicted to Super Mario Galaxy :P

I had never heard of this before - very cute! My fiance is jealous of Mr. Toucan… he loved his legos. I, on the other hand, was a duplo little girl and he makes fun of me for that… sigh.

Thanks, everyone! I was really excited about this project, so I’m glad you guys like it! :)

Mamamiya, I bought the tux body torso from BrickLink. It was part of the “Harry Potter” line of Legos specifically the description was “Dark Gray Torso Harry Potter Pinstriped Suit Jacket.” I bought the legs from Lego.
