About Mrs. Hummingbird

Since I’ve been writing this blog for the last few months, all you ladies in the Hive have gotten to know a little bit about me and my crazy ways (my vintage shopping ways, my friendship drama, my freakishly large feet, etc.).

However, as I am not the only one getting married, I thought it might be nice to dedicate a blog post to my one and only Mr. Hummingbird. So, without further ado, a little list about why Mr. Hummingbird is awesome!

1. He is super smart – Even though we’ve been together 3 years, I’m still surprised by all the things he knows about science, history and art. Not only do I find it pretty darn sexy, but it totally helps us kick ass at Trivial Pursuit. smiley3017

2. He is very creative – Not only is he working as an environmental artist for an upcoming video game, but he’s also been drawing his own cartoon for the past two years. Last summer, he even published a book of his early strips. I could not have been more proud.

3. He has a great “sense of wow” – A lot of guys in their twenties seem to think it’s not cool to be happy or excited about things they like, but Mr. Hummingbird still has this great childlike enthusiasm for movies and books and games that totally makes me smile. The first time he brought me over to his place, he showed me his gigantic collection of Star Wars Lego and I was immediately charmed.

4. He is very supportive – Two years ago, I was stuck in an administrative job I absolutely hated. My boss was a jerk and I came home every day crying. Mr. Hummingbird not only told me to quit the job, but encouraged me to hold out and try to find something I actually wanted to do. A month later, I was hired into my current job in publishing.

5. He is incredibly thoughtful – A couple of years ago, a beloved aunt of mine died. I’d spent a lot of my childhood in her place in Verdun, Quebec. Not only was she always ready to play (usually our favourite game – Kerplunk), but after my grandmother died, she was one of the people who really comforted me and helped me through such a rough time. When my parents told me she’d passed away, I was shattered. The next day when I came home from work he was waiting for me to comfort me and to give me a present – my very own Kerplunk set.

6. He encourages me to try new things/is willing to try new things– Before we got together, I barely played video games and I wasn’t a fan of spicy foods and he barely watched TV and wasn’t a fan of foreign films. Now I love Dead or Alive and food with a zip to it (Mexican, Indian, bring it on!) and he’s addicted to series television (Heroes and The Office are must-watches) and loves movies by Chan-wook Park and Guillermo del Toro.

7. He is sweet with my family – My family has a lot of traditions during the holidays. We always have an entire meal of appetizers on Christmas Eve, we watch The Grinch That Stole Christmas and (I) sing the Fahoo Forays song, and Christmas day is not complete without my uncle, my dad and my grandpa quoting Monty Python. I thought it might be weird for him having to jump into all our little customs, but he was completely game, eating miniquiches, snuggling up to me during The Grinch and breaking out his favourite lines from Life Of Brian (“You’re all individuals!” “I’m not!”)

8. He is really good with kids – We’re not planning on doing the whole kid thing for a while yet, but he is “Uncle Hummingbird” to a friend’s little girls and is always completely game for playing with them when we go over, be it building a tower with blocks or having an invisible tea party.

9. He has a secret voice he uses just for puppies – Okay, he reads this blog and will probably be completely embarrassed for me outing him like this, but we live by a giant park and whenever we’re walking through it and run into a cute dog, he drops to his knees (he’s a very tall guy) and starts cooing at them in a voice five times higher than his regular speaking voice. One of his major goals, when we move into a bigger place, is to get his own little grumpy-looking bulldog puppy to follow him around.

10. He is actually involved in the wedding planning – I know some brides like to be a one-woman wedding show, but I’m happy to have some help and completely appreciate Mr. Hummingbird lending a hand. In fact, so much so that we’re working it out so that we both have elements of the wedding that are uniquely ours (I’ll blog about that a little later, but I have to say now, I’m really excited about some of Mr. Hummingbird’s stuff – so cool!).

Anyway, now that you’ve heard a little about my amazing fiancé, tell me a bit about yours. What’s he like and what makes him so awesome?

FH also has a “pet voice” in which he let’s me know exactly what my cat is thinking!

One of my favorite things about FH is that he enjoys teaching me things and enjoys when I teach him things. He’ll tell me medical information, and I’ll teach him about history.

He also loves my cooking/meal-planning. I don’t know why as I’m not going to be making any appearances on Food Network anytime soon, but I definitely appreciate it and it makes me want to cook more! (As a “thank you”, he always cleans up after meals.)

Aw, Mr. H sounds so sweet–and I always fall for the boys with the nerdy hobbies. I gave Mr. Fiance his birthday present early this year, Super Mario Galaxy, and he was SO HAPPY. Then he realized he had nothing to do for the rest of the day but play Wii and I swear that kid didn’t stop smiling until he went to bed. So. Darn. Cute.

He’s just like me in the qualities I like about myself, and the opposite of me in the qualities I dislike (impatience, inability to explain/teach, etc.).

Also, he cooks and does laundry. Sometimes simultaneously. How can you not love that?

Those are utterly adorable! I love when there are silly little things that are so small but mean so much….my guy is great in a lot of ways. The most recent thing in my mind is when I made an impromptu appt at a bridal salon – and all of my gfs and mom were busy and I was going to go alone. He thought that was the most horrible thing to do and volunteered to go – even though he wasn’t allowed to see the dress and hated waiting in a dressing room…and then he volunteered his best man to go with me – because he said I needed someone! Turns out – he called my MOH and she postponed her trip to come with me. All that for a visit that didn’t even produce ‘the dress’. It was surprising and adorable in the same moment!

