Mrs. Kiwi's Picture
Mrs. Kiwi, Los Angeles Age and Occupation in 06: 27, Bookkeeper Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, P.E. Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

Takes The Cake (Literally)

I was absolutely thrilled with the Radisson’s treatment of us before and after the wedding. Well, except a few details. The above picture shows the cake table, the amber votives visible to the upper right side. See my cake? It was so tasty- I heard.

Since we were all over that room, we didn’t get a chance to eat, much less have cake. We did get a measly taste when we cut it (see how chocolatey and delicious it looked?), but we were really hoping to get some of it- so that was a disappointment. After the reception, we retired to our suite upstairs, waiting for the bell guy to bring the gifts and candles and things to our room. The box that had the cake cutters was with the items, but it was empty. When Mr. Kiwi mentioned this to the coordinator, she said, “You didn’t bring cake cutters.” Mr. Kiwi held up the box and said, “Um… empty box that held them?” Her response? “Oh. Well, we’ll take a look for them, then.”

Mr. Kiwi has wanted to eat the top of our cake on our one year anniversary - sure it may be nasty, but it held a special meaning to him. Well, when we mentioned it, they didn’t know where it was. It wasn’t until Wednesday night, five days later, that we received a call from the reception coordinator (while we were in Vegas), saying she may have found our cake cutters, and when do we want to get our cake top? I called her back, and left a message. This was a week ago, and I haven’t heard anything back.

So, although our cake is most likely a lost cause (it was refrigerated, not frozen), I still want those cutters back! I wasn’t really that sold on the eating of the top tier, but Mr. Kiwi was, and that’s enough to sadden me.

Are you planning on eating your top tier on your one year anniversary?

We had SO much cake left over. I had enough cake for over 70 people and we ended up having about 45 there so needless to say, not only was the top tier left over, but a huge chunk of the center of the cake as well.

My MIL took it all home (brought a cooler for this purpose) and she wrapped up the top tier for our one year anniversary. The rest she brought to my mom’s office and shared with the other two folks we work with. We plan on trying to eat it — it’s well packed I hope. Frozen and wrapped first in plastic, then in tin foil, then in a tupperware.

Oh Mrs. Kiwi, I’m so saddened for your cake drama. I hope they do find it / have it for you! I’d be bummed too, we really want to save the top for our 1 year anniversary too.

We were planning on eating our top tier for our one year anniversary, but our entire cake got eaten up on our wedding day. Apparently our guests were asking for seconds and thirds.. Our coordinator said that if we ever stay at the hotel again (which is in Hawaii and costs $600 a night), she’ll arrange for a mini cake to be made for us.. Uh, thanks but no thanks.

we had cupcakes at our wedding and the reception venue wrapped up two for us after the reception. we ate them on our anniversary. they were a little dry but really delicious. i don’t remember tasting anything on our wedding day so i was glad we had something later on that i could enjoy.

hope you get your top tier!

We are! Every time I go in the deep freezer for something I’m soooo tempted to eat it NOW!!!

We had some extra that wasn’t the ‘top tier’ that we’ve already devoured - and it was delicious - confession - we didn’t even let it fully thaw before digging in!

I’m only sad Hubby never got a bite of his groom’s cake, which I had specifically ordered in the flavor of cake he loved (and wasn’t a finalist for the big cake). Maybe I’ll order him a mini one from the bakery for his birthday!

Given the small size of the cake slices that were served, I’m pretty sure that not all the cake was sliced or eaten. However, we didn’t get the top tier ir any other leftovers afterwards– we did tell them to cut up all the layers so we could get all the flavors served, but it would’ve been nice to get the leftovers boxed up for the brunch the next day…

At least they found the servers…thank goodness. I’m probably asking the obvious question here, but did the coordinator know you wanted to save the top?

Oh, what you can do is ask your baker to recreate the top for your one year wedding anniversary. Not exactly the same thing, but it might help.

Hi Angel! Yeah, they actually SAT the top tier of the cake on our sweetheart table after the cake cutting, since the topper was still on it, it was all decorated. Then they removed the topper and sent that back, but no cake. :(

my sister had the bakery do a small round cake of the same cake for her 1 yr anniversary- we had it after a dinner party with friends- it was wonderful.

We had centerpiece cakes, so thee was not “top” to save. Anyways, we are getting a small replica cake in a year - maybe you could do the same thing.

We are having everyone sign a bottle of champagne with a silver marker pen and will pop that on our one year anniversary. We are moving after the wedding and don’t want the cake to spoil in the move.

I’m so sorry Mrs. Kiwi! If I were you, I’d keep bugging the coordinator until I got my cutters back. I would want them too! And make them feel REALLY bad that they didn’t save the top tier. I’m sorry it bummed out Mr. Kiwi, which in turned bummed you. =(

Sorry to hear about the cake issues. You could go our route, i’m going to order the same type of cake (just a small version) of our one year anniversary. It isn’t the same cake but honestly, I would rather have a fresh cake than one that’s been sitting in my freezer for a year.

We’ll eat cake and drink a bottle of champagne we saved from our wedding!

We had a destination wedding, so no we didn’t save the top - we ate it during the rest of the week for dessert and it was DELISH! Maybe if we’re feeling sentimental we’ll order from the same bakery next year if we vacation down there again!

So lame about the cake :(
I’ve heard about people having an “anniversary” cake made in their wedding flavors for their first year. That way, the cake is fresh! Since the Radisson made your cake, and not a baker, you can ask a local bakery to create a cake in your flavors… it won’t be exact, but I’m sure it will be tasty! :)

i missed the cake at our wedding too. and then my mom (who was in charge of the top tier) forgot and left it in the hotel room. so no cake for me. i was surprisely sad about it. then my husband tried to make me feel better by telling me it was really nasty tasting (it wasn’t really) so i did not miss out.

We had lots of cake left so we parcelled it out to friends & family. Didn’t save the top though - not too keen on eating one-year old cake. We’ll probably just order a small one from the same bakery.

Not planning to do that, but I DO think we’ll plan on ordering a cake from our baker in the same flavor for our anniversary!

And thats a HUGE bummer about your cake Mrs Kiwi :( I love how you look like youre licking your lips in your pic!

We ae our cake top during the week following the wedding. We’ll get another cake on our anniversary to celebrate. I cannot see me even attempting to choke down a small bite of cake that has been frozen for a year, and I really wanted to enjoy that top layer! It was special for the hubby and me in that it was our fave flavor (mint chocolate chip), and it was mighty tasty!

I think the hotel should pay for a new cake topper to be created so you can pop it in the freezer immediately! How weird for them to be that way about your top layer of cake as well as the cake cutters! I don’t blame you for being upset at all…

We ate our cake top on our 1 month anniversary as we heard that a year later frequently freezer burn makes it practically inedible despite best wrapping efforts. It was too yummy to wait and then throw out after a couple bites! I have been thinking about ordering a mini cake on our 1 year anniversary so that we can have a fresh recreation then too. (What can I say, it was good cake…)