This was such a sweet post to read! And not enough room to tell all the sweet things about my fiance – all I can say is that he’s the best person I know. :)

I love my husband because he always brought the best out in me, and by this, he was also very honest when it came to some traits that I had that were not very flattering. In time, I became a better and happier person, and he has as well. In addition to that, he’s gotten me to try new cheeses, he’s an awesome cook, and always makes time for me no matter how busy he is.

Some special things about my guy…
He who did not liek cats spoils mine 10x worse than I do. I am the mean one who forbids the cats the counter and he is the one who fills a glass of water everyday so they can drink next to the sink (they have no less tham 2 water bowls.

He is insistent that he is not a dork becaus he plays a bunch of sports (4-5 soft ball leagues at a time is definatly a lot) yet his favorite channels are Dicovery anything, National Geographic and ding ding ding, you guesed it his #1 favorite is the Weather Channel!

He always thinks I do too much, even when I sit on my bum and watch tv. I even get scolded for picking up his dish to put in the sink when I get up for aglass of water.

There are so many more great things about him that I could go on and on. Of course he has his bad points too….

My fiance just makes me happy. We’ve been together about a year and a half and there hasn’t been a time during that period when I had that “what am I doing in this relationship” thought, like I had in the past. He told me about five months before we started dating, when I was actually in therapy to help me get over an old relationship, that no one would treat me better than he would. And he’s right.

I knew he was the one when my parents and sister visited and we weren’t dating. We all went to dinner with a bunch of friends and he told my family what I normally ordered and my sister said he had “soft eyes” towards me. And then he sat with my mom for an entire basketball game – which is a feat because my other boyfriends couldn’t stand my mom. They get along wonderfully.

I’ll stop soon, I promise. But aside from being sweet and caring, he’ll also call me on my crap. When I’m being a be-oitch, he’ll tell me. When I need space, he lets me be. He doesn’t make me feel guilty for wanting to go the gym by myself. He just makes me happy – and it’s incredible.
Thanks for asking! :)

This is cool; I want to play!

1. He’s a drummer. Actually he can pick up about any instrument and learn it, but he is a percussionist at heart.

2. He can teach me almost anything. I’m stubborn, and I don’t like to feel like I’m being talked down to which makes it hard for me to learn anything I can’t figure out outside of a classroom. But he can. My wonderful man.

3. He’s my best friend. Really, I haven’t had one since I was a little kid and even then it wasn’t necklace worthy. This guy is my favorite person in the world.

4. He sings me awake. He knows I get the frights if I’m startled, so he devised a way to sing me awake so he wouldn’t scare me. Sensitivity and a sexy voice…he’s something else.

5. He’s not afraid to be a kid. We have a great time because (like Mr. H’s sense of wow), he’s not afraid to be himself and have fun.

6. He loves me even though I’m odd. I kept asking him during dating “I’m so weird; why are you still here?” How cool is it that I get to be myself. Really myself.

7. He gets me flowers and writes love letters for no reason.

8. He pulls out my chair and opens doors for me….such a romantic, and I love it!

9. He stands up to his family if they’ve done something wrong. With him, it’s us first and the rest of the family second. I didn’t think a guy like that existed.

10. He showed me what tears of joy were.

Yay for the wonderful men in our lives!

oh my god. ben totally does have a “puppy voice”. i mean he is kind of a douchebag, but i’ll have to agree that he is an awesome, awesome friend (did i mention how happy i am for you guys? :D ).

anyway, since alex reads your blog too, i’ll put my top ten reasons why he’s so awesome:

1. we can actually talk movies. even if we disagree on them a lot, it’s nice to have someone intelligent to talk movies with… and we can geek out the cinematography /production design talk!

2. not just talk movies, but make movies as well… we can work professionally and he’s really supportive (not to mention, a great sport) whenever i’ve got a production to work on…. he was a great guinea pig for all my makeup tests during the production of Zombie Jesus!

3. his eyes literally twinkles when he gets an idea for a DIY project. it’s pretty cute. and he’s pretty creative with his DIY projects too (ie. the anatomical heart he made out of model magic to house my engagement ring)

4. he puts up with my delirious self when i’m sick… and keeps insisting i stay in bed and rest and take my buckleys on time. i usually protest and be a bitch, but he deals with it pretty well.

5. he gave having cats in the house a try despite being allergic to them. now we have four cats he’s absolutely crazy about. he buys them toys every time he picks up cat food or takes them to the vet.

6. he’s thoughtful. when i got my lip pierced, he carried straws around in his bag for a month so that i could drink without making a mess.

7. he has no problems speaking his mind and is a human rights activist. he’ll cause a stink if anyone is treated unfairly. finally! someone who can think for himself!

8. he’s the one who insists on mandatory hugs and “i love you’s”… it’s throw-up-in-your-mouth sweet.

9. he’s really close with his family. this is a huge deal for me since i’m really close with mine as well. seeing his family values actually made me rethink the whole “never having kids ever” bit.

10. being with him = ultimate geekiness. apple computers, action figures, books… not to mention OBSCURE SIMPSONS REFERENCES! we’re just full of useless information, it’s perfect.

[...] Kim has a bite to eat while talking to Mr. Hum. I have to give a shout out to these two because not only did Kim take the train a long way to be at my shower but, because the train she was taking didn’t come out to where the party was, Mr. Hum drove down to the train station and picked her up so she could be there. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Mr. Hum is awesome. [...]
